St Pats is on Saturday this year round, anyone got any plans? So far I've got a few mates heading in to the city around 11ish to watch the parade and then proceed to get stoinkered all day long.

It's funny to look at the differences between people who celebrate different foreign traditions, like Valentine's, Halloween and St Pat's. Some people will "celebrate" others like Valentine's because it is a nice day to show you love someone, but then bag out St Pat's Day, which is a nice day to celebrate St Pat chasing all the snakes out of Ireland.... also vice versa.

Not long ago it was Australia Day and everyone was defending their right as an Australian to wear the flag out in public, now I'm sure everyone will be defending their Australian right to celebrate their Irish heritage. I guess the good thing about Australia is we can do whatever we want and say it's our Australian right, and to stop us from doing it would be unAustralian. God forbid we start celebrating Muslim traditions! Wait, what?

I guess what I'm saying is, stop looking for reasons to get drunk and act like a tard.

For me personally, I'll be treating it like any other day of the year but I'll also be making an effort to avoid all the drunken retards wearing green, whilst being the same drunken tard I always am on Saturday nights.

You're making no sense Kat? I don't get what your point is.

It's all beer, doesn't matter if it's an ale, lager, stout or whatever...

Explain yourself.

It's beer.

But only if you believe what's written on the official Guinness website.

It's official...Guinness is beer

Silly girl, you should stick to stuff you know, like baking and mending and such.

Calling Gunniess beer is like calling RuPaul a man, while technically you are correct it just doesn't suit the label.

Marketing?.. I hardly think so. I haven't seen any 12 long stem green roses for sale anywhere or "trick or guinness" bags.

Sure there are elements of it that have gone beyond retarded, ie: anything that Gilhooleys or Dicey Rileys are doing, but the general gist is about the Irish celebrating their heritage and culture.

It's the same as Australia Day, US Independance Day, Frenchies Bastille Day, Canada Day and so on.

Ticman, its marketing, if your argument was true people all over the world would get blind and drink fosters on January 26. On Thanksgiving and or 4th of July we'd get blind on some awful yank beer.

I'd say that if you were American on the 4th of July you would be celebrating the day with awful yank beer and if you were an Aussie you would also celebrate Australia day (not with Foster's though, everyone know it's weak as camel piss) by bashing people up at Cronulla or at the BDO.

Considering that alot of Australians would have Irish heritage then it's no surprise that the day has some extensive celebrations. The same reason why they have large parades and celebrations in Boston & NY since alot of Irish immigrated there in years gone by.

Considering that alot of Australians would have Irish heritage

An interesting statement, several other ancestries would be as large (or larger) and probably get less interest in their national days. I have an extremely Irish name, the Irish "Smith" if you will, And at most I can claim 25% Irish (Irish/Corsican/English/Norweigan). I'd hazard a guess that alot of the people that claim Irish heritage are at most claiming a small percentage of their heritage from 3 and 4 generations ago, And like myself have no idea what the other parts of our ancestry have as national days. Their participation in St Pats day is mainly based around the "lets go to the pub and drink irish beer" marketing pitch, and there is nothing wrong with that but to deny that St Pats day is not marketing is silly. I atleast can excuse my ignorance of the other aspects of my family tree based on the fact that Irish is my paternal heritage.

... While your statements about NY and Boston explain why the parades started, I'd guess they are continued becuase they make money (directly or indirectly) or purely for tradition's sake, rather then as a tip of the hat to a generation of immigrants from 200+ years ago.

Speaking of the Irish, they are in with a sniff against Zimbabwe - Zims still need 9 off 11 with 2 wickets in hand. Go the Irish!

9 off 6, one wicket remaining.

Come on Ireland! They also have an Aussie in the team, so double score.

Marketing or not, they aren't trying to make you buy silly little heart shaped chocolates or overpriced novelty cards.

They are selling you beer, people! BEER!

You are complaining about a national day of celebration where people are encouraged to get plastered, and you call yourself Australians?

Oh for shame.

Holy crap, draw! Unbelievable. They came so close to winning it off the second last ball from what would have been the catch of the century, but it's still pretty good. The Irish are pumped - their game on St Paddy's day will be good value.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but it was pretty good viewing :)

short of st pattys day being an irish pride day its real meaning is kind of lame, st patrick juts being a guy that converted a bunch of druids into christians that is.

but as others have mentioned there are a s*** load of irish imigrants all over the world and the irish have quite a large sence of patriotism so good on em.
