Topic: CPL Sticks with Quake 3

The CPL have announced that they're sticking with Quake 3 for their 1v1 tournament:
This decision should not be regarded as critical towards id software or Raven, but should be considered a compliment of how well Quake 3 has withstood the test of time. The CPL will continue to provide feedback to id software on Quake 4, to help improve its tournament features until such point as the community feels that the game has the necessary features to replace Quake 3.
While it might be disappointing for some that Quake 4 (or some other title) wasn't picked, it is good to see the CPL making a decision to stick with a tried and tested title, rather than getting sucked into picking a less mature title just because it is newer or prettier.

that didn't stop them from making quakeworld and quake2. I guess what they _have_ nailed home with the sequels is that it's all too easy to go backwards from perfection

CPMA 2v2TDM FTW :D

But yes, well done CPL. Not caving to pressure and deciding to use the newest around just for the sake of it.

The CPL have always tried to make things good for spectators (which is good), but Quake 3 will give them a great opportunity since the source is available, and they can eyecandy it up as much as they want.

Yep this is the best thing the CPL have ever done, in my opinion.

I think using Counter-Strike was a real step backwards for competitive gaming - but I guess it was the only thing they could do, because they needed the vast numbers of players to really drive it. We of course did the same thing with QGLs by focusing our competitions on CS for the exact same reasons so I can't be too critical - but I always would have preferred to be running Quake comps, because a) it's just better software and b) I think it is much better to watch from a spectators point of view.

Quake 2 CTF was perfection.

hey whoop, you going to join us in Delta CTF? it's just like the old q2ctf style of play ... good fun to be had (as soon as good maps are made and a few other things are fixed, it's still in beta after all)

solid game that still doesnt require a nasa computer to run it.

Back at the first Big Day In, I was running it on a PII-350 with a Riva 128, and 128MB of RAM, getting acceptable performance. Look how far stuff has come since then though. It's got just the right blend of eyecandy and performance yet still relies on the gameplay to make it good.
