I thought I would get in with the E3 thread before anyone else :P It looks like things have already started with Square/Enix press conference. The Sony Press Conference is in about 35 minutes.

Square-Enix announced a heap of Final Fantasy stuff (odd that), Gamespot has some good coverage. Big things there include Final Fantasy XIII for the PS3. Dragon Quest for the Wii, Crystal Chronicles for the Wii and DS as well as more FF remakes for the GBA.

We got back from the Activision conference - for some reason we didn't get an invite to the Square thing, maybe we are too poverty. Activision had a few things on show but all info is embargoed until 9am Wed morning PST, so you'll have to stay tuned.

PS, LA sucks.

Hurrah! I got a sticky thread!!

I kept flicking over to the Playstation Press Conference while trying to fix people at work, everytime I did flip over I saw a bloody car game! ugh!

One thing I did notice that Sony is trying is the whole connectivity idea beteween the PSP and the PS3. The game they (Sony) showed had a car racing on the screen, and the PSP at the side mirror. Nintendo did this with the GBA/GCN rather unsuccessfully, I wonder if Sony will be more successful?

I'm waiting for the Nintendo Press Conference tomorrow, I believe it's on 2:30am our time, so I'll probably be really really sad and be awake for that.

Wow...Sony kinda copied the Wii Controller

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced the new controller for PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3), which will become available as standard with the system. The new controller can be experienced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) held from May 10 through 12, 2006, in Los Angeles, California.

The controller for PS3 has been created by refining and improving the world's most popular PlayStation controller that has shipped more than several hundred million units worldwide, while inheriting its basic concept and design. The controller for PS3 employs breakthrough technology of high-precision, highly sensitive six-axis sensing system that does not require any devices other than the controller itself for seamless interactive operation, thus eliminating additional settings to TVs. With this technology, ways to enjoy PS3 will be further enhanced by accessing PS3 through the network, while retaining the six-axis sensing capability.

In addition to the "3-posture-axis" of roll, pitch and yaw, "3-dimension acceleration information (X, Y, and Z)" can be detected in high-precision and in real-time. In addition to standard key input available in existing controllers, more natural and more intuitive play will become possible as if the controller has become part of your body.

Pursuant to the introduction of this new six-axis sensing system, the vibration feature that is currently available on DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2 controllers for PlayStation and PlayStation 2, will be removed from the new PS3 controller as vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor.

The shape of L2/R2 buttons located on the top of the controller has also been enlarged with increased depth in stroke for more subtle control in games. At the same time, the tilting angle of the analog joy sticks has been slightly broadened to enable more delicate and more dynamic manipulation. Along with these improvements, precision of above information detection (L2/R2, analog joy stick) has been increased from 8 bit to 10 bit.

All input information will be immediately transferred to the PS3 system through the Bluetooth wireless technology. By using a USB cable, the PS3 controller can be swapped seamlessly from wireless to wired, and can be charged automatically. The cable can be attached and detached at anytime.

By integrating all these features into one standard PlayStation controller, SCEI, together with content creators, expects to further expand and accelerate the world of next generation computer entertainment.

Gamepads with pitch/yaw are as old as time, but it's obvious Sony are trying to trump Nintendo here.

This is a f***ing awesome idea.

Edit: VVV Yeah, but this is Sony.

I seriously didn't know that

That's what Microsoft did with it's Xbox360 wireless controllers.

personally I find the vibration feature on any controller (joysticks not included) stupid and pointless. I mean - wow that pathetic vibration totally didn't capture what it's like to be beside an exploding mine etc etc.

Good riddance to bad rubbish imo.

I want my Wii!

Makes me glad I stayed up when I got home to watch the Big N's conference.. Was already excited about the Wii, but watching actual games in action (rather than "this is the Wii-mote. This is a tech demo") and seeing how the whole thing works was something entirely different.

