Topic: Quake - 10th anniversary coming !
E.T.

If I'm not mistaken, quake was released on May31, 1996. So, we are only about 4 weeks from the games 10th anniversary.

To celerbrate, I'd love to see GA put a couple of quake servers up (uless they still have them and I dont know about it) so we can have a bash, old school style.

Edit:
/cue Demon to post some of his screen shots. I know you got em old boy! :)

Hindsight is such a bitch.

I'd be up for a couple weeks/days of playing classic Quake/QuakeWorld/QuakeRally :)

Man I remember (back in '96) heading to a mate's house, downloading the Quake demo on a 33k modem, ARJ'ing them to a bunch of floppy disks and spending the trip home praying furiously that the floppy disks didn't have errors on them :(

I can remember when trog got the demo and we played map1 multiplayer, and I was soo amazed by the "backpack" that you could pick up when you killed someone. Being able to jump was pretty fkn novel too for ages.

I can also remember those comps that were held by iD to see who could finish a map the fastest. Plok won one, and got a little model quake dude, and then someone discovered this wierd thing called "rocket jumping". Fkn awesome. Those were simpler times...

Damn, I remember the first time I played Quake online, it was on a BBS with a 33.6k modem and it sucked :) but once i got a 56k modem and got a proper net connection, then it totally rocked.

I can also remember playing on UQ servers thinking that guys with 60 pings had everything. I played at about 200 and still pwned though.

when i get home from work i'll try n remember to post a screenie of the fuzzy fragfest1000 ... just before his lamo server crashed! ;D what's really funny though & brings back the memories is watching some quake demo's of online ctf play on the powerup server where everyone has over 180ms pings & are laggin' all over the shop... it looks so damn gumbified its hilarious :D

Here's a screenie for ya ET :D

My screenies are lost :((((

Boy they were a great couple of years. Didn't achieve much but man it was fun !

I only had a 9600 modem at the time of the demo release so I set an as yet unbroken land-speed record for my hatchback over to b2's place, to catch the last zmodem hash marks crawl across the screen... Then it all goes blank til about 1998 :)

yeouch.

Ausimages appears to be gone, whats a good free upload picture website, ive got a couple.

They wouldn't be big either as im pretty sure the resolution I played back then was 512 x whatever :)

My first memory of Quake was teaching myself how to use mouse aim, I'd play the first episode over & over again, bizzare way of learning yes but it was just a whole new world to look up & down without using an alternate strafe key as we all learned back in the Doom days

Holy s*** Jim, you've got some screenshots of my abysmal scores, I never thought I'd ever see any of them anyday!

Also a bunch of screenies of Jaws as well (BOS = Brotherhood of Scotch :D ) very first quake clan I was in I think haha

My effort in that pic is astounding! (I'm on -1)

my first memory of quake was right after vampire unzipped qtest and we copied it onto our machines and dragged ourselves away from doom/duke3d to have a bash

the double barrel was evil in qtest, it seemed to get watered down in quake

heh you probably just joined as the round was ending, always looks bad ;) didn't know you were fragmaster either

I remember jaws and a couple of other guys in that clan. heh that screeny is probably from an access one or netspace server

I only usually played on netspace, connect quake1.netspace.net.au connect quake2.netspace.net.au etc - I remember quake3.netspace.net.au had some special mods, like 88 rockets and you'd type impulse 101 and fire a shambler, it was great fun.

but yeah I was always fragmaster on those servers, one word (not frag_master) and usually had the colour set to red or colour 7

but absolutely f***ing awesome to see my name in some screenies, been so many years!

heh :] yeh the first time i played qtest was at work (coz there was a lan)... & i hated it!! :P we played it for like 30mins then we all decided to go back to duke3d coz it was so much easier to see each other. later we discovered the 'gamma' command :D

yeah that netspace mod server was awesome, I think it was the 'server mods' pack but they'd done a lot of their own customisations, I definitely remember that shambler :) it took 25 rocket ammos - they also had the doberman gun which was laugh.

heh demon gotta love that gamma command

lot of jim's seem to be either from before regen lans at salisbury or just as they were starting... good times
yeah I pretty much used to hit F12 after each round religiously, I've got an assload more screenies than that, those are just a couple of lots I unpacked and converted from .pcx and uploaded before I got bored

I might try and batch convert them all tonight and upload them into something a bit easier to look at them with

my first quake experience was single player one untill i stumbled apon a website called wireplay. at which point i went omg people actually play this online shortly after a couple of matches i found gamespy and learned people play lots of games online. at this point quake 2 came out and i was offically hooked to online gaming. so unlike you lot i have quake 2 to thank.

