Why does a phone come with 2 wire phone cable and a fax come with a 4 wire cable.

Got new multifunction fax, scan, printer, etc but the 4 wire cable that comes with it is too short but i have a makeshift extended 2 wire cable lying about. My question is what will the 2 wire cable not do???

2 wire cable will work.
