According to SMH the Attorney General will announce 'sweeping changes' to copyright laws today (on mothersday??)

Police will be able to issue on-the-spot fines and access and recover profits made by copyright pirates. Courts will be given extra powers to award larger damages payouts against internet pirates. Civil infringement proceedings will apply to copyright pirates who make electronic reproductions or copies of copyright material.

The article also claims that 'the Government is giving police greater powers to tackle internet piracy, signalling the days of downloading music from the internet danger-free may be limited.'

The good news is that all of you that were breaking the law by timeshifting or format shifting will no longer be breaking the law, but you still won't be able to download your MP3s from the net, you'll need to convert them yourself (from what i can make of this fluff piece anyway).

News.com.au has the same story too.

They still will only be going for the Mr Bigs. At least they are getting a bit real with the whole recording tv programs thing.

I think this is the only case of users saying "pick me, pick me" when it comes to piracy?

Shouldn't they be punishing pirates who break laws with "on the spot fines" not giving them incentive to do so with "on the spot files"? Especially if those on the spot files are good ones.

I would copy all of the above, if I could. Such a silly campaign.
