The CPL have announced they're going to be making a game specifically for multiplayer competitive action:
Severity is a multiplayer first person shooter (FPS) focusing on team-versus-team and one-versus-one play modes. Additionally, the game offers unprecedented support for gamers worldwide playing in online and live competitions both casually and professionally.

"Severity will be the first videogame conceived from the ground up to ensure the growth and appeal of multiplayer game competitions worldwide," said Tom Mustaine, Director of Game Development at the CPL's new studio.
The CPL of course have traditionally had to focus on the mass-market games out there to attract sponsors (Counter-Strike being the main drawcard), despite their near-total lack of decent competition functionality (when compared to modifications such as OSP for Quake 3 engine games). It will certainly be interesting to see how this one shapes up, especially if they go down the 'free game' path to increase appeal across the board.

Update: FiringSquad have more. Quake 3 engine confirmed, baby.

In the past when licensees paid for access to id's latest game, they also got access to the 'current' technology as well. Hence you saw Half-life built from pieces of both Quake and Quake 2 (during its development).

Not sure what the deal is now since their licensing page hasn't been updated in a while.

I just hope it isn't gay; like counter strike.

I guess this will depend if they want to make a bleeding edge commercial game, or if they want to use the GPL-ed engines like Quake 3 and make a nice, free, accessible, open source game.

I am massively excited about this if it's the latter, because I can't imagine anything neater than a Quake 3 engine-based action game that is open source and free to all. It might steal the impetus of gaming from mp5-based tac shooters back to hardcore fast paced skilled-based action games. Maybe.

Yeh could be good, most likely not though. I hope they keep it simple and fast.

They shouldn't make it free though. Make it like 20bucks and everyone will still buy it even if it sucks and they'll make some moolah back on it that they can use to keep updating it etc.

Difference between free and $20 is pretty much nothing for anyone who can afford to have a computer and internet anyway.

There have been some non gay games since Quake. DoD was pretty fun.

I’m sure poofters think that sucking on a hairy sweaty cock is ‘still dam fun’ even after years of getting men off. It’s still gay, and thus wrong.

How do companies that "go down the 'free game' path" make money???

In that firingsquad article it talks about CPL looking for publishers for the game, so i'd say it won't be free

CPL is a unique case really because they're not 'game developers' first and foremost - they organise competitions around gaming. So if they dropped some cash into a free game, made it great and popular, they would be able to attract massively fat revenue in terms of sponsorship for their competitions. Riding on the popularity of CS is how many organisations (QGL included) managed to provide game services and generate revenue.

The other alternative is advertising, which I suspect will become more prominent as time goes on. Again, making a game that's massively popular will generate $$$ in ad revenue. I'd happily cop a few in-game ads for a decent free FPS.

I made this call even before I stopped playing CS in lan competitions. They needed a "pro-mode" version of the game stripped of randomly generated recoil and fast-paced round timers among other things.

Hopefully this game they have in mind will be one that makes room for individual skill as well as comprehensive team-based tactics and fast paced gameplay so it is enjoyable for spectators. I suspect CPL will have them in mind equally or perhaps even moreso than the gamers themselves.

Creating an FPS geared towards competitions and tournaments is something I'm very suprised didn't pop up at least four years ago. Hopefully it isn't a fizzer.

Im surprised Counter Strike could even be considered a "competative game"

teamwork
aim
positioning
tactics

yeah I can see what you mean..... no competitive aspects there...

But getting back to Q3. Least we mention rocket jumping, plasma climbing and ramp sliding which isn't included in Counter Strike. There is your competative gaming.

ok so for starters u cant ramp slide in Q3.. secondly the things you listed have nothing to do with competition.. they are tricks.. mearly elements of the skill involved in the game.

typical jaded QGL forum CS hater. Don't worry, Quake is a near perfect game and I wish it were Quake instead of CS... but dont try to tell us CS doesn't have competitive aspects and isin't justified in its current position just cause you got headshoted a couple times by some some 13 year old wanker who told you your mum was a slag.

p.s I dont really see how they could choose the doom3 engine over the Q3 engine. as the doom engine is a pos by comparison.

p.p.s sup elih and nevl0r long time :)

I dunno if this will pick up, the only thing that looks even close to taking over cs is cs:source.
I couldnt really care if its get picked up anyway, as long as its fun and fast paced.
