For $1600 I would go the IBM X61 without blinking - but no CD/DVD builtin but who cares.

JigZie what uni is this person going to? Don't most universities have all this s*** on campus? I've never needed a laptop at uni before. EVER. I reckon it's similar to getting a mobile phone for the first time: you never need it and can't see why everyone uses them so often; then you get one and you have to have it on you 24/7. I say, get by without a laptop. Organise your uni life man!

I've never needed a laptop at uni before If you do any coding or simulations in your degree, it really helps being able to take your development environment (ie, installed and configured apps) with your wherever you go. Many program settings aren't saved on the uni PCs, which is a pain in the arse when you change computers (have to set it up again from scratch). |

Seriously, wtf is up with that room full of people using laptops? They don't suddenly make you smarter. they're Americans dude. if you're used to sending your kids to summer camp each year and paying over $5kUS for their clothes and fees over summer then dumping $5 on a crappy notebook that all your friends agree is awesome suddenly makes sence. who are you to deny little Johnny a job at the law firm that his best friends, bothers, sisters, boyfriend's Math partner who's Dad is a manager who runs the office.... just because he doesn't have an Apple notebook. JEBUS!! now don't you go starting s*** and emailing all these peeps that they're running s*** computers now - they all have younger brothers and sisters ya know. WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDRENS !%$#!%$!#@ btw - the new Apples rock.. but I still can't use one day to day instead of my new Lappy. last edited by koopz at 22:40:36 29/Apr/08 |

If it's just for uni work, just get a cheap one from Dell. I don't see why she'd need a $2000 laptop for uni work, unless she's doing something requiring a lot of power, like 3D or something.

Look for something good quality. That is -> Fujitsu / Sony / Lenovo.
Otherwise go for maybe Dell / HP / Asus. Asus have 2 year warranties. |

Yeah I didn't think you needed a laptop for uni, but the QUT-GP library is sometimes is a fight to the death to get a spare computer. Saying that... cbf'd taking one to uni.

I second Dell, but IMO the big thing for laptops is WARRANTY. They break at the drop of a hat even if you're ridiculously careful with them.

well, my dell is still going strong and it gets excessively used, moved lots and not treated all that well
but yer, thats why you buy dell, coz they are so good with their warranties; |

I'm typing this on a Dell laptop. Customisation and warranty for the win.
Make sure you browse their different models and different base systems before you start configuring your laptop. Some base systems are cheaper than others once you stack your wanted features on top, so it helps to fiddle for a while :) For example, a $900 base system + your wanted extras might be $1300. But if you start with a $1100 system it might throw in some of your features for free and the total may be $1200 for what you're after. Also some Vostro and Inspiron models are almost identical but have different prices and warranties (who knows why). |