Zelda: TP being played on it for example - using the Nunchuck to walk around & then using the WiiMote to swing the sword, aim Arrows & fish amongst other things.. Then later on watching Miyamoto + 3 others play a 4 player Doubles match on Wii Sports: Tennis - getting backhand, forehand, spin shots all by twisting and holding the Wiimote in different directions..
Got to see Red Steel being played as well - the guy running around using the Wiimote to aim/shoot, then using the Nunchuck to not only move, but open doors & other things (to open the door one simply "shakes" the Nunchuck, which is somewhat of an imitation of twisting a door handle.. Of course, they point out you can also run into the door hard and it'll have teh same effect).. Then getting into a Sword fight and again - twisting, slashing & stabbing with the Wiimote to strike, parry, block & attack etc..

Also showed off some footage of the new SMB game: Mario Galaxy.. Basically take Mario 64, throw it into space and make it heaps bigger with lots more interactivity. Metroid Prime3 looks pretty, whilst Sonic Wii (or whatever it'll end up being called) looks to be a return to the grounds of 3d fun but with the Wiimote featuring as a big part of it.. Was some footage of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Wii, but it was mostly pre-rendered stuff.. New properties - Red Steel being one, another called Project: HAMMER (which is a big robot "destroy everything" game..), then there's Disaster - seems like it drops you in the middle of several natural disasters (looks very cool indeed).

The DS stuff was pretty kickass too - The Lite obviously made up a big portion of the conference.. but also the games that are coming out - New SMB, Starfox DS, Pokemon (some rpg when you play as the pokemon!), the Brain Age games, some Touch-screen centric rythmn game, Diddykong Racing, Yoshi's Island 2, Final Fantasy 3 & the list went on...

Definantly glad I made the effort to stay awake when I got home to watch it

Oh - and Zelda: Twilight Princess is going to be released in dual format - The "normal" version for the GCN & an "enhanced" version for the Wii which takes full advantage of the Wii's unique features (ie the WiiMote etc). Was hints that the Wii's launch date being 2006..

And the big one?

Zelda will be a Wii Launch title.

don't go off at me nintendo fan-boys because i don't know a whole lot about this, but is there a chance that maybe this whole movement thing they're bringing in might be a bit too much all at once and could be annoying? i can think of alot of disadvantages, and what about for the fat lard nerds which are in abundance who want to play, they can't move their arms around that much, i guess if anything the exercise will be good for them.

Don't get me wrong i think it sounds like a sweet idea, i'm just trying to get my head around the functionality of it all i guess.

If you're talking about Final Fantasy Games being repetitive...
The only thing that really links the Final Fantasy games is the name, and that
they're RPGs.

The storyline is always new, deep and engaging.
The gameplay is generally different, sometimes radically different - compare FFX to FFX-2 to FFXII. They play totally differently.

My brother had a ps2, he had mgs whatever number it was, and he played it for about 2 weeks and then traded the whole lot in for an xbox. MGS was s***, boring, and stupid.

Is that good enough ? It's probably on par with your repetetive wow bashing posts.

I liked Metal Gear Solid because I like a storyline in my games. I think they get a bit carried away with MGS actually, and sometimes the storyline gets a bit too entangled in itself but it's still good none the less.

MGS isn't for everyone, it's a niche market as there are plently of people that don't want to sit through 20 minute cutscenes. Just because you don't like it though doesn't mean you can't appreciate that certain people with an appetite for well directed cutscenes and a deep, hard to follow storyline won't enjoy it.

Also, you can't knock MGS3/4 or whatever and then go on to talk about Halo. Halo one was good, Halo 2 is what Halo 1 would have been if it was released on the PC - as in it had multiplayer options! I'm sure Halo 3 will be great when it's released, but I'll be playing MGS4 as well thank you very much.

the consoles differ in more than just game selection, the 360 has great online features, the Wii's controller is tricked out to the extreme, and the ps3 is a ps2 with better graphics.

to the extreme, rock a Wii like a vandal

if that pic of the wii controler is real and not a mock up i gotta say i love it. looks like a snes controler with a dualshock style twin stick sorta thing. after seeing that the ps3 controler is the same style s*** they have been pumping out since the ps1 launch, that they just stole nintendos idea, and not to mention that the US launch price for the basic system set up is $500 (without any games, only 1 controler and no special cords for HDTVs) i gotta say nintendo wii is something im really looking foward to. lets hope wii has some good games at launch, and really looking foward to the new zelda

27 supposed (or probably near-launch) titles, including (and I'm just stipulating) twilight princess, mario galaxy, smash bros brawl, sports, warioware, their racing game and probably one of their underling's projects like H.A.M.M.E.R. - it's going to be a launch to remember if this comes through.

