I'm thinking of buying my mates old ford telstar 92 model. It's done 265k's
just had alternator changed. Apparantly the break light comes on when you break hard also. He's offered me $1000 for it. What do you guys think? He recently moved from canberra so I have to get plates changed, rego, roadworthy etc..(has no rego on it now) I only need something cheap and basic just to commute to work in. What do you guys think? Your advice/recommendation is appreciated. link to redbook http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/prices.php?id=62160 |

Yeah, why not mate. When cars get to that age it doesn't matter so much what the 'market' says is the value, you're more concerned about the condition its in, so it don't cost you too much.
Have it checked out by a mechanic first, just so you don't buy it for a grand and find that it's got $1200 worth of work to bring it up to roadworthy. Apparantly the break light comes on when you break hard also.Sarcasm? Or are you trying to say that you have to brake hard before your brake lights come on? If so, brake light switch, in front of the top of your brake pedal. Worth $10 or so, most can be adjusted anyway. |

V6 or 4cyl? is it the roundy shape one or boxy? I'd say no either way because they are pretty s***.

ahh I meant the break light on the dash.
It's the 6 cylinder, the roundish model not the boxish. Bear in mind, I'm not into cars so I don't care if people see me driving it. |

Electrics in them f*** up and are nto cheap to replace. You might need to get the brakes looked at as the brake fluid level is probably low hence the light coming on at hard braking. The v6 models are absolute c***s to work on so if things need to be fixed you're gonna get charged a lot for labour.

well he is mega old
a true family man would have been in the corolla, unaware he was getting smoked by a forester |

just had alternator changed. Apparantly the break light comes on when you break hard also. +1 for it's spelled BRAKES and if that light comes on it means there's a fault with the brake system somewhere that needs to be fixed or the handbrake switch is faulty (or so says the book on my car). Whether yours has a separate light for the brake system failure and the "handbrake is on" light I'm not sure. today it smoked a corolla off the line, i was very proud I want a rematch once my engine is run in |

I would personally steer clear of a 265k v6 telstar. It's not worth it no matter what you pay.

I found that at about the 15 year mark, my car just started crapping out. things like hoses cracking, electric problems, CV joints wearing out, wheel bearings going, oil/break/clutch/power steering leaks galore, alternator dying, starter motor dying. If you are mechanically minded you can fix up a lot of it pretty cheap but if you have to take it to a mechanic, it is going to cost quite a bit.

negative, spend another $1k and hit up the auctions to pickup a real bargain (for around 2k)
250,000k's is a lot of kays, if it hasn't been meticulously maintained all of its life it wont last and you'll end up with more problems |

my mate's always bragging about how he can get cheap, awesome cars at the auctions. When I bought my corolla the first thing he did was say "oh I could have got it cheaper at the auctions". All the cars he's ever bought from the auctions are complete s***boxes with bits falling off them, electrical problems, engine troubles, etc and when you point them out to him he's all like "man I knew it was like that I bought it cheap to thrash"...... cheap is $100 from some guy in whoop whoop, not $3k from an auction.

I'm driving one of those Telstar's around atm.
It's got well over 300,000kms on it. Still runs well. Interior is fine, electrics work. Suspenion is shot though and the brakes are way too touchy. So as a result u get this boat like rocking motion when braking or taking off. But it's ok cause I plan on buying a R33, so the transition will be seemless. |
