Gever Tulley, founder of the Tinkering School, talks about our new wave of overprotected kids -- and spells out 5 (and really, he's got 6) dangerous things you should let your kids do. Allowing kids the freedom to explore, he says, will make them stronger and smarter and actually safer. This talk comes from TED University 2007, a pre-conference program where TEDsters share ideas. |

some great ideas. all of which i have done an let my boy do in a controlled environment
however very very poorly executed. would have been worth buying a case of piss and getting someone who can give a talk ..give a talk. |

getting someone who can give a talk ..give a talk I dunno dude - public speaking is some scary s*** when you're not used to it, and the guys is going for it there. in much the same way he's speaking of opening up the horizons for kids he's doing much for the same for himself there by getting up in front of all those people. it's pretty clear that he's not comfortable doing it - prolly cause he's an it geek or something :P |

i dont know many parents but if its true that young boys dont get a pocket knife these days then f*** society.
i was so excited when i got mine id carve my name into everything, letter box, front door, bedroom wall. i got scars on my fingers from it too, i also pulled apart all my toys with it. infact im pretty sure ive got my first knife stashed away somewhere. |

That was really cool, and I completely agree with the message. My niece and nephew are probably a little over-protected, and it wasn't really noticeable when they were small but as they've been getting older it's been more and more noticeable that they're too protected. They just seem more afraid of things and more afraid of trying things compared to my other niece and nephew.

It's like parents these days have forgotten how their life experience helped them grow. I reckon learning by your mistakes is great thing and people should let others make them.
