Just a heads up to those of you who might use less than legit copies of Windows XP, seems they upgraded their validation tool program so now it can't be disabled (which use to let you update your system). I learned of this last night when my brother updated his windows and now gets messages popping up on his system telling him his OS is invaild. Looks like he'll have to fork out for a legit copy now.
Also for those of you who arn't aware, Microsoft are allowing those people who do use pirates OS's to upgrade to legit versions much cheaper than what it would cost going down and purchasing the OS from any store. |

My brother purchased the XP Professional from them for $238 (you're directed to the site once you try to upgrade your pirated copy). They send you the CD key and link to the site to change it 2 days later, and in 2-4 weeks you receive your actual CD (if you need to reinstall). Harvey Norman are currently selling it for $479.
link Edit - Link won't work in Firefox, you'll need IE. last edited by Tanaka Khan at 15:22:42 27/Apr/06 |

gawd, asif you wouldn't have just bought it already I have a legitimate license thanks to UQ, but ended up installing a pirate copy as I got sick of ringing up Microsoft to get some Indian to re-activate my OS everytime I changed a fkn chunk of hardware. Thumbs down to product [re]activation. |

Just buy a Dell copy off Ebay for cheap (well, < $100), they work/install just like full versions.

WTF is the problem here? Most of you are in IT i take it, sign up for the Microsoft Action Pack. For $700 a year you get 10 user licenses of all the software you could want (apart from Visual Studio) i.e. Office, WinXP+64bit, Win2003+64bit, SQL 2005, SBS, MOM, blah blah and it is a "software subscription" so fits in nicely as a tax deduction (speak to your account, don't believe me).

no, XP home is for the standard gamer/home user who doesn't think they need to run a f***ing domain in their house. Bugger all other differences between XP home and pro other than some small security settings and networking things. Oh, and windows backup.
There's no real reason to run XP pro other than the fact it was the most warezed because home wasn't released with too many volume license keys, for obvious reasons. |

You can't just sign up merely for being in the I.T/Engineering industry as far as I know. Our company sold one piece of software and signed up :) |

There are still ways around the tool...
AFAIK it is possible to obtain a product key from MS that does not need to be reactivated when hardware changes occur. Not really sure how you go about this, but I have heard about it. Its generally for people like techs etc who chop and change stuff on a regular basis. Not 100% sure on this one so don't take my word for it :P |
