Heya guys

Well as some of u know i recently managed to move from the uber speed ISDN (hahahaah) to ADSL2 with iinet and purchased my new Billion 7404something modem

Well i have issues :P

I remain connected to the internet, can download stuff, MSN stays connected etc but regularly browsing just doesnt happen.
Continuous "page not found" errors, pictures not downloaded in page, framework only downloads in some pages are driving me crazy.

The ISP have tried a couple of things but im thinking that since i am remaining connected to the net it might not be their fault?

The PC is brand new, i have AVG and the MS Firewall *and it does this same fault wether i have firewall and avg on or off...*
I also tried running CClean which found 800mb of random crap to delete and still the problem persists

Any ideas? (sensible ones :P)

thanks in advance :)

Couldn't hurt trying a different dns server,

Try changing it in your modem settings.

Yeah sounds like a DNS issue, unable to resolve the website names.

Try different DNS servers ^

"Can not be displayed" is the error

btw DNS settings were one of the things changed in prev attempts to fix problem by iinet

First of all, why are you still using internet explorer?

Second of all, need to do some more testing - when you're getting those errors for eg, try MSNing someone and make sure you are actually still connected and its not some phantom connection (ie, MSN just thinks you're still connected).

when i have these problems it´s with certain pages (myspace and facebook mainly :( ) and irregardless of what browser or which computer on the network i´m using

next time you have a period where you can't access QGL, drop to a dos prompt (start-run-cmd.exe) and ping QGL a la:

ping -t qgl.ausforums.com

If it starts timing out, you have connection issues. If all pings are returning normally but you still can't access the website your problem is prolly just on your PC.

You're not using wireless at all anywhere?

ADSL2 connection directly to my biliion modem, cable from my modem to my pc... all others in the house have to get it over wireless :P

but i get it direct hehe

why would waste downloads downloading something that windows comes built in with and works just as good.

sounds like an MTU issue

for some reason beyond my comprehension iinet often requires an MTU of as low as 1432, for more info here (if you can browse to it)

though if iinet did not get you to do this already i would be surprised

Anyone else see a funny A thing wherever pergay puts an apostrophe? What the s*** kind of whackass character set you using?

Is it a good idea to be pinging qgl if his browser can't access it? I'd suggest pinging something else instead like google or microsoft since it'd be rare for them to be down. Hell, ping 4 or 5 different addresses some local, some foreign and some hosted by your ISP.

i think that the idea is that it'll show if it's a "where da site at" problem rather than a "how do i download/display da site" problem

yeah they have this gayass key that's basically an apostrophe where it's supposed to be on the normal keyboard, and the real apostrophe is near the zero key and i'm lazy, but now that i know noone can see the fake one i'll use the real one EFFORT

thanks for all the suggestions guys

was back onto iinet support again tonight and they put a "senior" tech onto the question, and his answer was that it was mal-ware...

so they had me turn off every thing that was accessing the internet, i.e. msn, any browsers etc etc, and then run "netstat" from the cmd prompt

well about 80 lines of things using my internet popped up and the tech seemed to think that this was the cause...!

so i ran adaware (it found about 40 or so), ran AVG (which is supposed to run automatically all the time yadda yadda) and it found a few as well, but no virus found

so deleted every thing they found, waiting for the error to reoccur... lets see what happens :)

could be a torrent thing too, if you're using them

in some circumstances torrents will hose your broadband indeed, even though they don't seem to be using that much traffic

and netstat will report buttloads of connections in various stages of closing down long after you shut down torrents and the process has buggered off down the pub

if all else fails download and run TCPView and make a note of what programs are actually making all those connections

Well if it's malware that's responsible for all his problems, that's obviously not the case then?

aga - also try Spybot SD, it's a good tool as well

edit: thinking about it that first para sounds sharply critical of aga, which it's not supposed to be - it's supposed to be a general criticism of IE and how easily it is to get sploited

heyas

well i downloaded AVG and ran it, i rescanned with adaware, i scanned with Spybot SD (and manually removed the items it found since im too cheap to buy it :P), and then i looked at TCPview (insom suggestion!)

there was this one process "Dna.exe" that was running all the time and i was like wtf, i havent even used bittorrent for ages!

so i uninstalled bittorrent, and dna (which were two separate things in the add/remove program area) and lo and behold, i only have like 5 processes now... (in tcpview)!

so if this is the solution, a big thanks to Insom, but really a big thanks to all that have volunteered solutions...

here's hoping my browsing problems are a thing of the past :P

well it looks like you found out where the connections came from aga :D won't necessarily be the cause of the problem but it might

so DNA is just a content distribution thing using bit torrent protocol? interesting