Superjumping was the s***! (throw a grenade out, then run and rocket jump off the grenade just as it explodes and go freakin' far, freakin' fast :).
I forget what map it was, but the one that had a lava pit at the bottom of a cylinder room, and it had a walkway just over the lava (but parts you could fall into), you could get outta the lava by rocket jumping in one of the corners.

Anyway you could easily superjump from down there up to the roof.

QTF was way better than TFC as well :)

US pwned you all :p

I knew you still had those screenies Demon, good man. I've got to say, I miss those days. Seeing Kuffs and Vics name on the screenie brings back lots of good memories. I dont think I ever beat Kuffs in a duel, he had mad skills. We had fun by the tonne back then. Gibs changed my life :p

Great to see the Punisher nick again, thanks Jim. You and frog seemed to duel non stop at the regen lans. I wonder if he still looks up this forum? Isnt he in the US these days?

Must try and dig up that ol quake disk and see what kind of timedemo score I get on my current system :p

Exactly what I want to know. Though judging by these screen shots I don't stand a chance. Lots of people still have a quake reference somewhere in their account (sig or avatar) which is nice since the game is nearly 10 years old.

Triamks :
If you're up for a duel or something we could just setup an open server and post the i.p here, anybody else can join in then.
I doubt we'd get enough people to require a dedicated.

I just gotta get my mouse working in Quake, doesnt seem to wanna work for some reason.

Alright, I'm ready to roll.
You'll probably have to server since I'm behind router and I doubt old Quake is gonna like that.

[edit] or first try : 60.226.40.22
Tested and I can conencted to other servers, but doubt this is gonna work with me servering.

Cool sounds good.
I'm just stuffing around rocket jumping all over the place.
I'm doubting whether you'll be able to connect due to my router though.
I'll periodically tab back here and check this thread, so if you can't connect - throw up a server with your i.p. and i'll connect to you.

It was just under multiplayer --> join game --> first server on the top of the list (4on4 or something).

The servers under that list are all laggy as hell - though still fun :)
If we want to play a decent game one of us needs to host & play.
I'll see what ports need to be forwarded and look at setting up my router.
Last time I tried port forwarding my router didn't like it for some reason though.

[edit] ok.
Give me a few mins and a server should be up.
Provided the launcher where it lets you choose which port to use works :P
I'll forward all the listed ones anyway.

I changed to static I.P. and forwarded the port I told the launcher to use.
(currently a game being hosted at that address as of 12:24am)

It should, theoretically work.

[edit] I'm tabbed away from it should still accept connections in the background.
I'll leave it going o/n.

for what it's worth i'm on a nat too, but it shouldn't matter for the clients right

No it shouldn't matter for clients, only for the host.
Maybe someone here can expplain how to get it working.

D-Link DI-524 Wireless Router.

I changed to static i.p. and forwarded the TCP/UDP ports that the launcher said the server supposedly uses..
I might try forwarding one last port that I read somewhere else that quakeworld uses [that is listed differently to the launcher].

Try to connect once more in 5 mins.
If that doesn't work I have no idea how to make it gogo.

[edit] Ok game is up, I forwarded all the ports, if it still doesn't work I give up for now and will wait on someone with more of a clue or someone who isn't behind a router can host :)

I left it on overnight but at some point (and I dont think it was long after I left the keyboard) my comp hardlocked.
I've set it up again for now, although I'm just in observer mode and I'm alt-tabbed cause I'm doing an assignment.
If you guys can connect you're welcome to use the server and i'll join in when I've finished

I.P. Should be the same.

If you still can't connect, when I'm finished here I'll install Quake onto my other box and see if I can figure out connecting etc from there.

well console has no record of anybody joining and the server has been up for over an hour so I'll assume people just can't connect still.

Farkin' hell I hate router unfriendly hosting :)
I've forwarded the entire port range that quakeworld supposedly uses but still no go eh.
