Hello,
I've been looking for a hall to hire on the north or south side for a LAN. Hall must have around 50 tables with seating, plenty of power points and parking for around $15-$20/hr. I've been checking it out on the net but the results have been vague so if you know of any that you've used or been post them up, any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

SwitchLAN used the Toombul Hall back in the day. I can't tell you how much the Hall cost to hire or how much I paid to attend the LAN.

It's the fact they won't hire you the hall unless you have decent (ie several hundred k's worth of) public liability + public indemnity insurance mate.

Thats the full sentence Martz, try learning to read. Yeah I can't read, fkn good one :/ My point was $15-$20 per hour is a bit rich. (oh yeah and I knew it was for parking, I was just saying it as an overall cost just to lan.) |

Silly Martz.
For example, Hall cost = 20$/hr. 8hr LAN = $20 * 8 = $160 for whole day of hall hire. 50 people at LAN = $160/50 = $3.2 per person. Therefore, the cost of the LAN could be as low as $3.2 each person to cover only the cost of the hall. last edited by Triamks at 13:41:30 22/Mar/08 |

plenty of power points You may have trouble with this too. For 50 computers I would expect you'd need over 120 power points, which you'll have to set up yourself, along with a genny. Remember it's not just computers, but network gear, and all the other bulls*** people bring to a lan, like fans, and heating elements to boil tea, etc.. last edited by Idol at 13:45:48 22/Mar/08 |

There's halls for hire on the southside. One near Carindale, across from the PCYC, a bowls club but I can't recall the name of it. And a school (Whites Hill Secondary I think) on Winstanley st Near Samuel St Village shops. Dunno if they'll be big enough.

$15-20/hr could imply just the cost of hiring the hall, if you charged 50 people $5 each thats $250, if it was $25/hr to hire the hall you could have a 10 hour lan, $10/pp and its a 20 hour lan
I think that was his point Next Event: Unknown |

I don't know if they do, but you can trust they'll do SOMETHING that leeches the power till theres a blackout. A heating element would do the job, I've never seen one, but I do keep my suspicious eye on alert.

faster net killed the lan... you need competitions and prizes to draw people in ($5 a head won't cut it).
some might say public liability killed the lan :) |

How far south? There's a public hall in jimboomba we used to LAN at, I dunno how much it was to rent the thing but I think each of us paid something like $15 for the entire day/night and there was only about 20 of us so it can't have been too much.

You may have trouble with this too. For 50 computers I would expect you'd need over 120 power points, which you'll have to set up yourself, along with a genny wtf? allow 1A per pc and you get 50A, thats 3x 20A circuts, most halls (esp those with real kitchens) will have 100A available to the building. Or consider that you have 3x32A available on most 3 phase outlets which are also common in halls. A genny is out of the question for many reasons, cost being the first. |

wtf? allow 1A per pc and you get 50A maybe if this was 1990. What's the minimum wattage anyone would have for their uber gaming pc(tm) these days? 500W? 600W? I know they don't run at that wattage constantly but you do get the afore mentioned d*******s plugging in kettles, coffee machines and ovens (the f***?). |

Yeah actually I did know that, so i didn't think it would matter whether I said Ausgamers or QGL. but saying Ausgamers on the QGL forums, has obviously created a stirr :( Hire a new team? You do realise none of the admins ever got paid or anything for all the work they did organising and running lans. Well then pay them.. Up the entry fee!! it aint rocket science. |

up the entry fee? to what? $50 per person? would you seriously pay $50 to play computer games for 2 days? especially considering you can do the same thing at home for whatever the cost of your isp is so say $70 for an entire month of low ping gaming?
If you're so keen to have a lan just gather up all your friends and go to a net cafe & lan it up there, or do what we used to do back in school/tafe, lan it up in one of your mates sheds or garage. Unless you all live in tiny little appartments then I guess you're screwed. |

I'd pay $50 for a huge lan at ANZ stadium, easy done... Playing in a 300+ player lan is a bit different to playing alone at home, or hosting a mini lan at your place... it's the atmosphere, comps, socialising, meeting up with m8's for uber lan, jolt cola, I'd personally pay $50 for that, and I'm sure a lot of other people would to??
If there was a QGL lan say every 3 months, saving $50 for each lan is piss easy... last edited by Martz at 20:57:47 25/Mar/08 |

