There are several:

1 Many older men, who have bladder or prostate gland problems, also develop difficulties with their foreskins due to their surgeon's handling, cleaning, and using instruments. Some of these patients will need circumcising. Afterwards it is often astonishing to find some who have never ever seen their glans (knob) exposed before!

2 Some older men develop cancer of the penis - about 1 in 1000 - fairly rare, but tragic if you or your son are in that small statistic. Infant circumcision gives almost 100% protection, and young adult circumcision also gives a large degree of protection.

A BBC television programme in November 2000 showed two Ugandan tribes across the valley from one another. One practised circumcision and had very little AIDS, whereas, it was common in the other tribe, who then also started circumcising. This programme showed how the infection thrived in the lining of the foreskin, making it much easier to pass on.

5 As with HIV, so some protection exists against other sexually transmitted infections. Accordingly, if a condom splits or comes off, there is some protection for the couple. However, the only safe sex is to stick to one partner or abstain.

For some reason all my sexual partners have all be uncircumsised, so on that front - I cant really comment. I do have a lot of friends however that have always said that chopped is much better.

As for the hygien factor, my brother had a problem when he was about 6-7yo and had to have it done anyway. Much more painful and traumatizing for a boy that age.

The issue of reducing aids applies to developing countries where they don't have the education and resources that we do.

Had a circumcision lecture 2 weeks ago from a paediatric surgeon. He attempted to present non-bias information on to cut or not to cut. Basically, his conclusions were as follows:

- The circumcision debate all comes down to personal choice

- There is alot of pro/anti-circumcision propaganda on the web

- Although there are many documented benefits to circumcision (less UTI's, no penile carcinoma, no paraphymosis etc.) these benefits are so small (forget actual figures but they are like a 1 in 100 000 less chance or something) that there is no basis to recommend circumcision.

- There is really only one medical condition that is an indication for circumcision --> Balanitis xerotica obliterans (BXO), which he said effects 0.8-1.5% of males.

- Complications can occur from the procedure (some ppl still go to GP's to get it done), these risks can be reduced but not eliminated if a trained expert does the procedure (plastic surgeon, paed surgeon).

- The Royal Australian College of Physicians does not endorse routine neonatal circumcision.

Basically, he said he still does alot of circumcisions and has no problem doing it, as long as parents understand the minimal risks and minimal benefits and aren't doing it for the wrong reasons.

It's irrelevant. I think you'll find the vast majority of the time it's done because the father is cut and wants his son to be as well. That being said sex is fine either way regardless so it's a big hoo haa over nothing.

I was under a general, and didnt really have any pain. I do remember waking up in recovery and a nurse coming to check out how the operation went. She had a look down there and said "the operation went well, and the swelling should decrease over the next few days". I was still prettty doped up at this point and came back with "aint no swelling down there".

I had to abstain from all sexual activity for 3 months, and when the doc gave me the all clear, i can tell you that was the best. I recommend trying it :-p