Snake in Smash Bros Brawl is almost orgasmic. Nintendo wins this e3, that's for sure.

Edit: oh yeah metroid at launch too

Oh, I hadn't heard about that, I was just going off the news that it'd be a launch title when it was talked about about a year ago

It brings tears to my eyes to hear you guys say Nintendo wins this year at e3. I mean I was gonna go buy the Wii anyway and go about my business being a fanboy for a year or two. But now I'll be surrounded by everyone else who wants to love metroid, SSBB, Zelda (zomg!) and everything else.

All without even factoring in that Wii can still download all the old school games such as the original Final Fantasy games on SNES, Mario Bros., Goldeneye, Kid Ikarus, the original Zeldas on NES that started it all...so stoked.

Thats s***. The game was delayed for the sole reason of adding Revolution controller compatability. I wonder whats going to happen with people who have already pre-ordered the game (like myself). I hope we get to choose from the Gamecube version and the Revolution version. They better have a kick ass pre-order package.

It would be great if they someone set up a system where if you own the original game you can download it for free. That would be fantastic.

I hate to disagree with everyone but I don't think Nintendo "won" out of the press conferences.

First off, if I'm a fanboy for any console it's Nintendo. I woke up at 2:30am to watch the bloody Wii conference for christs sake, but I think they had a s***ty conference.

NO price
NO release date
NO mention of online other than to say "you're connected constantly"
NO Super Smash Brothers (sure they showed this later)
They spent too long showing particular games (Red Steel & Tennis) but then ignored others like Metroid and Pilotwings - even bloody mario took a back seat to Tennis!

Zelda did look cool - but then I knew it would, it's Zelda.

I guess I'm probably disappointed because I was expecting more, and the thing is that I think Nintendo could have showed more of what we wanted to see - they just didn't.

Versus Sony's $600USD pricetag, disturbing uncanny valley face modelling systems, copycat controller that's exactly the same as the last two generations and Microsoft's absolute nothing?

Yeah, I think Nintendo might have won out here.

(I'm still excited about the ps3)

and maybe I'm on the wrong forum to be bagging out microsoft.

while nintendo has awesome s*** comming, microsoft win it for me.

successfully locking in themselves in the market place with there live anywhere feature.

for those who havent heard of it yet, you can access xbox live form your mobile xbox360 and pc, you can customise your race car on your pc, send a request to your friends mobile to play a game, then you can jump on your xbox360 with your car that you customised on your pc and play against your friend who is playing on there pc. to me that s***s on anything that sony has to offer and just shows that microsoft have the right idea in mind for cross platform gaming thus successfuly slotting themselves into the market place.

these are ideas i dreamed of and they are ideas i thought id only ever see implemented towards the end of my life.

i give made props to microsoft and will continue to support them till they fail behind and it's no longer consided cool.

in saying that sony look like they have a very nice selection of games as per usual for the ps3, but they fail behind, lets face it there 9 degree controller is catch up to the wii, there online content should of been available with the ps2 internet adaptor, and its gonna cost a f***load for the console, to me this shows sony s***ting there pants.

though i doubt it will effect overall sales in the long term scheme of things.

still very exciting e3, one of the most interesting ive ever witnessed.

