my neighbour is a card dealer, i think he went through a 6 week course (mandatory) to learn everything he needed ... he didn't get paid for that training, but apparently after his group they were going to start paying, so not sure what's the go now
either way, it's not that long, just make sure you have another income or don't need money while you're doing the training |

that's so treasury!
$400 for 4 weeks of 7am-3.30pm training, $345 for license fee start at about $17-18 for first 3 months probation $24ish after that. 15 min break every hour (minimum) laundry done on site, 2 free meals per shift from the staff restaurant per shift. expect to work nights for at least a few months during your first 6 months there start off with just blackjack, generally progress through treasury 21, caribbean stud, texas holdem, baccarat/roullette |

I'd love to be a blackjack dealer, but I heard you can't go into the casino at all outside of your work hours if you're an employee. Any truth to this? If so that sucks ><

youre not allowed to gamble (because of licensing and general professionalism), but you can go (i think 12 times a year) to the bars etc. also can't gamble at gold coast, sydney or townsville casinos (tabcorp)

My sister was a croupier at Brisbane for almost 2 years. She thought it started out great but after a while it got so boring and monotonous. She did seem to enjoy the private high roller rooms as it is a more relaxed atmosphere and the tips were considerable. That said, she admitted she would never want to work i na casino again.

it's really never done, all the dealers know the rules, our pants don't have pockets nor is there any real way to give a dealer a tip - there's only really the float where the casino's money is and even if you gave us some chips as appreciation we can't exactly take them to the cashier and get the cash or anything like that, and it'd look ridiculous too
when the americans aboard that massive plane carrier thing (uss ronald reagan or whatever) came they all tried to tip, but we couldn't accept dunno why this post is so long, but back when kerry packer used to gamble there he tried to give a pregnant dealer a 100k tip as she was quitting soon (you could technically quit and accept a tip) but she declined |

if you get accepted into the training school and aren't a complete retard who lacks motor skills/politeness then you're pretty much guaranteed a job
it's basically group interview -> invididual interview -> training school -> job youre pretty much guaranteed 8 hours per shift, you aren't really given a finish time, it's like "start at midday, probably finish at 8" but the "start at 8pm, maybe finish at 4am, maybe at 6am, maybe 7 if you want to stay on longer" sux |

in the best case scenario it shouldn't happen, but sometimes it's unavoidable. i'm not sure if it's a license losing offence, but if you're doing it secretively and you're obviously up to no good it might be written warning worthy

Dealer do you deal at Jupiters?
I'm usually on Floor 7 (Club Conrad) on a sunday night, playing Blackjack with a few other punters. Also to the op; from my experience chatting with various croupiers the ones who do this for a living usually do a stint in a casino for a few years, building up there resume and contacts, then go work with P&O or another cruise ship company for a 12 month contract. The good thing about dealing on a cruise ship is that you can accept tips and everything is tax free due to international waters, they can make a pretty penny if you're having a good night and someone decides to give you a big tip. |

nah i'm at treasury parag0n
that's the basic reason why so many staff leave so often - the casino here can't (and doesn't really want to) compete with what the cruise ships etc can offer yeh lurikeen even casual = 30-38hour week pretty much guaranteed (but also phat lewt guaranteed) |

Sounds interesting. So does the Treasury tend to hire all year round or instead hire a big batch of people several times a year?
Should I walk in off the street and leave my resume or do they advertise positions in the paper/internet? |

That business about losing job if you take a tip ect.. is in a lot of Casinos around the world.
In fact one of the best stories about the late great Kerry Packer was once when he was in a Las Vegas Casino playing blackjack he asked the lady dealer what one of her goals in life was. She replied to pay off her house. He asked how much she needed to pay off her house and it was like $80K US, so he hands her the amount in chips. She tellss him she cant accept it because of the house rules. So Kerry gets the manager to the table and confirm this fact, which he does, Kerry then tells the manager that if he doesnt sack the dealer on the spot he will never gamble there again. So the manager sacks the girl on the spot, Kerry gives her the $80 grand in chips and then he tells the manager that if he doesnt re-hire the girl again he will never gamble in his casino again. So the manager has to rehire the girl onthe spot and everyones a winner. Awesome and completely true verified story. last edited by Psycho! at 11:30:15 25/Aug/06 last edited by Psycho! at 11:30:55 25/Aug/06 |

Hahaha But gary, youre only 16 That's what your mother said right before I rubbed one off on her forehead. Glad to see you're still the same worthless scrub as always Astrofag. ---Also to those interested in Kerry Packer stories, particulary when it comes to gambling, head down to your bookstore and grab a copy of his Biography written by Bob Stupak, my particular favourites are the Texan and the Cocktail Waitress stories. Good read about a fairly eccentric man. Another good read if you can find it was a journal posted by a Baccarat dealer from the Endeavour room, talking about Kerry needing a 25 million dollar line of credit, when the manager refused he went back to PBL and started aquiring the gaming licenses relevant for a hostile takeover. last edited by Parag0n at 17:59:44 25/Aug/06 |

heh, i heard a good story about kerry packer gambling.
apparently kerry was in a high roller room in some casino in las vegas where he was happily gambling away. then an american with a southern accent strolls in and starts gambling. the american is really loud and after a few dark looks by kerry still won't quiet down. so kerry walks over and asks him to not make such a ruckus. the american stands up and says, "son do you know who i am, i'm worth $100 million!" Kerry looks at him and says "i'll flip you for it." apparently the guy shut right up after that. |

