Yeah a firework is a great description of it... except it was way too massive and too fast too be anything like that for my eyes... I'm going with meteor... that was crazy! Biggest I've seen!

Apparently it can be deceptive how close meteors are. My grandma saw one once and she said it looked like it was about as high as a plane about to land, and could feel the heat generated by it on her face but it landed hundreds of kilometeres away.

The colour it burns depends on what it's made up of.

a lot of meteors leave green tails it has something to do with the ionisation of atomic oxygen at high altitudes behind a very very fast moving meteor.

possibly it was a fragment or tail particle of a comet... comet schwassmann-wachmann 3 is rapidly breaking up & on it's closest approach to earth right now... but that is 10million kilometers so perhaps not. :P