Sony has locked in 17 November as the Australian launch date for the PlayStation 3, just in time for Christmas. The system will come in two bundles -- a PS3 with a 20GB hard drive (confirmed RRP of AU$829) and one with a 60GB HDD (confirmed RRP of AU$999).

price and release date shouldn't be expected. MS didn't release price and release date @ e3 last year, and neither did the DS or PSP announcements.

does it really bother you that much that you don't know what date the console is coming and the price?

they have said quarter 4, and they mean it. they aren't going to miss this window, stuff looks pretty ready. and as for the price, it has been rumoured and almost confirmed to be 200-250 (was stated as 250 in this month's EGM) for the past week.

I think its great they held smash back. The huge reveal today sent the internet into a spin of 30 page threads everywhere!

their show was still entertaining, and the tennis stuff was great. they had 3000 people at their conference, A LOT was mainstream media, not just videogame press. They want this stuff to go mainstream, so they wanted to show the fun that the wii can offer.

Tennis was great, and really shows the possibilities of how f***ing aweseom mario tennis could be :)

If you thought nintendo's show was bad, you obviously didn't see sony's. It was an outright disaster!

I was impressed with Microsoft's show too, and after playing the e3 demo of capcom's lost planet last night, and seeing the cool stuff coming, I wouldn't mind one of them down the line either :)

I saw all the conferences. I just expected more from them, maybe I was looking for too much.

Microsoft show was the best. For a console that is already out they showed alot of new stuff. Namely the connectivity that someone mentioned before - connected PC, mobile device and 360 together.

Also, Nintendo should have announced the price, because while people were going $499/$599 for the PS3 Nintendo could have said, we'll ours is only going to be $200 or $250. That would have had a big impact.

Also, Nintendo said 4th Quarter? I will bet someone $50 that wont' include Australia. Australia gets shafted by Nintendo all the time with releases, Europe does as well to a lesser extent.

Lost Planet was f***ing sweet!

I played that last night with one of my mates. At first we were like "this is s***" but then we went into the underground building area and saw some of the more interesting baddies and it blew us away. Awesome game, it's on the top of my "MUST HAVE" list now.

I think I'm going to have no money this year. I will buy a Wii at launch (maybe import from the US), I've already got a 360. I'm sure that I'll buy a PS3, but I don't know if I'll get it at launch - it depends what games are available.

The demo that Cliffy B played of Gears of War improved my interest for the game - I just hope it's more than "run into cover - shoot" because I think I'll get bored with that pretty quickly.

I want to see Pilotwings for the Wii...like really really badly. I know they showed some flying game, but apparently that wasn't Pilotwings but a sports game thingo. Zelda will own. Warioware will be fun. It's a pity Super Smash won't be out until 2007, but I know that it will be worth the wait - there are rumours going around that Sonic might be in it.

if any game is going to get me to buy a PS3 on launch at the moment, it'd definately be motorstorm.

Game bikini babes banned

MISSING: scantily-clad females hawking the latest in electronic toys for the boys.
The video game industry's annual trade show in Los Angeles opened its doors to its exhibitors yesterday with organizers ordering women staffing the booths to cover up or face a $5000 fine.

Banned are nudity, partial nudity, bikini bottoms or any sexually explicit or provocative conduct, according to the handbook from The Entertainment Software Association, or ESA, which owns and operates the E3 Expo.

yeah but sony are chronic for showing something amazing and then releasing the game and having the gfx's look nothing like it or having the texture quality and fine detail that was shown in the footage removed.

The graphics of MGS4 a very cool, but when I posted it I was more referring to the fact that it was f***ing Metal Gear Solid Four and Kojima was spearheading that s*** - I'd be just as excited if it was coming to the PS2, maybe more because I could f***ing afford the thing as soon as it came out.

I'm more looking forward to the PS3's ability to render thousands of soldiers and their corpses' physics in games like Heavenly Sword and the gameplay implications this has than anything.

I really don't care about the graphics boom, seriously. Sure it can be immersive and pretty but this is more than ruled out by developer's sacrificing gameplay to push out that extra normal map on the car's front tires and keep the minimum framerate as well the exponential rate at which it alienates indy developers, and those that simply don't have an idea "guaranteed" enough to succeed to garner the budget required to create such games. It's ultimately pushing innovation to the wayside in order to satisfy people who prefer technological prowess than creativity and, well, fun. Judging by the rather shockingly large uptake of the Xbox360, I'm guessing these people make up a large percentage of the market.

you know, hideo wants to run away from MGS4 lol.

