Currently doing my QTAC application, and looking at bond university. Do they only have the one campus at the gold coast? or is there one in the city as well? i looked on the website but couldn't find anything.

hehe my mate got an OP18
But his grandfather died and left some cash. Paid something like $50,000 for a 2 year IT degree, they accepted him no probs. If you have cash, you can buy into any course you want.. That said, he dropped out in the first year haha. |

They think they are spesh now. Its easy to be stupid when you have money. |

To put things in perspective, this is approximately how much o/seas students paid to study here
http://www.studyinaustralia.gov.au/Sia/en/StudyCosts/TuitionFees Bonds' fees are about on par with full paying students. No wonder those o/seas students studied so hard when they're here. last edited by Opec at 13:35:31 26/Sep/06 |

OK I'm old, we had TE scores so whats an OP18, is that like dumb as dog s***, and which is better higher or lower?
I have mates who teach at UNI, some of the s*** they have to put up with OS students and their "FULL" paying. One failed a student cause he had no idea what they where saying or writing and got shafted, he told dean/facilty that it was the students responsibility to communicate their understanding of the knowledge to him in order to evaluate them, they didn't so they failed. The student in question was evaluated by an "INDEPENDANT" advisory and given a pass, like my mate says "how the f*** are they suposed to learn anything if they can't communicate effectively! So now they have dual language lecturers, only f***en problem is English is their second language, how the f*** do they communicate with US!" then he usually rambles on in incoherant bursts of profanity before declaring "if it wasn't for 12 weeks paid f***en holidays they would kiss my hairy ass!". If you think I have a good recolection of this event, no not really I usually get a replay every few months when we have a BBQ... |

Obviously your mate seems to have a good grasp of the English language himself. LOL. Seriously tho, yeah that's pretty sad how that student get away with it. However, I can only speak from my own experience, and the OS students that I've dealt with in group assigments did study very hard. Unlike me heh. |

Look I'm not saying he has anyting against them, its just this one incident he goes on and on about after a few, where the UNI took s***loads of money from this student who basically need an interrupter. Most of his "FULL" paying students can speak and write english just as well as his OZ students, which as he puts it, "the F7 generation!". f***ing ARTS teacher... but bourbon is a real equalizer in the language stacks... ;)

Gumby, dunno what a TE score is.
But OP = Overall Position in state. 1 = Best, 25 = Worst. So an 18 is very crappy. Most Uni degrees need under a 10. |

TE = Tertiary Enterance score 990 was highest then went down from there under 800 was bad, used in the 80's.

My friend is currently studying speech pathology at UQ at the moment.
Now let me just clarify : SPEECH PATHOLOGY. 70% of her class (although it be a smaller group compared to other degrees) are OS students that can't speak english properly. Now, can anyone else see a problem with this? Apparently the course is hard enough without everything being reiterated and confused by the fact that most of the class dont even have english down pat let alone the finer points of language and linguistics. Same kinda scenario GumbyNoTalent brought up, they arent getting the basics and shouldnt be passing...but....are..... |

I think with TE the range was 500 - 990 ? So proportionality, perhaps an 18 is 650? nfi.
But, I think Bond, while it's easier, for rich peeps, stupid folk (whatever, insert stigma here) doesn't need to be as demanding as other unis. Why? Cos if I'm going to Bond Uni, it's likely my parents rich, own successful businesses and/or influence into a wide range of related industries. I wouldn't need to claw my way up from graduation, when I could probably land a good cushy higher-level 'introductory' job where technical competence in my chosen field isn't as important, I could leverage my soft non-tangible family connections and relationships, which is more a part of business than uni skills btw, not bond |

my old man was a professor & associate dean in the school of economics @ bond before he moved into the private sector and most of the academic staff in that school are world class - wouldn't know about the others though. sure it's expensive but you get awesome student to teacher ratios, staff who care about teaching (not like half the c***s at uq from my experience, f***ing over 1000 students in 1st year subjects is just s***) and awesome facilities. plus if you want you can do 3 semesters a year and finish a 3 year degree in 2.
so yeah, i didn't go there cause i didn't want to pay that much but it's a pretty good uni. edit: or at least it was 10-15 yrs ago last edited by taggs at 15:30:34 26/Sep/06 |

Thanks for the heads up. I'm looking at doing primary education. My first preference is A.C.U. But last years OP cut off was 11. And my OP prediction is 11 - 15. So not to sure if I will get into that. Otherwise I'll study elsewhere for a year, and then change to A.C.U.

depending what you study Bond has a very good reputation, and you can also complete your degree quicker if you are prepared to work hard. Contrary to popular belief, you can;t buy a degree there, you still need to pass.

It's really not hard to pass the criteria for medicine (5.0 GPA in previous degree)... so the deciding factor is the GAMSAT and interview... which people that get into the regular medical schools would absolutely own.
So provided there little boy/girl gets a 5.0 (which is bulls*** easy), they can pay $230k for them to study medicine. last edited by CHUB at 22:40:49 26/Sep/06 |

you can get in anywhere regardless of your background or schooling if you have the money and ive spent enough money to realise that if you didnt work your ass off to get there/bought your way in then you dont deserve to be there and you will probably fail/wont exceed as well as the people that have honestly work hard to be there.