I agree with martz though, It's definately the atmosphere.
you can play online till your hearts content, but the socialising and atmosphere of a real decent sized lan is definately more worthwhile. I would definately pay $50 to go to a decent 2 day lan. I'd even say I'd pay maybe $100 to go, as it's an enjoyable past-time of mine. It's like going to a concert, you spend almost that, but at a lan you get 2 days worth of enjoyment rather than 2 hours. Yes the internet has killed the decent lans, and turned half you pricks into hermits. A lan encouraged people to actually get out of their house and do something rather than sitting online playing WoW or gay ass games that is filled with keyboard warriors who can't handle losing. |

Lan's encouraged people to get out of their house and get into ANZ stadium for 2 days eating junk food and playing CS/quake3. You were still playing video games, just in a different spot. I for one would rather get out of my house and go paintballing or dreamworld or hell go-karting is awesome fun. Let's organise a qgl go-kart day. |

oh I thort it was excessive insurance costs I think it was hence the admins made no money out of it themselves, but upping the entry to whateva should alleviate this... Even up it to $70, I'd still pay that and it will reduce the number of immature teens at the lans. |

I can only speak for myself, but they couldn't pay me to run a QGL. If you don't want to do it, there's no amount of money that would make it worthwhile. 3 days of no sleep, network & power issues, complaints from nutbags, issues with warez and porn (having the feds turn up at a lan is not fun), issues with dopey teens trashing the place, cleaning up after 300+ people, catering for 300+ people, keeping 500 cans of Jolt cold, tracking payments from 300+ people, ensuring security of said money, ensuring the desk was always occupied etc etc The only reason I went through all that was so we could say at the end of the weekend.. "That kicked arse!" and for fun of getting that many people in a room to play games. |

Big lans suckedI think big lans were cool for a while, especially if you weren't involved in running them. I agree that the Yeronga lans (around 60-80 peoples) were certainly more fun. Broadband has killed the lan a bit, but as a couple of people have mentioned above, it's very much about the atmosphere and catching up with mates. Organised comps where you could smaq talk in person was fun, and the whole spectator side of things gave it an air of excitment. |

the HUUUGE lans were a bit of a letdown. needs more quake dm, q2 ctf and ut with the chaos or death ball mod. I don't know if this thread is still all about halls or whether its deteriorated into something else but one thing to look for would be aircon if you're going for a summer lan. Winter isn't so bad but still gets pretty damn hot inside a closed hall with 100 x 400w computers going all night. edit: oh and I know what you mean mantra. at our lans I hardly got much play in since I was always the one who had to fix everyones computer. hey whoop i can't see the network, hey whoop i can't get into the game hey whoop my computer is on fire OMG LET ME PLAY. last edited by whoop at 01:44:53 27/Mar/08 |

Wow, a LAN thread on QGL started by someone who's *not* me. That hasn't happened in a while.
Alright D-Sub, so back in the day SwitchLAN used a couple of halls: - Toombul Shire Hall (no idea on cost, our sponsor paid) - Zillmere PCYC (our best venue to date, around $400 per day though!) - Nudgee International College Auditorium (unavailable to outside bookings) Your best bet would be scout halls or local community centres or at an absolute outside, school halls. Scout halls will be cheap as chips, but will have crap facilities and very bad power. Local community centres will be slightly more expensive, but are more likely to have the numbers of tables, chairs and powerpoints you need. School halls are likely to be more expensive again (encroaching on the $300+ per day) and will generally have better facilities, tables, chairs and power. Public Liability Insurance isn't as expensive as some people would have you believe. For MotherLAN (200 people, last event), we paid something like $600~, which gave us cover for 200 people at our events for 12 months. I'd imagine that it would be somewhat cheaper for 50 people. I don't really feel like rattling on about this for too long, so if you want some more information shoot me an email at lits-at-switchlan-dot-org. Alternatively, you could rock up to our next event!
