Ok, I've managed to rupture my ACL playing sports at an indoor sports place. When I approached them to ask about insurance to cover my costs, they informed me that they have no insurance, and that I'll have to suck it up.

Quite a few ppl I've told this to have said they thought it was mandatory for these places to have insurance to cover such occurances.

Does anyone know the rules around this?

Thanks all!

They would have to have form of public liability but I don't know how this falls under that. Was it their dodgy equipment that caused your injury or just something that happened?

Public liability only covers passive bystanders and not participants. You would need to have an insurance policy yourself.

For example, I am a member of Queensland Volleyball Association. This membership involves a basic form of insurance for injuries incurred in the course of its endorsed events.

Best bet is to have private health insurance + income protection insurance because I can guarantee you that whatever insurance they do offer you, it will be inadequate.

And to be honest, they are not in business to protect players from injury. That has nothing to do with it. Players should manage their own affairs.

Anterior cruciate ligament - IE f***ed his knee, very common (Indoor) soccer injury.

Which club ? I play at Kedron and I've had knee problems of late too so I should check out my cover I guess before I do anything serious :|

Edit: Do you have private health insurance?

I busted my ACL playing for uni law a couple of years ago and the standard insurance policy was so s*** i didnt even bother accessing it. Generally these policies are s***e and anyone playing sport should get their own individual policy.

+1 for infi (for once)

I joined Bicycle Australia just incase I run into someone or something on my bike (covers me for injury and incase they sue).

I even made a point of telling my health insurrance mob (MBF) that I was competing in full contact sports. (So they couldn't then say I wasn't covered for sports injuries if one happened).

Yeh, I'm not sure why you think you should be entitled for them paying for your injury, unless they did something negligent and were at fault for your injury somehow?

What infi said, Also the centres I play futsal at require you when joining to sign a waiver that they are not responsible for injuries suffered (excluding their negligence).

I'm going to start training to become a cage fighter, and will sue if I hurt myself.

I hope you hurt yourself, and I hope a camera is recording when it happens.

And I hope it is grotesque.

No I want to be one of those passive bystanders referred to in my OP. I can record it on my n95 - see iPhone thread.

maybe we can dual scuzzy, i've been training for a while to become a cage fighter

seriously though, how is it their responsibility at all because you got injured?

you probably signed something at the start of the season saying it's not their responsibility if you hurt yourself anyway

I used to help administrate one of UQ's Sporting Clubs.. the amount of paperwork and bulls*** that we had to churn through whenever anyone claimed that they injured themselves at training was insane.

We were required to have $25mil public liability insurance plus a lot of other stuff (I didn't have too much to do with the insurance side of things), but essentially, unless *WE* (being the club as an entity) did something that caused your injury (such as told you to train in an unsafe location, then your own wellbeing is your own responsibility.

We actually had someone die during training once.. Just a horrible, freak accident (she was training with her boyfriend) and then dropped dead (her aorta had torn). We were investigated and it was confirmed that (as tragic as it was) there was no liability for the club etc, and that it was the individual's responsibility to look after their own wellbeing.

Myself and girlfriend play alot of indoor sports - over 5 in house games and 2 superleauge games on weekends each per week. Last year she did her ACL while playing and was in no way covered by the center. We didnt expect them to either btw.

She was 23 :(

Was all happy one minute, then started to feel weird.. collapsed shortly after and died. She was sparring with her boyfriend at the time, and she essentially died in his arms.. Poor bastard :(

That sucks. My physio was doing a class a couple weeks ago and some girl next to her just dropped to the floor; my physio had to do CPR to get her breathing again. Ambos took her away but the theory was she'd had a brain hemorrhage or something :|

Thanks for the feedback.

I didn't expect the place (Toombul Indoor Sports) to cover it. Was just that everyone I'd mentioned it to thought they should, so I thought I'd throw it out here.

Ne1 got any recommendations for knee specialists?

And because of them we have huge public liability insurance costs and no more QGLs.

I seriously recommend staying away from physical activity. Just causes pain to body and wallet.

She was backup and running at around i rekon 80% in 6 months - playing competitive netball within 8-9 months. She was at physio once or twice a week for the first 3-4months then back to once a fortnight for the rest. She was also at the gym 3 to 5 afternoons a week.

She feels pretty much back to 100% after nearly 12months but does get a bit of soreness after weekend carnivals. Being young helped her recovery a lot i think.

I did mine @ Kedron Indoor Soccer as well years ago... I never even thought about hitting them up for insurance at the time! f***! But I doubt they would have covered me anyway. Now I need a recon...

I would instead suggest getting an MRI scan for some possible retardation.
