I just happened to turn on the wireless on my laptop, and I've noticed there are two (fairly strong) networks called "Internet-Hotspot 7" and "Internet-Hotspot 4". They're unsecured, so I'm wondering if anyone knows what the deal is with them?

I can't connect... and I'm not exactly sure why.

I think they might be the telstra ones, where you connect and give cc/bigpond account details and you can payg net.

There used to be free wireless in the mall, not sure if this is the same thing.

The Telstra APs usually have Telstra CBD or Telstra as their SSID.

Just on this topic, I was staying in a hotel in Melbourne a couple of months ago and searched for APs and picked up several. I then logged into a few with no security and ran WireShark just to see what they were doing.

Low and behold, most were surfing for porn but a few were just doing email stuff. If you ever find a public AP make sure you tunnel somewhere you trust first or run everything through SSL/SSH tunnels.
