SHANE Warne is set to rock the cricket world by announcing his retirement from Test cricket.

The champion leg spinner, who is on the verge of taking his 700th test wicket, spoke to Cricket Australia's senior management last night and is expected to make an announcement on his future tomorrow.

Warne, the world's leading Test wicket taker, is tipped to retire after the fifth Ashes test in Sydney, which starts January 2. Glenn McGrath is also rumoured to be considering retirement after the Sydney Test.

P.S. i forget how to properly link that news thing so admin fix it pls.

man he'd be on like a million bucks a year.

As if not milk it for all it's worth

Then again, he's joining the commentary team which is the sweetest job in the world with massive dolsh.

Surely McGrath will keep going till the World Cup, it will be a shame to see them both go...but it's important that we start building a team with some youth so we don't have the same problems that occured when Marsh/Lillie and Thomson all retired.

Considering the health of his wife I can understand why McGrath would leave the game

As for Warnie, well can't say I like him as a person but he is obviously good for our side

You would assume that at least one of them would go, as there is not much point in carrying on - they've achieved everything now. It would be purely for selfish reasons to keep going. They are both still taking wickets, so I would have no issues if they did stick around - so long as they maintained their form.

I would also think that Langer would look at departing as well. Hayden sounds like he wants to go to the World Cup so he will probably stick around a bit longer.

Perhaps next year the test team could look like this:

Jacques
Hayden
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
Cosgrove
Gilchrist/Haddin
Lee
Clark
Johnson
Macgill/Cullen

So why bother wasting your time posting in a clearly marked cricket related thread?

700 wickets...sweet jesus, whether you like the man himself or not that is one f***ing amazing achievement...especially for someone who had to take a year off!

clark is shaping up to be a really good bowler, very similar to mcgrath which is pretty cool and weird at the same time

Gilchrist/Haddin

i'm pretty sure in the 4 innings he has to bowl left, he'll get atleast 1 wicket..

Even though it's totally unlikely that he won't get at least 1 wicket, I don't think that's Warney's main concern...I think he really just wanted the Ashes back badly.

he'd be unconcerned because he knows he'll get it

He's playing England remember, I don't think 1 wicket will be a problem...

Paveway - I could see Gilly retiring after the World Cup. Just can't imagine he would have much to keep going for either, as he is 35. And when you boil it down, he has essentially had one good innings in recent times where there was not much pressure on him to make a big score.

Again, I would love for him to stay on as well as he is the best keeper-batsman we have ever seen (although I think Sangakarra may overtake him eventually). And he may stay, hence why I only put the Haddin option :)

I hope warnie doesn't retire, he is still firing.

McGrath hasn't been near his best for a while (IMO) and he is lucky to pick up the odd wicket - if he goes it doesn't leave as big a hole as warnie, mainly because we have a few 'decent' bowlers around the traps that could replace him - NOTE i am NOT saying they will be anywhere near as good as McGrath.

We don't have any good leg spinning options once warne goes, mcgill is just as old as warnie... dan cullen is ok, cameron white is ok, but no shane warne...

f*** between them they have over 1250 TEST WICKETS

f*** that is alot of experience to lose :(

Warne is a cainer! Both in person (for anyone that's met him) and as a cricket player.

This sucks.

Well it's official, good on him...hope he picks up a whole bunch of wickets in the next two tests leading to a 5-0 whitewash, would be the biggest high to go out on.

yeap, sad day.

But good luck to him I suppose, it's not like he hasn't served aus well over the years.

Notice he is still going to play his country cricket - the remaining 2 years of his contract, I bet its worth an arseload of coin to him....

ask you mum to buy you a warne doll.

also I've just ponied up for a warne signed test shirt, $2500 big ones, but it'll be a collectors item I rekon.

6-8 week delivery time, so it won't even be there when I go hom in Jan :( Wouldn't have minded seeing it :/

I just like the description that goes with the clip....

The great man bowling the greatest ball of the century to take Mike Gatting's wicket. He also allegedly slept with Gatting's girlfriend after the game - though I possibly made that up.

That's a shame too, oh well...plenty of time to form Clark into even more of a McGrath than he is now :p (which means you have to sledge stuart!!!)

yeah Langer's gawn... bring on jaques - he'll cain it up.

I'd say haydo's will hang around for a year or so, so we have *some* experience in terms of a test match opener

Screw the next Ashes - India/Sri Lanka on the sub continent are the next things they need to work towards.
