Topic: Call of Duty 5 Details Released

It was inevitable Activision wouldn't sit on the Call of Duty franchise, especially after the huge success that was, and remains to be, Call of Duty 4. Recently reports of Call of Duty 5 being in the works and going back to the series' WWII roots began to surface with further speculation Infinity Ward would not be involved in the project.

These reports and speculation have all but been officially confirmed by Activision themselves. The series is indeed heading back to WWII, this time focusing more on the Pacific end of the campaign. Call of Duty 5: World at War will be developed by Treyarch, who were responsible for COD3, and will utilise the same engine used for COD4 with a host of new features and gameplay innovations.

According to reports, players will have the ability to burn buildings and set grass on fire in this iteration, while a new Flamethrower weapon will also be introduced. For the most part, you'll play as the US fighting the Japanese, however, it has also been revealed you'll play campaigns as the Russians invading Germany. Another new feature for the single-player mode will see you having the ability to finally command your troops in the field, while multiplayer will borrow heavily from the COD4 blue-print with Perks derived from WWII-centric abilities and uses.

The reports go on to say the lead build of the game is the Xbox 360 platform, however, it is being developed for PS3 and PC as well. Rumour also has it Infinity Ward are now working on COD6 which will continue its focus on Modern Warfare (though this is just a rumour for the time-being).

We contacted Actvision Australia for anything absolutely official, but were unable to get any comment from them. As soon as we see anything in the way of screens, press releases or videos though, you'll be the first to know.

Oh awesome. A WW2 game! I wonder if they'll slip the D-Day beach landing in again just for good measure, then whisk you off to the Pacific?

Actually if they wanted to be different, adding a mission involving a certain Enola Gay could be just the ticket they need to set this one aside from the rest. Sure that's really in bad taste, but it's probably one of the few things that hasn't been done in a WW2 shooter yet. That or making a POW camp simulator?

Oh awesome. A fantasy game! I wonder if they'll slip the Laser Rifle beach landing again just for good measure, then whisk you off to the Rocket Launcher?

And do what...sit in a trench and watch yourself get trench foot...then run out at the enemy trench spend weeks of action in game to progress 15 meters...

How about making an Iraq war game?

OBJECTIVE: Find weapons of mass destruction.

The thing is, the map doesn't actually have WMDs and there are infinitely respawning enemies.

Pfft, WWII. What everyone really wants is a game where you can use chaingun with tactical nuclear warhead tipped bullets. Fire a few hundred rounds of those puppies and your sure to get a few frags.

No, the objective is "Find a cheap plentiful supply of oil."

Does anyone remember the SuperWeapons7 mod for the original Doom?

Imagine shooting the BFG twice as fast as the chaingun. Was fun in multiplayer :)

I think its good news all round. Past Pacific theater games have been poor So here's hoping they do a good job on it. A CoD Vietnam would be good too.

Yeh a good Pac theatre would be interesting. Also: "however, it has also been revealed you'll play campaigns as the Russians invading Germany" - I suspect this won't be as historically accurate; there's only so much raping and pillaging you can put in a video game (probably zero)

Meanwhile, back in another game studio:

Designer: Guys guys, I just had this great idea for a game that I reckon will go down really well... wait for it... we're going to do a game based on World War Two.
Board member #1: ... Release the lions.
Board member #2 through 7: Nono, I think he's onto something, that could really sell.

Sigh.

Somebody bring back traditional FASA please. No, not the Microsoft bulls*** butchered version of the team, actual FASA. Or Dynamix.

hmmmm WWII ain't that bad ... I am looking forward to it ...

Maybe they should look at us Aussies for inspiration and do Kakoda Trail... Now I don't think thats been done and it has all the right ingredients for a good game

They are making games that people want to play, and which actually sell.

They are making games that people want to play anyway, and which actually sell anyway.

You make it sound like people willingly buy crap products instead of comparing and reading reviews.

That's why I skipped ET:QW for example even though I was hyped to buy it.

Why dont they make an fps about the middle east peace process. You could be like Hans Blix, the other jew diplomat guy or even Madeline Albright! Then negotiate end of hostilities of the war through peace! A bloodless campaign of intrigue.

Oh come on, can you imagine the PC crowd's reaction if you put out a game where the factions consisted of Israel, USA, US-occupied-Iraq, Turkey etc vs Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Iran... yeh I think not :/

They should look towards the future wars where everyone has 3 heads, is wearing HAZMAT suits, the earth is radioactive and we shoot lazers from our eyeballs. f*** yeah what an awesome game that would be.
Bah

Wouldnt the lasers from the eyeballs pierce your own hazmat suit? You havent thought this through too clearly have you?

Considering how solid CoD, CoD 2 and CoD 4 was, and how forgettable CoD 3 was, I find it pretty tough to get excited about this one. Infinity Ward just seem to have something that Treyarch don't.
