Freedom of speech is fine, as long as you don't do it in public.

In 2003, the female country band, The Dixie Chicks, are at the top of their game being one of the most successful bands of all time. However with the US invasion of Iraq about to begin over frustrated worldwide objections about this needless war, one of the Chick vents off the cuff in concert about being ashamed of US President George W. Bush. This statement sparks a firestorm of organized and personal right wing attacks against the Chicks for daring to think they have the right to express a negative personal opinion about the President. This film covers the band's effort to ride out the turmoil that would leave their careers under a cloud, but would eventually give them a opportunity to grow as great artists who bow to no one.

This just got a release out here on DVD this week and while I'm no fan of these guys or country and western this doco is extremely good and worth the watch. Starts off back in 2003 while they're doing a concert in London and the lead singer says to the audience, "we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas". From then on it documents the hate campaign, mainly from rednecks, which involves destroying their CD's and boycotting their music on radio. Funny thing is by the end of the doco years after the comment was made, people finally realize Bush is a lying bastard and the Dixie Chicks are back in the top of the music charts again.

The cool thing I found while watching this was thinking I think I used to hate them as a band but I dunno why. Maybe because they are country and western and I can't stand that type of music. But after sitting thru this they come across as smart, funny and extremely talented musicians.

So if you're after something a little different you should check out this very cool doco. Also, that Cocaine Cowboys doco is out this week too and if you haven't seen that yet make sure you check it out. It's amazing hearing from the guys that were there and listening to these awesome stories of drugs smuggling and murder going on in Miami in the early 80's.

I might watch it, if they weren't country singers.

Better watch it Rev, I think paveway has a thing for you, he seems obsessed as to what you look like.
