korbs didn't want that distributed IIRC; haven't heard from him for a while but please don't link to it just to respect (what I recall being) his request!

i think trog is confused because this thread

http://qgl.ausforums.com/index.php/439207/?agn=thread&id=2412411

doesn't imply anything about what trog is suggesting, someone post it already i wanna re-read it ta

good story that one.

i think i lost that profile (johnny v), but to think that it is easily over two years ago since i was talking about enlisting, to having that time under my belt already.

f*** time goes fast.

yeah - just as I enlisted, the course at Kapooka changed - from being seven weeks, to thirteen weeks; but split into two separate parts. the first seven being the Basic Recruit Training, followed by a six week course named 'Advanced Soldier Training'.

The initial seven week course covers the exact same format as Korbs explains - where the Advanced Soldier part furthers the skills that you learn, and trains us in the Army's night vision gear, advanced weapon systems, navigation, parade drill, exercise warfare and the like.

Each soldier then heads off to their respective corp placement - and undertakes their initial employment training (the training that their specific job requires). I.e. Infantry will learn more weaponry and operational skills, Engineers (like myself) learn explosives, mine-warfare and watermanship etc.

The point of Kapooka is to give each soldier the same skills and tactics so when in an Operational tempo we can hit the ground running - and are all on the same page.

Humourously, when I went through Kapooka 15+ years ago it was a 13week course

good read.

how does the training work, anyone?

i mean what do people do for money during these 7 weeks or do you just do this at some point in your life when you dont have a job and dont have bills?
serious question ^

and once the trainings over, are you just on call for them if they need you at any point for the rest of your life?

Serious?

You get paid to train, at the end of basic training I think you have roughly $3000 sitting there?

Then you go do your employment training in your choosen army career.

Then you work... according to mates some jobs are more demanding then others... but it's still a full-time job... 4 years (some jobs are 5 or 6 years like pilots etc) and then you can leave or (I guess?) sign back up.

i joined in 1982 as a reg for the orignal 13 weeker at Kapooka and then Infantry corp training for another 13 weeks at Singleton and did my time at 2/4 RAR in Townsville.
haven't read the "Korb" story but boy i could tell you a few.
back then bastardisation was in....and i mean in a big way and political correctness wasn't even a word!!
i still have mates in, one is a WO and has done some stints back at both as a trainer. he tells me they are flat out swearing at recruits these days without worrying about "offending" someone.

What? Even minimum wage fast food working 14 year old kids get paid for training. I'm sure you've done some sort of training and gotten paid for it.

well yeah, I guess I just wasnt really thinking of it as a 'job' in the traditional sense
what differentiates the guys who went on to go do more training vs. korbs who just went home?

you don't just go home.

you go to basic to either join the regular army or join the reserves.

it isn't just a 7week boot camp for anyone to go to and get paid for finishing.
