Doctors from London University have revealed details of what they believe is the largest amount of ecstasy ever consumed by a single person. Consultants from the addiction centre at St George's Medical School, London, have published a case report of a British man estimated to have taken around 40,000 pills of MDMA, the active ingredient in ecstasy, over nine years. The heaviest previous lifetime intake on record is 2,000 pills.

Though the man, who is now 37, stopped taking the drug seven years ago, he still suffers from severe physical and mental health side-effects, including extreme memory problems, paranoia, hallucinations and depression. He also suffers from painful muscle rigidity around his neck and jaw which often prevents him from opening his mouth. The doctors believe many of these symptoms may be permanent.

The man, known as Mr A in the report in the scientific journal Psychosomatics, started using ecstasy at 21. For the first two years his use was an average of five pills per weekend. Gradually this escalated until he was taking around three and a half pills a day. At the peak, the man was taking an estimated 25 pills every day for four years. After several severe collapses at parties, Mr A decided to stop taking ecstasy. For several months, he still felt he was under the influence of the drug, despite being bedridden.

(let alone nine years) How do you function at a job to get money to afford the pills :/ He must have a strong support network to keep him up as long as he has... with depression and all the other side effects he must of been close to suicide. I'm pretty sure these days he would be about as interesting to talk to as a brick wall, unless you're using him as a case study. The first year would have been pretty fun though.

its like a fluid in your brain that makes u happy, when u have exctacy pills and the like it kind of drains it. So they sell "seratonin" pills for depressed people to make more seratonin so they are happy. Then people who take drugs go and buy these pills from the shop and take them :) (im pretty sure thats how it goes down)

Obviously taking 40,000 pills would do major damage.

But drinking 40,000 drinks over that same period of time would do much worse one would think.

In fact, I would think that taking 40,000 tablets of even legal drugs would be bad. Try taking 25 anti-depressants a day and see how long you live.

i dont think drinking 40,000 over 9years would be anywhere near as bad as taking that many pills. Pills eat you from the inside out, disintegrate all your tissue/muscle/brain and heaps of other nasty physical stuff, i personally think it would be the mental and psycological (sp?) effects that would f*** the person up the most

Whereas alcohol pretty much f***s ur liver/kidneys/maybe throat/stomach and would most probaly make the person alot less smart.

scoobs that isn't what mdma does at all... go do some reading. it still hasn't been conclusively proven that MDMA is neurotoxic nor whether it permanently alters serotonin levels. Don't get me wrong, it definately ain't safe - but that "holes in the brain" stuff is down right bulls***.

yeah MDMA is very healthy stuff. in fact we should have an ecstacy pill with our meals every night, it is supposed to lower your cholestorol.

there is growing evidence that as little as 2-4 standard drinks per day can increase the risk of cancer in people who are at risk from cancer. luckily for me, my family has no history of cancer!

I remember an episode of Dr Karl on JJJ where he extremely reluctantly recommended a caller have a ciggie every now and again if their white-capped mouth ulcers were becomming too much of a problem because these were caused by lack of nicotine.

Mmmm...well, I suppose it really depends on *how* pure the ecstacy tablets were. Plus, don't forget that after time his body would have built up some sort of a tolerance to it. Still, I'm also finding it a little difficult to get my head around this case.

No wonder he felt the effects a few months down the track still! What a crazy chopper, i mean im sure you can build up a decent ammunity from built up excessive use.. But i mean wouldnt you get to a point where during the week, to actually get through the day you need 1 pill is f***in freakish! let alone 10+. f***.

Actually I don't know where they pulled such a ludicrous number from, it's not like they could have asked a guy that mentally incontinent, hmm gee how many pills were you taking a day.
