I've playing around with Joost since the first Beta. I have to say that the concept is absolutely awesome. They are starting to get some big name signups for content providers, there will be upwards of 150 chanels soon. The vid quality varies a little but for the most part its awesome, this is the way TV should be. No more waiting for your show to come on, just browse the chanel and select the show/episode you want to watch. Its developed by the same guys who made Kazaa and Skype.

Its well worth the time to check it out. http://www.joost.com

Pretty much thats it, create a login, browse the channels and watch. There is a pretty good fight channel, Ministry of Sound channel, MTV, VH1 (coming soon), sci-fi channel etc. There are heaps more coming, they have signed deals with Viacom, WB etc. The only major requirement is that your PC needs pretty reasonable specs to run it well. I got a Core2 6400 with 2 gig RAM and 8800GTS and it is smooth as. As far as a network connection, I got ADSL2+ but a 1.5Mbit link should do it fine. It uses a combination of P2P and dedicated servers to stream the shows.

I can't say that I am hugely impressed with the quality of some of the channels. I do like the Fight Channel, those TKO guys are nuts. The Ministry of Sound channel is very good. On a good PC with fast connect it streams near perfect. I watched a couple of old Rocky and Bull Winkle eps last night, they also got Mr Magoo there. Has anyone had a look at the sci-fi stuff yet?

Once again if anyone wants an invite you can email me @ chindson@exemail.com.au

I've put about 12 other people on it so hopefully they will also offer up to invite if any QGl goers want in.

Thanks for the invite Mass. The whole concept is really good, just too bad with the country restrictions but am looking forward to playing around with it none the less. In an ideal world providing content online should eliminate region restrictions but I guess they'd probably work towards one day lifting them, putting the content in place is definitely the first step.

Too bad we couldn't rig up some sort of streaming proxy with a U.S. IP ;) no doubt would violate the terms and agreement.

It would be good, however I think foxtel would have something to say about it

Maybe but if they offered the same sort of service at Joost, the same amount of content offered on cable tv but at much cheaper rates than cable (reason I say it'd have to much cheaper is mainly due to bandwidth cost on the end users ISP plan, if you were paying the same amount as regular cable, you may as well just get that and a digital tuner card). Anyway, at cheaper rates it'd be something I'd be happy to pay for and if they offered it as freezone traffic to optus/telstra customers i rekon that would be a pretty good marketing ploy to attract a lot of customers, don't know that would be enough to pull me back into using optus or telstra as an ISP again but would still be a good idea none the less i rekon. Not sure that the mass population would be quite ready for something like this as a mainstream service but with the increase of US shows spreading around the interweb theres obviously a market there. Btw, I'm totally just thinking out loud here, nothing more.

I just got around to checking it out. I have to say I'm massively impressed with what I saw. Sure, it ate bandwidth like a bitch, the content was sparse at best and it crashed about 20 minutes in, but it had potential. If I wasn't so worried about bandwidth I probably would have watched for a lot longer. It's interesting, and I hope it gets the sort of support it needs to take off.

Just out of interest, is it the geographic restrictions that locked out the "Gong" [animé] channel? Or am I missing something?
