Slashdot have some hilarious coverage of a recent incident in which Ubisoft support staff uploaded a file called "R6Vegas2_fix.zip" to their help site, allowing customers that bought a digital download version of the Rainbow 6: Vegas 2 for PC to work around the fact that they couldn't update to the latest patch (a pretty common problem for digital download versions; the patches for these are often released several days after the normal retail patch comes out).

Unfortunately for Ubi, it turns out this "fix" is just a no-CD crack released by a pirate group (yarr), which has created a little bit of an embarrassing situation.

But even Steam has been a little behind on some of their patches for third party games. Call of Duty 4 for example.

That's not Steams fault, I doubt any Valve game has been late for patches. I wonder why it takes longer to release the patch anyway, surely there isn't that much difference between an online copy and one off a DVD.

There's a little bit of extra work involved in making sure it works with the various DRM systems, testing, etc. What boggles my mind is why they don't just delay the patches so the release for all versions can be in sync.

It's like they're trying to intentionally make digital downloaded versions suck more than the retail versions.

and i have no idea why they'd want to do that, cos downloaded versions mean more profit for the producers, rather than everyone else in between.
