Sri Lanka to win the toss, send Australia into bat, and chase it down in 47 overs. |

Sending Australia in hasn't really worked out for too many sides over the course of the last few world cups. Having said that it should be one of the better games of the tournament because Sri Lanka have been fairly impressive so far.

sri lanka and new zealand are the only sides with bowlers to potentially outbowl australia as no team is going to out bat them it relies on the bowlers but without malinga it might hurt them a little, so if vaas and murali bowl well they have a good chance

His two main deliveries were checked in Perth on Thursday and results released on Saturday, showing he fell under the 15-degree limit of elbow flexing. What's that you don't know the rules of cricket? |

His two main deliveries were checked in Perth on Thursday and results released on Saturday, showing he fell under the 15-degree limit of elbow flexing. The rumour is that when he was tested before the law was changed to 15 degrees, he "imparted no spin on the ball" while being analysed. He may well be fine under the new laws but I believe at one point he was playing outside what were the laws of the game at the time. Having said that, he probably wasn't the only one. |

if sri lanka had murali and vaas for that match they would have had a great chance, the descision to rest them seems like an excuse if they do lose OR they dont want to give Australia practice against them ready for the finals

hahah the f***ing idiot pomme commentators on Sky Sports are talking about Sri Lanka being scared to play Aus in the semi's so essentially threw this game to avoid that....
Fkn idiots... Next they'll be calling match fixing. Saying that playing without Vass and Chucka, they had no hope anyways :p |

Yeah it's pretty funny - Michael Slater v David Gower and Mike Atherton. Slater is getting pretty fired up about it.
I don't think it's something Tom Moody would allow - throwing a game. I think it's tactical in some way, just not sure how. Perhaps it's just to freshen up two of their top bowlers who probably don't need that much match practice. But yeah, made it a bit of a non-event in the end. |

hahah yeah slats was getting fired up :P
and he is right, he basically said without saying what you two clowns are saying is that they threw the game and he couldn't believe they are having that conversation ! fyi gower and atherton were basically claiming that Sri Lanka essentially, by virtue of not playing chucker and vass, they threw the game |

Interesting to rest them, and as a result, the win it self means nothing.
How ever, the poor batting performance has no excuse, and that's about as much as we could have hoped to get out of this game, even wit chucker/vaas playing. |

It's a dangerous message to send though, resting your 2 remaining front line bowlers when another one is already out. Generally such drastic changes would only be made when the players would make no difference to the outcome, i.e. the opposition are completely outclassed and a 2nd string team will easily beat them. In this case it could indicate to some (most importants within the team) that the selectors felt they would probably lose anyway and there was no point risking players when they're already through. That could have an impact on their confidence and come back to bite them if/when they play Australia again.

what about australia resting players going to new zealand? yes at that point it turned around and bit them in the arse but sometimes its necessary
the batting was shocking but the fact its the same wicket that sa vs nz happened on, i wasnt expecting more than 230 or so, but australia seemed to bat really fkn well to finish it that quickly i dont think it would affect their confidence overly, the team pretty much knows they hinge on vaas and murali, and its only now with malinga do they have a decent pace option. sri lankan grass roots cricket needs to improve a lot but from what ive been reading theres some good players coming up through the local competition, which hopefully will mean a competitive sri lanka for a few years yet sri lanka should finish 2nd, and at worst finish 3rd which should still prove my australia v sri lanka final :) |

Interesting to rest them, and as a result, the win it self means nothing. I don't think that's true at all. Sri Lanka are easily one of the top 3 sides with us and the Kiwis. Therefore they had as good a chance as anyone to knock us off. Even though it would have made no difference to us making the semis, it would have reminded Australia about the losses at the end of our summer and that we have weaknesses, at the moment we're riding far too high on tournament momentum to be thinking about that. By tanking Sri Lanka threw away that opportunity, indicates they may be scared of us and most importantly continues our momentum - further burying the memories of the losses. |

what about australia resting players going to new zealand? yes at that point it turned around and bit them in the arse but sometimes its necessary Resting those players sent the message that Australia didn't want to play those games, which was then backed up by direct statements from the players. That meant it bit us in the arse then (possibly with repercussions next match), I think it's a lot more dangerous to be doing that deep into a world cup than in what are essentially warm up matches. |

in my opinion, based on what you have said its a 50/50 split. on one hand it could work well for sri lanka, resting the key bowlers that are going to do a lot of work in the semis and the final, and keeping trump cards (like murali and malinga) from australia until then
or, it could give australia the upper hand and demoralise sri lanka a bit |

It's definitely a risk, I expect Sri Lanka and Australia to play again so we might see which way it goes in the final.

alot of work, they f***ing are professional athletes, this is their job
they have to bowl 10 overs FFS! note I am not just pissed at the lankan's I even get pissed off at the aussies and the footy players etc etc that want to have time off or whinge their seasons are too long, hey guess what buddy joe average works 52 weeks a year for 50k (I think thats about the national average wage) 'professional' altheletes are paid up to 10 times that (if not more) and all they do is whinge get the f*** over it, ohh have to play ~15 games in 6 weeks.... if you make it all the way to the final! |

heardy, what i meant is that sri lankas bowling attack rests on 3 bowlers. most teams have 5 bowlers that share the load reasonably. whether they bowl 10 overs or not is not the problem, you dont want a bowler who makes or breaks games for you going in mentally fatigued
thats not really a problem for bowlers like tait or watson who have no mental capacity to get fatigued, but still :) |
