Does anyone know if they actually ever sold XP Home and/or Pro in Academic Editions as anything other than upgrades?
I'm trying to track down a copy but none of the big software retailers are selling anything other than Vista these days. |

I just checked out MS's website and even the xp page tries to sell me vista. I'd say you're out of luck for a brand new copy troggles. Might have to hit up ebay.

Dick smith stock the Xp PRo upgrade acada version for $119. I'd just get one of those. During the install u just have to put in any microsoft OS ( doesn't even have to be a legit disc) for a few secs and it continues on.

If you aren't going to use a legitimate disc for upgrading, why would you be purchasing the software in the first place.

He's saying if you're not going to upgrade legitimately, why would you bother to buy it acquire the thing legimately. I specifically asked for "anything other than upgrades" because I don't have anything to upgrade from. |

How dumb do you wanna be? I don't see anything dumb with what Nathan said at all. You can't just be half legitimate .. to be legit you either do the install fully legitimately or not at all. |

OMG I didn't elaborate because I didn't think I needed to.....
Ok you have an operating system on your computer at the moment??? then just use the upgrade disk and it won't even ask you. Surely you have some sort of disk over the years like win95, XP, 98 lying around. It does not have to be an original just a disk for example even a disk with win98 cab files on it would do. It is not like it has a serial number that it reads and cross references that with their database. It simply reads it for a second and then continues as per normal. Even a win95 boot disk would probably do. It is 100% legit!!! If you have an existing OS it won't even prompt you. Anywho as quoted above you've probably missed the boat. |

Ok you have an operating system on your computer at the moment??? then just use the upgrade disk and it won't even ask you.why would you think that when I've said twice so far that I don't want an upgrade? I'm fixing a computer for a friend. There's no legitimate operating system available. There's nothing to upgrade from. You're assuming everyone on here is an a****** for some reason; your input is appreciated but dude, switch to decaf |

You don't have a win98 disk or anything else for that matter?
You think it's not legit because it's cheap? It's cheap because of vista...that is all 6-9 Months ago XP pro upgrade cost damn near $400. Why would you buy upgrade when you can get the OEM for $230? Now there is too much stock of upgrade and they needed to offload b4 vista. At the end of the day it's all just marketting BS , Academic versions, upgrade versions, OEM versions etc etc it's all the same s*** just smells slightly different. |

2. do windows updates 3. wait for it to figure out it's dodgy 4. take MS up on their offer to buy XP at a discount price 5. ??? 6. profit! |

You don't have a win98 disk or anything else for that matter? No You think it's not legit because it's cheap? No, its not legit because the logic behind upgrading is that you have a legitimate version to upgrade FROM get resourcefull: there's 1000 guys here who would flick you a legit 98 cd to make this easy just cause of who you are and what you've done with your time here.I'm not exactly sure what you're saying here. As above, the "legit" part of using an upgrade requires that you have a legitimate licensed copy of what you're upgrading from. The entire point of Nathan's post was (I assume) if you're not going to upgrade via a legitimate path, then why would you bother acquiring the operating system legitimately in the first place. Yes, I know I can just borrow or use a random operating system disc to make the upgrade version work - but I don't want to do that. I just want a whole OS version that, if Microsoft come knocking, I can say "here's everything you need to see that I acquired your product legitimately" - which, at the end of the day, you should be able to do with your software if you care about doing things properly. |

Indeed; there's no such thing as half legitimate.
If you own a Windows XP upgrade and wish to legally use it, you need to supply it a disc of a previous windows version that you _own_. If you do not want to do this, why would you buy the upgrade in the first place? Using a "legitimate" Windows version that someone else owns as the upgrade-from disc is no more legal than downloading Windows XP ISOs with bittorrent. last edited by Nathan at 12:43:04 28/Feb/07 |

If Microsoft knock on your door just tell them that you threw the disc you upgraded from out because you don't need it anymore.
Done, legit. |

Just upgrade to Linux
LOL But seriously, just get the OEM version from Umart. It's legit as long as you buy RAM or something from them, any PC rebuild could do with more RAM surely. Alternatively just get a full version of XP Pro with SP2 $445 from Harris Technology Technically speaking your friend isn't supposed to use Academic version of the OS if he's longer student or not teaching staff AFAIK so if you really want to be 100% legit then get the non-academic version: From: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/proeula.mspx