Sorry to revive an old thread but i was interested in being a dealer and found this thread through search, i found the info in the thread really useful and after doing the interviews i wanna add a bit more so in future it might help someone else like it did for me when i applied.
If you get shortlisted for interviews, starts off with group interviews in the training room (a loft above conrad hotel full of blackjack tables), basically going around in circles and introducing yourself etc, followed by 2 maths tests, and more speaking activities. Then theres individual 2 on 1 interviews if you manage to progress (2 of them taking turns interviewing you). Basically your experience with customer service and situational type questions to see how you would answer it, followed by a brief medical examination. They do actually ring your references to check history. If your successful you have to fill out this crazy casino employee license app booklet and have yet another interview with the qld gaming board.. After that it's pretty much smooth sailing. Updates are: starting salary is now $19.19 followed by $24.83ish after the 3 month probation and you are no longer paid for the training school. They do offer jobs for uni students (weekend only) and you can nominate any other times your free to work but its first come first served in regards to the uni students, i think they only offer it at the beginning of the year. I hope i get through :( last edited by Resonate at 18:30:46 16/Jan/07 |

I haven't played at NL Hold Em, because obviously I'm a poor ass.
Though the limit tables are extremely easy to win on the majority of the times, a lot of dips***s. |

What are the range of blinds they have at the treasury? CBF going myself to check.
I wanna try my hand at some live play, but not if the lowest max buyin they have at a NL table is like $500 or something. I usually play the $50US max buyins online, and usually try to have at least 10-15x the max buying before playing at that stake. And also do they have any poker tournaments (holdem/stud/omaha, doesn't really matter), and if so, whats the typical buy in amounts / number of players? |

There's no tournaments of any kind (there was one celebrity one a long time ago)
your optinos are pretty much limit (5/10 or 10/20 for smallbet/bigbet (blinds are therefore 2.50/5 or 5/10), the pots average about 100-150$ for the 5/10 and probably between $100 and $400 for 10/20. There's no No Limit action at all, but there's $5/$10 blind halfpot limit. Which is essentially you can raise between $10 and whatever half the pot is and any bets made in that round: example: on the turn the pot is $100, two people before you have bet and called another $20 and you wanna raise, you can bet (in total) between $40 and $90, then the next person can bet between $180 and $250 (in total, provided you bet your maximum $90) so obviously the pots get pretty big if there's two people with big hands ($1-2k pots are common, there's the occasional $10k+ pot). Also holdem is the only game they spread. |

No Limit holdem in not permitted under queensland law in casinos. It is some archaic law about unlimited raising and until it is repealed by the Qld Government (the owners of the casino ffs) there will only be Limit HE, and Half & Full Pot Limit HE. Which is rediculous because Full Pot HE pots are frequently larger than NL pots.
There used to be a Full Pot Limit game on Sundays upstairs, but then I think they moved that table downstairs and it can now get played when there is enough interest. I think the previous poster didn't fully explain the betting options in his example... In a $5/10 half pot limit game, the pot is $100, it is 3 handed, and the turn cards has just been dealt. Player 1 bets $20, Player 2 calls $20 and the action is on you. The pot is now $140. The most you can raise $80 more ie "$100 to go." But $80 is more than half the pot! i hear you say. Well, after you match the initial bet of $20 the *new* pot becomes $160 (100+20+20+20) so you can raise the minimum and be a fag ($20 more to $40), raise the maximum of $80 (a raise *to* $100) or anywhere in between. If it was full pot limit, after matching the $20 bet and bringing the pot to $160, you can now raise $160 *more* ie raise *to* $320. You can see how quickly pots can build, as the original $20 bettor can now re-raise you to $1240 (300 more to match your 320 raise, bringing the new pot to 620, followed by a 620 pot sized raise). So sitting down with 15-20k now makes a lot more sense even in a $5/10 game. |

Packer is famously quoted for an exchange in a poker tournament at the Stratosphere Casino, where a Texan oil investor was attempting to engage him in a game of poker. Upon the Texan saying "I'm worth $60,000,000!" Packer apparently pulled out a coin and asked nonchalantly, "heads or tails?",referring to a $100,000,000 wager(according to Bob Stupak's biography). Some variations of the story put the sum at $60-100,000,000 and claim the line was "I'll flip ya for it", that Bob Stupak and others at the Casino claim to have witnessed.from wiki wiki |

Ya. But 'the full pot' is defined as "including all present bets & calls" so you need to match/call the $20 bet by Player A, and include Player B's $20 call, bringing the pot to $160 (100+20+20+20) and then you can raise the size of the new (amended) pot ($160) in addition, making it $320 total.
Also, in No Limit it is common for the action to end before the river card is dealt. Most pots will be taken down on the flop or turn. In addition, because your entire stack is in jeopardy, play tends to be more cautious, unlike 1/2 & Pot Limit where all 5 cards are seen multi-way, increasing the pot dramatically. It is for these reasons that not allowing NL HE is retarded IMHO. I mean, there is no limit to the amount of money you can keep throwing on the roulette wheel, blackjack or the pokies... |

you made it sound like you were raising to $320 (i.e. your bet was $320 total) not the whole pot being 320, which is a pretty irrelevant figure mid round
