http://www.avinashv.net/2007/06/23/violence-in-video-games/

Since Doom was released in 1993, violent crimes in the United States have to 40% of what they used to be. Coincidence? Possibly, yes. However, the year Quake and Duke Nukem 3D were released, violent crimes fell by 4%, and a further 2% when Grand Theft Auto was released.

I don’t take that as mere coincidence.

Not surprising really since it gives people something else to be imaginative and violent with, but I'm sure no matter how you wish to source these articles and look at the data, the anti-Video Game lobby will find a way to reject anything found here.

Just because they happened in the same year, it doesn't mean one caused the other. This is just another poor use of statistics to push an agenda.

You know, last week- every day i ate cornflakes for breakfast, it rained in the afternoon. Coincidence? i think not!

You guys have sorta highlighted my point with the whole "he plays video games therefore video games caused him to be violent" :)

And yes, I'm a strong advocate of the "correlation != causation" argument, hence why I won't support global warming theories - that there's still no proof of causation, only statistical correlation.

i think violent games should be more accessible.

if everyone played violent games, then people would be more desensitised to violence and when someone started a violent attack others would be prepared to take them down.

for instance, if more people had played dead rising at virginia tech, someone would have picked up a lectern and knocked wu chung the f*** out.

For me, taking global warming seriously isn't about being 100% sure we understand climate change. We don't.

But it's irresponsible to ignore the possibility that global warming is occurring, given the dire and far-reaching consequences if it were true. Hence I assume the worst.

Really you have much more to lose from inaction than action (cutting emissions). Basic logic prevails here.

what's irresponsible, is us not all driving imported cummins diesels so that dodge, ford and gm would see a market and start exporting right hand drive pickups to us

These doomsayers can f*** off. They oversensationalise the issue because they think it's alright to deceive us because it's so important.

Why do we need to be deceived if it's so important?

Australia has real environmental concerns right now, with foreign pests, soil erosion, salt and the urbanisation of our rural areas + over fishing by our neighbours. And that's just some of the significant environmental issues we face right now. A potential 2-5' average temperature rise over 90 years isn't worth shooting our first born over.

Besides, you know...the whole icecaps melting raising the sea level and flooding huge areas of the world, leading to all kinds of knock-on problems for the human race.

But hey, so long as your immediate surroundings aren't affected, why give a f***, right ? Just crank up the aircon a bit more!

Those problems you mentioned are very important to be sure, but climate destabilisation is a big problem too, you can't just shrug it off and focus only on our country.

If you're concerned about global warming then drive a V8 like I do. You use my petrol (therefore oil) per km than smaller cars which in turn means we use up all the "limited" oil reserves in the world which in turn stops terrosim.

Haha that is the most bulls*** statistical comparison i have ever seen. I hardly think there would be a correlation between the two. Even if there were it would be insignificant.

Haha, nice joke :)

I'm assuming you're not serious, otherwise that would have been the dumbest, most misinformed and self-centred comment of the year.

The game comes out and all the crazy's are too busy playing x violent game. 1 year later they are bored of said game and go on a murderous rampage utilizing the skills he/she acquired when playing the game (LIKE BARREL ROLLS!).

As i just proved, it's the games fault. derrr.

So how much has violence been reduced since WoW came out and how much has welfare dependent ppl increased?!!

2. i can pull the shopping trolley out of the storm water run off pond at the end of my street where it's blocking a drain

The 2nd action, when compared to the first, is a significant contribution to improving the health of our earth

What
The
f***.

How does that "improve the health of the earth"?

Actually you know what, don't bother answering that. Your self-centred attitude towards the earth's climate is so f***ed up it it's not even worth arguing with you.
