I have a client who bought one back from the states. He knew it couldnt use the phone functionality here but got it anyways. He wants to know if it can sync emails with the Exchange server over their wireless. I've researched (googled) it, and theres talk there will be a solution, but nothing definate.

Anyone looked into this yet or done it?

AFAIK there is no way to do this yet. You pull mail via IMAP if you setup your exchange box, but then you loose out on calander entries, tasks etc

as Epic said no. IMAP will get your email, and apparently you can sync calendar/contacts via USB to your PC.

keep the Iphone out of the Enterprise!

Wait for the SDK, you might be able to do something when users start releasing software for it.

another option you've probebly thought of would be to get him to use outlook web access or outlook mobile access from the iphone through safari.

When I go to Mail under my iPhone, it has 3 options: Exchange, POP, IMAP. I havent used the exchange option mainly because I dont have an exchange server so I cannot answer the question fully. But it does have 'exchange' support in some form.

thanks guys. I tried the Exchange option but it doesnt do anything, no errors on Exchange end and just a timeout on the phone. Will tell him ti wait. He's not got going to bother trying to unlock due to the chance of it shagging it with the new firmware. By the way, whats the eta for aust?

Ask telstra that one.. As they're the only ones with a national EDGE network, unless Apple's going to wait until they release a 3g iPhone to talk to one of the other carriers..

Telstra use 3G 850Mhz same as Cingular US, which is in the firing line for 3G iPhone, and more importantly Telstra uses the same voicemail vendor as Cingular, so when you're looking to implement visual voicemail and all the iPhone specific features that is a huge plus for a telco (they aren't a software company). Optus also use the same voicemail platform but don't have anything like the coverage nor even a 3.5g-like hspda network.

Telstra to me seem the very likely choice. What's an unknown is If we get a 'all data is free' deal, seeing Telstra would not be keen to devalue their 850 investment.

I don't think Telstra will get the iphone, unless apple remove their call revenue sharing clause from the contract.

Why would Telstra want to share their mobile call revenue with Apple after paying a massive chunk of change for the rights to sell the handset and then just have people hack them to use on whatever network?

Meh, just use OWA if you're org supports external access. Exchange IMAP hasn't been very good from my experience in the past.
