Make sure your underpants are on the same way as when you arrived. Can never be too sure what the hell's going on when you're under their spell.

Never been, always wanted to see if it was indeed true that they could put you in some kind of trance. So please post on your experience when you get back <:

qmass, I'm guessing your saying hypnotherapy is bulls*** and/or a placebo. I dont understand why people think placebos are so bad?!?! Like medication, hypnotherapy, Regligion etc etc, if the placebo effect on the person is one of happiness and makes them feel a bit better about life then what can be so stupid about it?

I went for smoking and it worked for me.
I had to try and not piss myself laughing during the middle of it, with some of the s*** she was saying and felt awake the entire time. After it I was addicted to water for about a year, would sleep with a bottle next to my bed and everything lol, but only ever had a drag on a smoke once about 5 hours after being hypnotised after getting really s***ty at the then missus due to wanting one so much. It tasted like s*** and threw it away. Other than that never touched one since. Sure it might be a placebo but either way I don't care, it worked and cost me bugger all in the grand scheme of things to what I was paying for a pack a day. |

she replaced the nicotene addiction with water apparently.
Either way drinking 3 odd litres of water a day is good for me, well a bit better than a pack of smokes a day :) it's funny, this was a few years ago, and I've gone from being a smoking couch potatoe to really into sports/fitness etc. Hypnosis was the best thing I ever did, but I would have to assume what works for 1 person, wouldn't for another. |

i know several people that have become non smokers, someone that has stopped gambling, and someone that had hypnotherapy for weight loss. i went to a hypnotherapist to fix some social anxiety issues i had (barely left the house). now i can't stand to let any opportunities for socialising go by
i used self hypnosis to become a non smoker just over 5 years ago. i was smoking 40 ciggies a day and havent had a ciggy since. i know several other people from these boards have also used various self hypnosis methods successfully to give up the ciggies aswell doesnt work for everyone, works for plenty enough to prove that its obviously not bulls*** though. anyone that states otherwise hasnt got a clue. it doesnt matter how (unless it causing more harm) or why it works, as long as it works. |

Yea, my next door neighbours saw a hypnotherapist for smoking, having both smoked for more than 20 years. Both haven't smoked since. Can't remember exactly how much they paid, but was only around the $150 mark.

I have been looking into hypo as a way to stop biting my fingernails. Can anyone recommend a therapist?
I wanted to go to this place as he is a medical doctor and you get medicare rebates. (costs $130 for a one-hour session but you get a Medicare rebate of 91.70). The only problem is that he is not really open after hours very often. http://www.yellowpages.com.au/brandpackages/505/4981505/logo.gif http://www.yellowpages.com.au/brandpackages/505/4981505/brand1.gif http://www.yellowpages.com.au/brandpackages/505/4981505/brand2.gif This place is another option as it is in the city but no rebate. ($99 for 1.25 hour session) http://www.yellowpages.com.au/brandpackages/168/5026168/logo.gif http://www.yellowpages.com.au/brandpackages/168/5026168/brand1.gif http://www.yellowpages.com.au/brandpackages/168/5026168/brand2.gif Thanks for recommendations last edited by operator at 09:51:55 27/Jan/08 |

my mrs was considering trying the hypno to stop smoking, but was put off by the 500dollar price tag just at the moment. how's the self hypno work? had you guys that did hypno failed at coldturkey and patches, etc before? what! my mother is a hypnotherapist and if you were paying $500 to give up smoking youd get atleast 10 sessions for that price. hypnosis completely works but only on stuff you want to let work, in other words you cant make someone do something they dont want to, but the whole point to going to hypnotherapy is get help with something you do want. and people go for all kinds of reasons generally phobias and addictions. ive seen some cool hypnosis s*** like this one lady got told that a metal spoon as 1000degrees hot and then the therapist touched the lady with the spoon and the ladys skin blistered. |

Hypnotherapy is nothing more than agreeing to do what the other person tells you to do. There is just a bit of mystic hype or a show put on to motivate you. There is no evidence that anything else is happening apart from anecdotal evidence.

the brain is pretty powerful and essentially all hypnosis is is programming/reprogramming of the brain and subconcious. While it sounds like a crock, the skin reacts in that way as a reaction, yes the burning helps it blister, but the skin probably does it as some form of defense mechanism. |

I don't think you can claim it on medicare. You would need a Dr referral and it says here that 'tobacco use disorder' is not covered by medicare: http://www.cpph.com.au/medicarenews.html

One of the lecturers was telling me there that there was a guy that used various mental tricks on business management people to condition them.
None of them had any criminal record but by the end (without actually suggesting it) he got them to attempt to rob an armoured car (he had given them water pistols but conditioned them to think they were real). So I guess in theory there is no reason why a hypno couldn't do the same thing? |

He was a lecturer, a guy in a position of authority, and the business people were probably paying for classes - so why wouldn't they do what he says?
You can't say whether he actually convinced them the toy gun was real or not. You have no ability to determine what really happened in another person's head. last edited by Idol at 08:34:43 30/Jan/08 |

Skin blistering is a physical reaction to heat, the same way plastic will blister if you hold a lighter up to it.

i have already explained it to the best of my ability and understanding, im not a hypnotherapist, ive only seen a hypnotherapist do it, and at the time of witnessing it i went wtf how is that possible, you have to burn something to make it blister aka plastic as you described, then when i was told that skin isnt plastic and the blistering in plastic is a chemical reaction to heat where as the blistering on skin is a reaction from the brain to heat. whilst they have similar results they are seperate processes which can be triggered by seperate things. as previously explained and ill quote myself to so i dont have to repeat myself
its the same as when you put your hand under cold water and at first it feels hot because the brain hasnt told your body that its actually cold, with hypnosis you can increase that effect to the point that the skin reacts and blisters. with that in mind you can make skin blister with a cold element, because again its the brain not knowing what todo and going into emergency mode to protect itself and heal itself instantly. and yeah hypnotherapy cant be explained by science, because its not science, its suggestion, which is why its very successful for things like smoking and nail biting, because people who go to get hypnosis done for those things have generally tried everything else and are really desperate to stop. so the power of suggestion works alot easier. but like i said, im no hypnotherapist, i just live with one that loves to harp on about this kind of s*** all the time and show me the neat tricks that shes learned. |

i thought it was common knowledge that people under deep hypnosis can be made to blister when they touch a spoon at room temperature - just by being told it was hot and they will blister when they touch it
hell you can even cut someone under hypnosis and tell them not to bleed and they won't, until they come out of it i always thought the effect was similar to stigmata http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stigmata |

I don't understand why they're hurting people under hypnosis.. Is it just to prove a point? So cruel.
I'd hate to come out of it and be burnt to blisters. |

Your skin doesn't blister because your brain tells it to. Go and stick a lighter up to a dead guys skin and it will blister.

Your skin doesn't blister because your brain tells it to Usually no, but it can when you're under hypnosis. At least that's what I've heard from doctors. |
