Topic: Buying stolen stuff...

I was looking at Nano's in the trading post and stumbled across a bargain. $150 for 8G video Nano (latest gen) and still sealed in the box. So I figure I'll shoot this guy an SMS and see if he still has it... he replies, "I have 15".

So I'm figuring they could have "fallen off the back of a truck". I'm keen to get a few if they are that cheap (for family members etc). Basically I was going to rock up and see if they ARE still sealed and buy 2... if they work ok I might go back so I can ebay a couple.

If they are stolen, what does that mean for me as a buyer? Obviously there's not going to be a warranty and I understand that if they don't work then I'm screwed... I mean in terms of legalities. As long as I don't ask where he got them am I sweet?

If the police find the gear, you'll lose it and possible be charged with accepting stolen goods unless you can prove you didn't know that they were stolen. Just don't ask to many questions from the seller. Don't leave your name and details with this guy too.

Yeh that's what I was thinking... If I go I'm going to take a friend too so he can say that I never asked where he got the stuff from.

if you go ahead and buy one of them now, you've basically incriminated yourself by publicly demonstrating here that you suspect they might be stolen

Jim has a point, but the thing is you don't know 100% that they are stolen, you just have a suspicion, I mean come on...how many people just happen to have 15 nano's to sell?? The whole thing does sound a little fishy.

n consider what happens when you get a 'brand new' piece of gear still in it's packing & when you open it, it doesn't work. $150 might be cheap for a good one... but it's crap for a factory reject someone may have got a pile of. :/

Don't complain when you got bitten, cause what goes around comes around.

Bought a brand new n73 in it's packing for $350, 2 weeks later it got phone locked.

In saying that, it's the only time in my life i got ripped, and that's fuggen boos***.

I'm pretty sure there was a heap of them stolen just recently and was a pretty big news story. Will have to look for it. If it was me.. I wouldn't touch em no matter how cheap there were...

you'd be suprised how stupid drug f***ed bludgers are.
They need their fix and they need to offload this stuff quick so they can get their cash and their fix.

My dad pointed out that apple might be able to block serial numbers through itunes or something if they are registered as stolen?

He also pointed out that he could just be a reseller... he said I should ask about the warranty and ask if I can get a receipt, and if he doesn't cough it up to report him. Sounds like a lot of effort so I just ordered a brand new touch online.

Speaking of, I got this random number SMS'ing me last week asking me out to dinner. I was fairly certain it was a wrong number (because I just sleep with chicks and give them a fake number). Anyhoo I actually googled the mobile number and the first hit had the chicks work place, name and photo.

yeah man if shes asking you out, that implies she'll pay for it too.

shes probably loaded anyway, so wouldn't mind paying for a poor artist like yourself.

exactly, but there are people out there that will buy stolen goods so it won't matter if you buy it or not, it won't change the theft industry.

you're all grownups now, think for yourselves.

I'm against purchasing stolen goods regardless, so adopt that if you will.

since when does 'thinking for yourself' imply 'never learning or considering information from others' ?

in that case sometimes you gotta think for yourself and not take onboard everything that people say...

I can't see that your response even made sense in the context of my question

anyway, if what you claim is true there'd be no point in advertising
