Some of you may not be aware, but BioWare's most recent development has not taken place in space, the Star Wars universe or an ancient fantasy realm. In fact, it isn't even coming to home console or PC. Sonic Chronicles starring everyone's favourite blue hedgehog, an RPG for the Nintendo DS, is being handled by one of the most respected mature RPG developers in the field. Yep, that's right. Gamesutra have a really neat interview up with the game's lead Mark Darrah, so if you're interested to know what prompted this move, you can check it out, but the one thing that clearly comes from the move to make this game and Darrah's comments is that BioWare aren't stopping strictly at Xbox 360 and DS beyond the PC platform. "Yeah, we're looking into Wii and PSP as a company, as well, but nothing's been decided, and nothing's been announced. And we are, from styles of games, we are trying to broaden our portfolio. But we still have Dragon Age, which is a more traditional style of BioWare game."How all this fits into their apparently tumultuous production schedule and partnership with EA isn't clear (no one really knows what's up with Mass Effect 2 or how to deal with rumours they're working on a third KOTOR), but it's awesome to see a developer of this calibre moving beyond their roots and into new realms. |