CVG: What are your impressions of Nintendo Wii and how did Snake appear in Smash Brothers?

Kojima: I’ve played Tennis, Zelda and Mario on Wii. I find Tennis very interesting. I played the early version but the E3 version is far more advanced. As a game designer, I’m very interested in creating something for the Wii. I’d like to run away from MGS 4 creation and create something for the Wii but unfortunately, I don’t have anything that I can announce at the moment. I have lots of ideas for Wii but I have a heavy schedule with MGS 4 and Metal Gear Online. Concerning Snake’s appearance on Wii in Smash Brothers, I’m friends with the designer of the game and I thought it would be nice if you could play as Snake - when I heard about the new game last year, I contacted the designer and we started working together.

Has anyone ever told you guys you take consoles far too seriously?

All of them... The PS3, Wii and 360 will only be bettered by the next generation of consoles... so I wouldn't worry too much.

Sure, I like consoles, I think that playing games on them is cool, but I just think this whole bashing thing (OMG NINTENDO OWN MAN) is a bit lame.

Only thing that I like from the news coming out of E3 is that when PS3 and Wii come out, XBOX360 will probably lose $100-150 from its value and I'll buy one...

PS: Hashy, you're an absolute tool, take your own advice and get lost.

of course the current wave of consoles will only be bettered by the next gen ones. its the exact same with computers too though. unlike computers though, consoles seem to last a lot longer between upgrades. not to mention are usualy 1/3 the price when it comes to upgrading to a new one.

Not to mention the success of the current generation pretty much decides not only the respective companys' futures, but the future of the industry. I break out the nes and snes on regular occassions too, so it's not like consoles cease to exist once the new generation comes out.

Sorry if some of us sounded serious in a thread on the internet about a convention where people go to review stuff.

as long as the games don't rely on the VR stuff i think it'll be fine, i've seen a screenshot of the Wii controller slotted into the top of a gamecube style controller so i'd imgine when you get sick of holding the controller VR style you can switch back to the old fasion way.... it's the same with the DS, i tend not to use the stylis with a lot of games if i can possibly help it simply because i prefer to control games with the d-pad and buttons.

it was a mockup by ign for the shell controller which is the one that looks like the snes. it's used for classic games on the virtual console.

also. with the splitscreen problem..not an issue, the controls use bluetooth and there are 4 channels assigned to each control, just like the 360.

That mario video wins points for saying 'diamonds in the sky'. It loses points because it is designed for infants.

Lucky that the wii is not a kiddy console because it has a gritty cyberpunk shooter.

Please elaborate.

Are you bitter because Mario isn't touting Mark Ecko clothing, dual-wielding pistols and getting invited in for "hot coffee", or is it because he doesn't explode in a shower of gibs every time he's hit by a bullet bill? Is it because Mario isn't wearing skimpy glowing armor and snapping necks, cursing like a sailor as he darts from shadow to shadow while chatting on a comlink with war-hardened general Luigi and grinding down rails while radiohead blasts in the blackground? Would you prefer if the game was denied rating in Australia, or is merely having an M or above OFLC rating enough for you?

or is it because the demo of a training level looks pretty easy? I'd like to know.

Because you are running around a colourful fantasy land, collecting stars and trying to rescue a stupid princess in a game obviously designed for children. Where's the plot? Where's any sense of atmosphere? Those two things are very important to me in games and nintendo's games rarely have them. They just have a bunch of stupid colours and rainbows to hook the kids in like drug laced candy.

I am aware that some nintendo games have plot and atmosphere (zelda comes to mind) but even then they lay on the cutsey s*** a bit too much for my liking.

Some people would say the most important thing about a game is gameplay. If you didn't like the gameplay in Mario then fair enough, but you didn't say that you just said it was crap because it was colourful and had rainbows!

