I love my laptop, ^ gaming sucks on mine because the keyboard cache or whatever can only handle 2 keystrokes meaning i cant stafe walkforward and jump at the same time, but its no biggie, just need a usb keyboard.
Plays wow awesome! |

I got an intel centrino 2.0 gig, 1gig ram, 100gig hdd, 128 intel video for around 2k in January this year, but that was from a friend at mates rates - so that looks semi-decent.

FWIW, my 2c: never buy laptops unless portability is your major requirement for a computer.

I too am in the market after the debacle that I had with my laptop my wife gave me for my birthday. Not her fault, but she did buy it from Harveys...
I had a look at a Dell and was able to put together something similar to the above with the uber dual core 2gig 4mb cache processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T7200 2GHz, 4MB Cache, 667 MHz FSB Base Assembly Operating System Genuine Windows(R) XP Professional (English) 1 Limited Time Offer (For Online Orders Only) Free upgrade from 80GB to 120GB hard drive Limited Time Offer 1 (For Online Orders Only) Free Wireless DSL/Cable Gateway Router Limited Time Offer 2 (For Online Orders Only) Free Delivery Limited Time Offer 1 Free upgrade from 512MB to 1024MB memory Display 14.1" WXGA+ Ultrasharp(TM) TFT Display with TrueLife(TM) ( 1440 X 900 res) Memory 1024MB (2 X 512MB) DDR2 SDRAM Audio Solution Integrated Stereo Sound SATA Hard Drives 120GB SATA Hard Drive Internal Optical Drive Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Combination Drive with dual layer write capabilities etc etc.. The final price for that was 2,072.40 including GST. And I'd agree with Trog on the portability thing. I can't understand these huge laptops that have 17"+ screens and weigh a ton. The whole point is so you can whip it out in a coffee shop, look something up on the interwebs, take some notes, show a client something etc etc... Most of the big laptops wouldn't even fit on a coffee shop table :) |

I recently changed from my 15" Dell inspiron 6000 to the Dell XPS 12".
Specs are 2ghz dual core, 2gig of ram, 256meg 7600GT , 120gig drive. Gaming is just fine on it ;P I also LOVE the size of it compared to the 15". Its easy to type on, screen size isnt an issue and its nice and light. I dont think I could go back to a bigger laptop. The only down side is it was $3000 or so, but I think you can get cheaper with lower specs. |

only reason i would possibly want a laptop is for wireless internet while watching tv or while doing something else..
gaming or working or doing anything that required a proper program I would always rather be sitting down on a proper chair/desk anyway, so why settle for a laptop? laptops are good for internet browsing and word processing... that's it! |

laptops are good for internet browsing and word processing... that's it! I use my work laptop (bigarse Dell XPS M1710, see specs above but with a 19" screen) for everything from gaming to compiling code. I'm extremely happy wiith it, but I admit probably wouldn't have gotten it if I was paying for it ($5,500+ price tag). Its nice being able to do stuff like play Oblivion when I'm interstate ;) |
