Best deals you will find are either on ebay or OCAU photography forums (check the marketplace).

About a month ago we bought a 40D with a 70-200L USM f/2.8, 18-55 f/3.6 IS, 580EXII flash, external battery, and 40D battery grip. Along with that was 2x Extreme IV 4GB cards, and an Extreme III 8GB. Yep, spent up big ;P

Already had a 300D w/ a 6 batteries and 8 2GB Ultra IIs, an 85-200 f/5.6 and 18-55 f/5.6.

Will try get you the price/supplier details when I get home this afternoon.

Damo I bought the 24-70 f/2.8L from B&H Photographics in the states (www.bhphotovideo.com). It came to a total of $1200 AUD with shipping to my door (it arrived 3 days after I ordered it). Buying L glass from the US isn't a problem, as they have an international warranty, so if there's any problems with sharpness upon arrival you can still take it to a Canon repairer free of charge.

FWIW, the *best* deal that Photo Continental could do me on the same lens was $1800.

For the body, buy it from d-d-photographics (www.d-d-photographics.com.au). They're a grey importer who give you a Mack warranty on the body. Cheapest in Australia, incredibly reliable from what I've been told (although I haven't bought from them before). The 40D is currently going for $1259 AUD there at the moment. That's grey stock, but like I said, it comes with a warranty.

But yeah, NEVER buy glass in Australia. Always buy from O/S. Like I said, buying from B&H, it still got shipped to my door probably faster than half of the Australian based retailers would have been able to get it there, and at half the price of the Australian RRP.

pharcyde, thanks heaps for that..

mack warranty..let me see if i get this straight..it's a warranty that is given to you if you buy from a grey importer that is valid here so you can goto any authorised canon shop/repairer and they can fix/swap..so you dont have to send back to where you bought from??

am i close with the understanding on that?

I've never had a Mack warranty so I don't know from first-hand, but as far as I'm aware it's pretty much a mirror-image of the manufacturer warranty, however the authorised repairers would be different. You might just want to call D-D-Photographics and ask them directly about it. Either way, you save hundreds on the body, and you still have a fully valid warranty.

Like I said though, there's absolutely NO reason to not buy your lenses from B&H. None whatsoever. No downsides, only massive savings.

yeah - but the entry level consumer stuff.

chase down Xaos if he's available.

personally - I find him a real pain to talk to, but he really, really knows his cameras.

he's a site sponsor, but is choosy about who and how he does deals for

Yeah I'm in a similar boat, I am chasing a 17-55 2.8 IS, was contemplating getting it through BH, but I am a little bit worried about warranties, customs smashing me for GST, etc, etc so I am hoping someone I know goes to HK for me..

Okay, stuff we got:
The 70-200L f/2.8 USM lens came from http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/
Cost us I think $1540, it's come down in the last few weeks. Local stock. We also grabbed some high end filters for the lenses.

40D Camera body and battery grip came from Teds (Ringwood). They basically threw in the battery grip for the retail price of the body - $1699 total. Local stock.

580EXII came from Kirks Cameras at Ringwood (no idea if they have a site, google it), they threw in the external battery cradle for the cost of the flash. Flash was $620, Transmitter was $385.

SanDisk Extreme III and Extreme IV cards came from www.betterit.com.au - again, confirmed local (not imported) stock.

Hope this helps.

And how do you find the 40D raven... I've been thinking about getting either it, or a 450d.

It's pretty heavyweight - well built. Seriously fast too.

Takes a bit of getting used to the different way of handling settings to how the 300D handles them. It's seriously configurable though, to a degree you just won't get on a 450D.
Also, it uses CF not SD (which the 450D uses), so in RAW mode, 6 frames per second, I can't make an Extreme III card buffer.

Hijack: Anyone know the cheapest place to get the EOS 400D Body only?

Now that they 450Ds are out I'm hoping they'll be reduced