I like alot of games - and I'm more of a single player gamer so I do enjoy a storyline, but it's not necessary for a game like Mario, and that's what we're talking about here.

I actually thought you were just commenting on how easy it looked, not bashing a game for remaining true to a lisence and universe born of it in 1985 with vibrant colours and rather endeering new worlds. I don't even have to look past the "kiddiness" you're bashing it for to find something to drool over; it looks fantastic too.

Maybe one day Nintendo will die to a lack of people who share my enthusiasm, shy away from their days of old and develop for the Xbox360 crowd much like Hudson's new endeavour. Mario's overalls will be tattered and dirtied and he'll be a man who plays by his own rules in a post-apocolyptic world whos colour pallet could be found in a photo of a cave wall.

It will be a sad day.

Can you explain to me the atmosphere?

For me atmosphere is playing a shooter with headphones and hearing the sound of rain hitting body armour. To me it is stalking the streets of paris trying to avoid capture whilst breaking into a bakery and stealing a cache of drugs to sell to a shady dealer sitting in a shady bar in a shady hotel across town. Things that suck me into a game world and try and help me not constantly think "I am playing a game atm".

It isn't collecting arbitury stars to open random doors and killing a big dinosaur at the end. I loved the mario series on the nes/snes (except mario 2 that was too weird) but I never got into super mario world because I was over the tired concept. I loved mario 64 and played that to death and to be honest have never played mario sunshine, is it really different to 64 in the way 64 was different to super mario world? If not I am sick of it too.

I guess I am just a fan of realism in games, and no, that doesn't mean cs. My favourite game of all time is deus ex by a country mile if you want some sort of guage as to what sort of games I like.

The atmosphere is a happy, born again retro, anti-gravity, bosses bigger than the planets they're on kind've one. This time around I won't be ashamed of waving my wii around while collecting stars.

I agree with Dais, and it was what I was trying to say in my post before Hashy "hashifed" the thread.

If you don't appreciate the gameplay that is a Mario game then there's no point talking about atmosphere, or story because at it's very core you don't like the game. I love Mario games, so I can appreciate the art style and to me, the atmosphere.

I think hashy is of the breed of "it's a game, and it's not trying to hide it" which is fine, some people just aren't into that. But the way some games have evolved, they've turned into something else entirely, the mechanics of play aren't the sole reason to play it, you can get something more akin to an experience, something like half life 2, deus ex, thief or system shock 2, where you're sucked into a world and can feel the depth of your surroundings, you have a feel for the world you're playing in.

I'll play either, depending on what mood I'm in, if I want some fun for a little bit I'll play the former, if I want to sit down for a few hours and involve myself in something I'll play the latter.

Question about wireless controllers - if you have more than one console operating in close range of each other, how do they work? Are they all set to different frequencies? Can you program them for specific consoles? How do they work?

Well Im not sure how the new Wii controller will work but the Wavebird for the Gamecube(wirless controller)had different frequencies that you can manually change. The controller and the little thingy that pluged into the gamecube console had to be set to the same number (it ranged from 1 to 12 I think).

Edit:Fpot, different people have different tastes in games. So you don't like the new mario, that doesn't mean its for kids.

My speculations:

It is likely the Wii console will detect all controllers that are "On" within ~20 meters and assign 4 of them a frequency. Any controllers that have an assigned frequency or are particularly weaker then other controllers will be ignored in case they belong to another Wii console, like for instance your neighbors Wii console.

If two Wii consoles are in the same room, the Wii consoles will note each others presence and "pair".
If both run a lan game, all "On" controllers will be shared between the two consoles, so if there are 6 controllers, each system will control 3 each.
Each console has an IR receiver, which will likely take part in assigning a controller to a console. Want 4 controllers on one console and 2 on the other? Simply aim and "fire" the controller at the preferred TV.

Well the Xbox 360 does it without any problems, so I'm assuming the Wii won't have a problem either.

It was okay to fiddle with the channels with the wavebird because it was the first time wireless has been seen on a console. If you had to do something like that this time, I would be very pissed off.
