What I love hearing now, as petrol prices rise above $1.55/L, is how our beloved leaders are building more roads

Well atleast you won't be wasting your petrol dosh sitting idling in traffic ...

I particularly like how infi avoided captial letters and general abused the english language but made sure Courier Mail got both its captials.

i have never been able to understand the whole anti-road bandwagon. roads are the artieries of our society and economy. if we let roads stagnate and did not facilitate greater capacities of traffic how would we get our expanding base of exports e.g. raw materials out of the country (so we can buy it back as manufactured goods for 100 times the price), or how would our own domestic commerce survive (delivering flowers and ebay items and ezy dvd and whatnot).

roads, good roads, are not optional, they are mandatory for any responsible government.

to those who say fossil fuels will expire, well that doesn't mean cars will. alternative fuels are being developed everyday and i think long into the future roads and motor vehicles will remain the primary form of transportation.

public transport is nice and all, but it just cannot replace roads for general commerce and industry out there (like yeah we'll bring you your concrete delivery on the citytrain).

so i say build better roads and more of them!

"Courier Mail" is a proper noun, Obes. Attention to detail please!

So? Roads are the arteries BECAUSE we've always had access to cheap oil. While oil was cheap, it made sense to have roads and use them.

Now oil is not cheap. Petrol is MORE than 2x as much as it used to be. So building more roads, especially for public transport, sure seems like a dumb idea to me, unless we can figure out a way to stop oil getting more expensive than it currently is. Which doesn't seem likely.

We're not as badly off as the US is (and will be), but building more roads now is dumb. We should be following Europe's footsteps and future-proofing with rail for public transport.

how will you use roads when petrol is $102390392013920 a litre~!#!

The point isn't to use rail to replace everything; obviously that'd be impossible - its to use it to move the bulk of people transferring off roads and onto mass transit. Sure, it might not be as awesome as driving to work every day but that's a luxury you're going to have to give up eventually if petrol keeps going up, right? Unless you're either prepared to make sacrifices elsewhere, or inflate the whole economy in a death-spiral just so people can selfishly continue to drive to work!

Yep, they'd be great too. I just think rail is awesome cuz its so fast and good at moving large numbers of people around.

why not keep roads the same and let the economics of petrol prices weed out who can afford to drive to work and who cannot.

industry needs roads and they simply pass their costs onto consumers so they aren't paying for the petrol rises really.

i have no problems with better public transport - but not to the detriment of roads.

I find it hard to agree with that - roads even make it easier to walk, let alone use practically every other form of surface-bound transport humans on earth have ever used. they were around long before oil-powered transport and I don't think there's any reason to consider them mutually exclusive to it.

because at the moment, the support in the public transport system (at least in Brisbane, and IMHO of course) isn't really capable of supporting a mass exodus of new people to it. The various people that I know that catch public tranpsort from the west side to the city in peak hour invariably complain about overcrowded buses already (not sure if rail is better or worse).

I like good roads as much as the next person, but I'd rather see all the billions of dollars that are getting dropped in Bris spent on improvements to the mass transit system instead of new roads.

Until the terrorists get a copy of the plans to the system and blow it all to f***.. Yeah then how many people will get moved around??? (Lots.. they'll be blown up...)

Whats next?? Bombproof railways?? With machine guns?? When will this madness stop?

trog they are spending billions of dollars improving the rail network, almost every weekend at least part of one line is closed for major upgrades. Ever been on the GC/Airport line? Seen the fancy new trains they're also buying?

I'm not sure how things are in Brisvegas, but here in Melbourne our roads are in a kinda grid network. What irritates me is having all these busses that go from X to Y diagonally across all these locations, but quite often you can't get from A to B the way you want.

What they'd be way better off doing is have far more (and more freuqent) busses that just go north-south and east-west along these roads, which would take you prety much one block (10 mins walk) from anywhere you want to go with only using two busses.

Unfortunately that'll never happen because, well... that'd just make sense. So instead every single person ends up making their own private car trip, burning fuel and congesting roads.

mass exodus of new people to it
from the greek exodos, literally "road out": mass departure. you can't have an exodus to something, and a mass exodus is redundant, like ATM machine. sorry, pet hate and common misusage.

I reckon they don't want to fix the Ipswich motorway problem. If they do that would mean that Ipswich type people would be able to get here easier. And who wants that? It's like the bridge to Redcliffe, it is designed to keep them in Redcliffe.

Hahahahaha, that's awesome. It will be interesting to see how much she can put her ego aside and help Obama now that he's won. My hope is she will because he'll probably need her supporters, but I doubt she will.
