http://aaron-77.com/legs_11feb08.jpg yes, those are both my legs. lololol quick history: Oct 6th, 2007 - Completely ruptured right achilles playing netball In a boot for 3 months to let it heal Jan 1st, 2008 - Out of the boot Jan 6th, 2008 - Tore the gastrocnemius fibres of the musculotendinous junction. Basically, I tore the calf muscle where it becomes the achilles tendon. Not a complete tear, but 60% of the way there. Another 6 weeks or so in the boot. So nearly 4.5 months of crutches and boot and the result is the legs above. The left I reckon is even larger than it was at the beginning Pretty funny story all up (now. Wasn't when it happened) |

Goddam, you're leg got that ruined just from playing netball? Gym teachers didn't make us do 10 minutes of stretches before sport for jokes eh.

where my calf at? muscle atrophy from lack of use. quite normal, however you need to work on that leg to bring your strength back up. and you also need to stop protecting that leg and favoring the other one. been there and done this with my knee fracture last year - and i work in a hospital and see this sort of thing all the time. go and see a physio if you aren't already, and get a gym/exercise program that will be tailored to work the areas affected by your various injuries. |

also...
The left I reckon is even larger than it was at the beginning of course. you have been running around for the last 4 months basically favoring the left leg. i was on crutches for 10 weeks, my left leg and shoulders beefed up like buggery. my right leg is almost the size of the other again. give it time. |

should have seen the leg after the first 3 months in the boot when it hadn't been used at all. it was totally just skin and bone. never realised there was such a noticeable edge to the shin bone.
the leg has already beefed up about 10% in the last 2-3 days I reckon just from not relying on the boot so much. that was the main idea for taking the photo - to compare it in a few days and see how it's improving. i haven't seen a physio. the specialist i went to didn't seem to think it was entirely necessary. he gave me some stretches to do to get it ready, and those alone have been great. when i mentioned i have an exercise bike he suggested jumping on that on very low resistance to start with, which I've only just started doing (been too lazy lately). |

it will take a long time to go back to the size that it was.
do your exercises - your other limbs will thank you for it, and i wont see you in my workplace. |

DC: yeah, put on a few kg's in the past few months. getting around on the crutches was tough work, which was probably good otherwise i would have put on more weight. good tricep workout, that's for sure :)
I'm getting emails from the fun run series i was doing last year reminding me the first one is coming up soon. I wish I was running. :( I've lost so much fitness, and i can't see me doing any fun runs till maybe next year. gotta give this another 3-4 months yet before it's fully healed before i even consider anything like that. Jim: first injury was I just went to start running from a standing start and away she went. from what i've heard that's how most achilles injuries happen - pushing off on a dorsiflexed foot (foot pointing up relative to the leg) second injury i stepped on my cat in the dark (embarassing much?) and i must have flinched pretty severely in trying to get off him. it was essentially a completely new injury, but was related to the first cos the muscle would have been so atrophied as well as shortened from having had limited movement for 3 months. |

did you get key hole surgey for the achilles or something?
Wheres your scar? At least you don't have to use a shower chair anymore! Or wrap your leg in a plastic bag... |

no surgery - it healed by itself.
the specialist i saw is a bit anti-surgery with the achilles. he feels the potential risks are too high given that surgery doesn't really gain much in regards to healing time and final result. he will operate if the two ends don't meet up, but if they do he prefers to avoid it. in contrast, he's not afraid of slicing and dicing when it comes to repairing an anterior cruciate ligament, so it's not that he's strictly anti-surgery, just on the achilles. was fine by me. any time you don't need to get cut open is a good result i reckon. and yeah, standing in the shower is so awesome. at least i could take the boot off to shower in tho - much better than the first 4 days while i was wearing this :P |

Thread clearly should have been titled "Dude, where's my calf?" think it was meant along the lines of ... WHERE'S...MY...CALF...AT.... wheres my calf at...wheres my calf at. as in the terrible 'where's your head at' song oh and also looking up netballers skirts (i imagine it was indoor mixed) its not all that pretty most of the time. i play indoor cricket 4 nights a week and the netball form is generally pretty poor apart from one or two ladies per team. |
