Hi Thar,

Was just wondering what everyone used at the Office for email?

Am getting more and more emails a day because of work and I just find Thunderbird a bit s***house overall.

I know I could google or theres even a this wikipedia page of a lot of them. The only thing it is missing is personal opinions.

So, what do you use?

Gmail. I label every email with what it's about, very easy to search. Easy to pop the emails off into thunderbird if you decide to at some point.

Outlook 2003 - rapes memory, sucks with images, but works well with exchange so what can you do

I am using Outlook Express and have been for as long as my email goes back, which is a long f***ing time. I am thinking about making the change to Thunderbird but just haven't had time to do it. I have tried Outlook but don't like it, or the idea of my email collection - which dates back to like, 99 - getting put in some format that I might have to upgrade to.

I am interested to hear what you don't like about the T-bird though?

Outlook Express at home more out of habit of using it for so long but I use Evolution at work since I'm on Ubuntu there.

I find thunderbird pretty nifty, searching email is great, some great context menus that provide cool features when you click things

I have issues with it an imap though, it'll just time out and refuse to do anything unless I restart it which is pretty annoying. don't have the same issue with outlook connecting to the same imap server/account

would probably rather use outlook with exchange though I think, rules stored on the server rox when you're running a client at home as well, calendar is handy when your clients use it heavily for meeting invites and stuff

Yeah my main probably with it is cos we're running imap at work as well. I just tried out Outlook and didn't have as many issues.

Thunderbird with imap seems to either just time out a lot, half download stuff and stop or keep downloading something you don't want to.

I even get some weird error sometimes saying 'This server is not an imap4 server!' and then it goes back to working again.

And just my opinion Thunderbird doesn't really feel like a very polished product.

thunderbird for home email - nice and quick, easy to backup and restore (with mozbackup).

outlook 2007 for work email - bit of a memory hog but supports exchange and i like it's group calander function, aswell as activesync support for ipaqs and sonyericcson's calander system.

I'll rattle a few reasons off for you:

- don't want a web based interface
- don't want mail handled by some third party
- can't access work email
- often isn't suitable for doing work email from home even if it could
- don't want broken handling of mail sent to lists

Printing emails from gmail is horrifically ugly. I wish they had an external view that you could print.

Outlook 2007 at work and Thunderbird at home but considering a change since it continually pisses me off with it's wank IMAP support. Problems encountered are;

- Can't delete folders properly, complains because the "Deleted Items" folder isn't "Deleted Items/", the trailing / indicating it can contain sub folders so when it tries to move a folder to deleted items, it can't make it.
- Downloading images in preview mode, then f***ing downloading them again when I want to save them.
- Timeouts when connecting to the mail server, it just seems to fart and give up.
- This is not an IMAP4 server errors

I'm suprised so many of your organisations have already adopted Office2007. We're still using Outlook 2003. I find its quite good. Our change request for Vista/Office2k7 for 31/12/08 lol. Mind you, its being worked on at the moment.

Thunderbird is a dead product. It was dropped by the Mozilla Foundation in favour of Eudora (so I read)

How about... don't want @gmail.com ?

Eudora has been dead for a while, but its rumoured that Mozilla Foundation will be reviving it after they dropped thunderbird.

Outlook 2007 can eat a dick. Is there a way to turn off the f***ing s*** slow indexing that it does every f***ing time it gets a new email. Mother of god I want to kill it. Chugs...

Eudora.

You can use Gmail as a pop server for the sending and receiving of emails in any mail client. It's not too bad when you need to get your emails outside of your home PC's client.

I use gmail instead of my ISP web account for personal emails using eudora as the client at home and Gmail outside of home. Eduora for business.

I'm using Outlook 2003 at Work and Home. I've got my exchange server running with RPC over HTTP.....absolutely rox. Identical email at work or home. Also the Outlook Web Client for exchange is very nice indeed. The only s***ty thing about Outlook is that its such a resource hog.

Migrating from Outlook to Thunderbird is a cinch, going back to Outlook is a nightmare......third party conversion tool required, won't be making that change again.

We've just migrated over from Notes 7 at work. Notes is awesome system, just very expensive if you are only using it for email.

Why not use gmail? because every time i want to view my email i don't want to have to browse to it!

yeah I'm aware gmail can pop3 into other accounts but that'd mean moving my work email to pop3 and then allowing gmail access through firewalls. and that's not the only reason I wouldn't wanna use gmail at home anyway as I mentioned

mass: I find migration not too bad with imap, since both outlook and thunderbird support it. you can simply drag and drop your folders to/from exhange/imap. granted it is a chunky operation when you've got assloads of email dating back to the 90's...

Thunderbird at work, Notes at work. Ive been an exchange and domino admin, and have been purely a domino admin for the past 7 years, and find it a much better messaging platform than exchange. Of course the client is balls, but notes 8 hannover is out now and is very very sexy.

On a side note... we got hit with a notes exploit today... was a very nasty and well written exploit as well, as notes inbuilt security is quite strong. 153,000 mails, a 28Gb mail.box and crashed server later, things were back to normal :(

I recently upgraded my Domino quals and really like Domino / Sametime / Quickr as a email system. I find the eclipse framework a bit bulky still in 8 although it does look a lot sexier.

And I wish they would fix the RSS feed reader authentication through ISA proxy. :S
