Just bought a new 64bit tablet laptop, come with 32bit vista installed. Is it worth formatting and putting 64bit vista on? (only 2gb ram) Will 64bit apps run as 64bit or should I download the 32bit ones?

You need a 64bit OS to run 64bit apps.

I don't think you should bother. I run 64bit Vista, but almost no programs are available in anything other than 32bit. There's not enough benefit to be had for the time being to bother.

Don't do it if you don't plan on making use of that extra address space. When running stuff in 64-bit (Long) mode, your pointers end up taking slightly more RAM, so you might end up with a maybe 5% net loss.

And then you have all the annoying driver issues to worry about with x64.

I heard a rumour that all Vista drivers must come with a 64-bit version for MS to certify them.

No, no and no.

Yeah, they do. But pretty much all drivers are signed anyway. Even some obscure EXT2/3 drivers I got worked no worries.

I've been running vista 64 for at least six months now. I've rarely had a compatibilty problem, and they've all been overcomeable.

64bit is so old hat

I need a 128 bit processor and OS for my 274,877,906,944 yottabytes of memory.

Seriously tho if IPv6 takes off, then 128bit processors may be useful.

Running x64 Vista here - some older games had a few quirks, but seem to be fixable. Then there are some apps (like MacDrive) that simply refuse to install/run.

The comment about signed drivers is correct. I ran into that issue with VMWare Server. You have to press F8 upon booting and tell Vista to run with unsigned drivers, each time you boot and want to use those particular drivers.

ive had zero issues with 64bit os

even was able to find drivers for all my old old hardware (logitech wingpad)

had a few issues finding a decent iso mounting proggy (since daemon tools went gay) but got there in the end (magic iso)

If you go to the umart software page xp pro 64 is actually more expensive than vista ultimate 64. Whats the reasoning for this?? :/

$249 compared to $255

Trying to get people to buy Vista, I guess.

Is that an OEM price? I thought Ultimate Retail was like $700.

I have been running vista 64 for a long time and I was kind of expecting some problems, but my machine has been running perfectly. No problems with drivers. The hardware I'm running is fairly new.

Yeah that's OEM, which is identical to retail but without the manuals n s*** right?? Plus you can only get OEM with a PC purchase.