Basically, you couldn’t get into TAFE with that kind of grade, unless they thought you where handicapped. To the OP, if the best you can get is an OP of 18, just don’t bother; unless you are a tardmonkey (TIMMAAAHH). You’re going to get owned in first year because you’re a lazy and incompetent slug. Go learn how to cook fries or something. |

I think it's pretty much slackness... unless you're in the "special class"/voc ed, you're capable of a decent OP.
There were people in my grade that were absolutely s*** for brains (would of been told to go voc), but with heaps of hard work they got an OP 10. Then there was average students, that worked there asses off and got OP 2. |

Well that's what I would have thought, apparently the GPA doesn't come into question at all (whether you get a 5, 6.5 or 7)... so they give 50% weighting to the GAMSAT, 50% to the interview. I didn't say it's hard in itself, but your competition would be.

i had a mate that was near the top of the GAMSAT results but went very poorly in the interview and didn't get in.
I also know a chick that scraped through GAMSAT and did get in after the interview. It also hels if you go to St. Johns college, their senior master has the final say on who gets in and who doesn't. Coincidentally, the guy that smashed GAMSAT and didn't pass the interview went to Kings and regularly kicked St. johns arse on the sporting field. Thats a big price to pay for being a jock. |

Getting a GPA of 5 is not a problem for most people interested in doing medicine. GAMSAT and the interview are by no means easy, and as Spidz said, doing well in one doesn't necessarily mean you will do well in the other.

As long as you 'pass' GAMSAT you can get in, have a bad interview and its all over red rover, no matter how good your GAMSAT score is. Having spent a bit of time with Doctors lately, I agree with this system. |

I go to Bond, (I'm in my last semester studying IT) so I'll try give you some info about the place.
Academic stuff: - Class sizes are really small, especially in IT and higher level subjects. This semester, all my subjects have 6 people or less so you do get a lot of individual attention if you want it. I generally think this is a good thing, especially in the difficult subjects where you can get help grasping concepts easily instead of falling behind. - The lecturers know their s***, and are usually very open and friendly. - One bad thing (this is to do with IT, not sure about other areas) is due to the small number of students, there isn't a massive range of subjects like other larger uni's. For example, Bond doesn't have a lot of low level programming courses, or subjects dealing with oddball languages. However, I've found that the subjects they do offer tend to be run very well and lecturers are usually mroe than happy to point you in the direction of some good material if you are interested in a particular subject. - You finish quicker. We do 3 semesters a year (each 14 weeks, including exams) so you do a 3 year course in 2 years. You don't really work any harder, you just dont have the huge 3 month break over Christmas that UQ, etc get (we get 3 weeks). - Contrary to popular belief, you do need to work to pass subjects. I know plenty of people who fail and if you are on a scholarship you need to maintain >75% or you get booted. A lot of people who did poorly at school do alright at Bond, I think due to the small classes and individual assistance. - It is expensive (I got a scholarship so I don't really know a lot about this) but I believe it is on par with full fee paying courses at any other university, and Bond offers heaps of scholarships with varying amounts of discounts, so apply for them all and you might get lucky. Social Stuff: - Generally, at least 50% of students on campus are from another country, with a mixture of Asian, Middle-Eastern and European students. In semesters 1 and 3, the place seems to be taken over by a huge amount of American exchange students, who all take piss easy subjects and party all the time. - Due to the influx of said Americans, all the uni events (there is usally at least one each week) are generally fantastic with huge crowds of drunk Americans out to have a good time. They can get a little bit irritating, but all is usually forgotten when you see how hot the girls are. - You get really good deals with all the nightclubs on the coast for being a Bond student (free entry, half price drinks, etc) which is always good - There are heaps of clubs/societies/student associations you can get involved in if you like. My Thoughts about the place: I've had a great time at Bond, managed to do well and have my dream job lined up for next year. I was wary of the negative comments people had given the place and was a little unsure about how it would turn out, but in the end all the rumours were false and I've been impressed. The lecturers are top notch, subjects are relevant and updated frequently, the facilities are good and socially it's a blast. You'll meet a heap of new people from heaps of different places and getting done in 2 years is a plus. One thing I noticed during interviews for jobs was that employers seemed to be impressed with all the group projects you do, and that you can handle yourself when you are forced to work with people from different cultural backgrounds and varying levels of english. Having to work in groups with people like this can drive some people insane, (I know I've been frustrated at times) however it has certainly given me a variety of skills that are useful and impressive to potential employers. Sorry for the length, but I hope that was some help and if you have any specific questions, fire away. Hit up the Bond website and look at the faculty websites - you can look at subject outlines, etc and see if the academic side of things looks like what you want which may help your decision. Good luck with it all! Dom |
