Long story short: in the past few years my lower back/spine got occasionally sore when I was inactive for a while, I'd also have a quick zap of stinging shoot down my leg every once in a while. I figured it was because I was too much of a nerd, always sitting in front of a computer. I found a couple of years ago that going to the gym, doing weights and cardio helped out heaps and it pretty much stopped happening completely.

Last week (as I mentioned in another thread), I increased my weights a bit too hastily (after a long break from weights) and ended up screwing things up. Now the pain is there almost all the time, with more frequent shooting pain. The doctor told me to see a physio and get an x-ray in 2 weeks if it persists. Something about sciatica (slipped disc?).

So regarding a physio, anyone had experience with good ones in brisbane?

I was checking out Optima Sports Medicine. Their individual staff profiles are pretty impressive, with most having a s***load of experience with helping sporting teams, etc. Bit of a price tag though ($80-90-ish per session), though I'm sure MBF will offset much of that.

There's also the UQ clinic, which seemed more appealing as it's at my uni and I'd expect to be much cheaper. Unfortunately they don't seem to have as much listed experience as the other group.

Any other advice?

What area are you in bud?

I used to go to Majestic Health Massage at 530 Milton road Toowong. They are about the best I've every been to. They look after the QLD cricket team, a bunch of the Bronco's, State of Origion ect. The girl I was seeing there used to get flown to Sydney by Russel Crowe to look after him.

They put you through the ringer but they know what they are doing and the results are real.

I live in Carindale at the moment. I don't mind driving a bit if it's worth the trip.

Um, I've never calculated it. 60kg @ 172-175cm-ish .. what's that about 20?

Nice way of asking if you're a fat c***, which you're not. Allsports would be suitable

I just looked at their website, they talk pretty much exclusively about massages. I'm assuming they really do more?

Firstly, sciatica is essentially a pinched sciatic nerve (runs down the outside back of your leg). If you've pinched it, you'll know. I did it a few years back and even now after all the stupid f***ing injuries I've done to myself, having a physio release it is the most painful thing I've ever encountered.

If you've pinched a disc in your back, you'll know it as well, as standing up straight/bending/sitting etc will be very difficult.

Either way, if you've done one of these, exercising most definitely WON'T make it feel better (trust me, I'm speaking from experience).

i rekn see a spinal specialist & get a catscan... years back i had a pain in the lower back & went n saw a physio... they pushed & prodded & generally made it worse. later when i got a catscan it was revealed that the disk between the first few vertabrae in my lower back was ruptured & the escaping fluid was bruising the spinal cord causing back pain, shooting stabs down my legs & numbness.

i had to have an operation for the disk to be removed & the cartilidge built up between the 2 vertabrae :(

ET fails to mention that half of his session isn't covered by health insurance cause happy endings aren't considered medicinal.

I had the same thing for a while a few months back - stretching and better nutrition (more magnesium/potassium) seems to have stopped. Prior to that I was doing SFA stretching, which was causing a heap of other problems too.

I'm pretty sure every physio I've been to in Brisbane "treats" the Broncos.

Treats them to a supportive cheer from their lounge room on gameday perhaps.

Ive been going here: http://qsmc.net.au

For rehab on my knee fracture. Its literally under the gabba which makes it easy to find and you can watch football on TV while they try and hurt you.

edit: and the major thing about them that makes them good - they know a s***load about sports injuries and probably know more than most physios about how your weights will work with your injury...

I recently had a problem with my sciatic nerve. Left leg's hip and leg muscles were way tighter than normal despite doing lots of stretching at Karate every week and I had to take a week off cause I couldn't sit down without it slowly gettnig painful, cold/hot shots down my leg and numbness. Its mostly gone now but I have to do a bunch of different stretches as per physio to free up the muscles including the piriformis which can be one culprit.

Good thing was that my CT scan of my lumbar returned no problems :D

I'm currently going to optima for treatment, was recommended by a friend on the basis they are really experienced with the injuries that gymnists generally get (if that helps).

From my experience, they're pretty good.
