Activision today announced Call of Duty 4 was the number one worldwide seller across all games released through 2007. According to data collected from GFK, The NPD Group and Chart Track, more than seven million units of the game have been sold at retail since its launch in November. In addition to strong sales, Call of Duty 4 also recently overtook Halo 3 as the number one played game on Xbox Live, according a report from www.majornelson.com.

From the press release:
We’re very excited about this achievement especially given so many competitive titles this year," said Will Kassoy, senior vice president, global brand management, Activision Publishing, Inc. "Consumer and critics agree that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the best games ever created and further establishes Call of Duty as one of the premier brands in the industry. This ground-breaking game and franchise continue to establish new standards by which all other action games will be judged."
Of course, Call of Duty 4 came in at a very close number two in our AusGamers Game of the Year feature, and scored a whopping 9.6 when we reviewed it last year.

I couldn't play it on console...I tried...just so much better on PC. Though still average in my opinion. Visually very nice though.

I played a bit of this in multiplayer at the weekend at a friends place. I'm totally sold, now I just need to buy it and find the time to play through single player.

I found it really hard to find the time to finish the single player campaign, because i was so caught up leveling up in MP. i think i now have some understanding of how/why people get addicted to WoW.

I just got this a couple days ago. I played the multiplayer during the beta, and I forgot how much fun it is. Even on the 360, it's still really fun to play.

I haven't read the full report but I assume it's doing so well against/better than Halo 3 because it is;

1) Way more awesome
2) Available on 3 (or 4?) systems

Well, it's actually being played by more people on Xbox Live, which is obviously only counting the number of people playing the 360 version.

That's pretty nuts its beating Halo 3; I would have assumed Halo was miles in front of something like CoD due to its sheer genericness and mass market appeal.
The Call of Duty name has a pretty massive mass-market name now, I see it name-dropped much more often in TV shows than Halo. It's pretty much replaced Halo as the US frat-boy multiplayer game of the moment.
