hasweb.com cpanel shared host very cheap, but if you're site takes up more than 10% of the cpu, they'll switch you off

If you're only after cheap hosting, http://www.dreamhost.com/ and http://www.servage.net/ aren't too bad

www.jumba.com.au is the best and cheapest from when I last looked into it. Been with them a year, no complaints here. They currently have a special on for new customers - pay for 6months up front and get another 6months free.

Depends on the budget and needs.
fast mysql? fast uploads/downloads? dedicated/virtual servers? ssl/ecommerce? $20 a month should get you a good fast virtual server with all the frilly bits. |

late reply..had no bandwidth..
I'm not after anything that is top end like ecommerce or full on code driven. My site is going to be for my photography, so i can upload photos onto a nice layout and look more professional than what i have now. Fast loading would be the only pre-requisite i reckon.. Will be downloading a layout for my site, most likely flash orientated. Do i go unix or windows hosting? is there a difference? Have just come across something called "dynamic swish site" how does this differe from a "dynamic flash site" ? Is US based server faster or aussie faster? last edited by Damo at 08:46:23 19/Jul/08 |

well depends who your visitors are. If they are aussies, aussie is faster, if they are from the US, the US is faster.
Another Vote for Jumba. They also have an AU and US cluster so you site is fast both sides of the world |

I'm on Jumba as well, no complaints. Well aside from the fact they bill me every month...

Have just come across something called "dynamic swish site" how does this differe from a "dynamic flash site" ? Swish is a program for making flash animations... don't make an entirely flash site - urgh... paging trog! I'm with hasweb, I pay about $60usd/year for 5GB storage and 75GB bandwidth, or something like that. They're good, but they're not exactly the best on customer service, they do have some downtime (very rarely, mind you) and they're reasonably fast... but not lightning quick or anything. |

For photography?
A nice clean HTML layout that doesn't detract (or distract) from the purpose of the site - which is to display your photos. Depending on skillset maybe a little AJAX and DHTML to render thumbnails and content asynchronously, otherwise the straight HTML would be fine. "Web 2.0" or whatever you want to call it is all about elegance and simplicity in design. Edit: From your requirements post: Fast loading would be the only pre-requisite i reckon.. Flash is not for you! last edited by Hogfather at 14:19:27 19/Jul/08 |

piss flash off, it's too much effort not to mention difficult to code/use...
Get something like Drupal and add a few cool modules\link to gallery 2 and bobs yer uncle, awesome accessable website SEO friendly and secure. www.drupal.org |

drupal is awesome; I would also recommend wordpress if you want a simple blog-style site - it's really good

dreamhost are s*** if it's for a site you want online all the time...
I use www.made2own.com for heardy.com and deamhost for heardy.net which is just a file dump/hosting site (of movies taken on holidays) very happy with made2own, used them for years, think I got onto them from either SA, OT or Genmay... either way still using them |

thanks for help everyone, looks like i've decided on jumba..
I almost went dreamhost..but seeing what they offer, it seems just too damn big and gives me the feeling that they could have far more problems than jumba.. Now for a layout.. |
