So I joined the next-gen console ranks. I've seen a few things about streaming video to the Xbox 360; tversity seems to come up a bit. Is that the best way to go?

I streamed a few things from media center.
I think Keato just transcodes. |

I don't want to transcode; I have a lunix box with a samba share with my content on it so if I can keep using that, that'd be optimal

you should be able to share most of it if you use media center extender and add it all to your library in wmp11

Trog I use Winamp with the Orb plugin to stream to the 360. Works great no f***ing about just give Orb a directory.
One issue I have is sometimes it can take up to a minute to buffer the movie(wireless), but once started no glitches at all. |

I have a thecus NAS which is linux based that runs this - http://ushare.geexbox.org/
You should be able to run it too given that you've got a linux box. Works perfectly. |

cool thanks guys, I'll have a play w/ those options and see what's what
what games you like? All I have so far is GTA4; while it's neat I'll confess I'm not completely blown away - but I'm pretty desensitized to games these days :( At the risk of sounding like a typical PC loser, all I can think of when I play it is how much better it'd look and run on my PC. Now you need an HD display to play it on trog.heh I bought one of them too, don't tell Erik |

Is there a way to stream Xvids to my 360 via wireless without the use of WMP11 or anything?

Is there a way to stream Xvids to my 360 via wireless without the use of WMP11 or anything? "or anything" makes it kind hard to stream, as you will need something. All I have so far is GTA4; while it's neat I'll confess I'm not completely blown away Yeah xbox is a bit like that it lacks games that are console games. imo It tries far too hard to be a computer. Earth Defence force was fun for button mashing co-op goodness, Mass Effect is decent (for an rpg). And Guitar Hero! Oh The lego games. I have a wii and a 360 and despite the lame graphics, the wii prolly gets more of a run. |

Yeah, I don't mind so much though because I find myself more willing to stretch out on my lounge and play games these days than sit in front of my PC and play games.
Though, I would seriously love a next-gen version of something like Kung-Fu Chaos, 360 is totally lacking in games like that. |

Tversity is all you need, it works a treat. I use it for both my 360 and PS3. It's better to use than WMP11, because there are certain video files that WMP11 flat out refuses to list on the server. That shouldn't affect you unless you stream HD stuff, but still, something to keep in mind.

If can force it to not transcode if you want at the folder or file. If you've got some unsupported files, just publish/share that folder and force it to transcode. |

I find that tversity always needs to have sharing restarted before it will show folders on the xbox360. Anyone else have this issue? It would be nice to have it work just by starting it up and not have to dick around.

Yeah, I sometimes have to restart the TVersity media server. It's not a problem with the 360, it's TVersity itself, because if I can't see it on the 360, it doesn't show up on the PS3 either. It's been far less of an issue since I upgraded to the latest version though. I really just restart it now out of habit.

stinky, do you use libdlna in your uShare install? Trying to compile it now but it's being a bit of a cock about finding the ffmpeg libraries (recompiling ffmpeg AGAIN now with a --prefix to see if that helps it out).
From what I can see it might not even work on the x360 (the libldna page says its only tested on PS3) so just wondering if I should bother with it or not. |

man, after about 120391039102 hours of manually resolving dependencies and editing configuration scripts I finally got uShare to compile.
The Xbox 360 can see my uShare share, but I can't actually connect to it for some reason - just tries and then doesn't connect - then it seems to lose the share. I think it might be related to the multicasting stuff but not sure. |

It would be nice to have it work just by starting it up and not have to dick around.I find I have some issues with Vista and the inbuilt MS media centre interfering with TVersity. But other than that it runs and I never have to restart the service. ... 1 other thing was VMware. Caused havoc. Had to bind TVersity to my physical NIC IP, otherwise it ran into issues as well. |

Are the files you, difficult people, wanting to run not natively compatible with the 360? Probably a dumb (obvious) question. last edited by Triamks at 10:01:11 25/May/08 |

Definately works with the 360, I didn't actually compile it, comes as a pre-compiled module for my Thecus Nas thingy. |

I followed the instructions on the uShare site but I've seen some people set different/extra routes, so not sure what it's supposed to actually be for that. |

I got it working last night - turns out I need to restart it when I actually try to connect. Once I do that it seems to be pretty stable.
Some questions: 1) Playback on the xbox 360 is nowhere near as smooth as on my regular Xbox - it looks like it's dropping some frames. I haven't tested anything other than uShare yet so not sure if this is just an artifact of uShare or some other configuration issue? 2) I downloaded a 1080p sample video from the Windows Media HD showcase (the T2 trailer) and tried to play it, but it said it didn't recognise the file type - it's just a .WMV that plays normally on my PC. I got a 720p sample video and it worked fine - I recall something about the X360 not playing 1080p but when I google for it the first hit is an AusGamers news item saying 1080p support was being added more than a year ago. Can it play 1080p content? |

I've had no problems playing 1080p content. I've played HD Xvid AVIs and HD H.264 files, no issues. I haven't tried WMV, but I know that works, because converting to WMV used to be the only way to get HD videos to play on the 360.
And about the stuttering, is it a network issue? Do the files play fine if you play them from USB? |

Get it working using vista media center.
That'll let you see like when its working properly. I have not seen either of your problems. |

And about the stuttering, is it a network issue?I don't think so because my Xbox w/ XBMC can play the files fine. It's not really a stuttering, just I can see a few dropped frames here and there - most people probably wouldn't notice it, but I'm pretty attuned to that sort of thing in video. Do the files play fine if you play them from USB?Good question, I'll try when I get home. this is the video I was trying (~120mb T2 trailer); if anyone else can download it and see if it works on their setup that'd be awesome |

setup TVersity on your windows box and see if it streams fine from that. It'll only take you 10 minutes to setup and have running if that. I've just done the same and can stream non-transcoded 720P perfectly. Haven't tried 1080P as don't have any of that content.
