Currently testing thread subscriptions / email notification. You may get spammed if I newbed something up. Use at your own risk.

What is this subscribe link thingy?

If you subscribe to a thread, you'll get an email when someone posts to it. This was mainly put in for things like the sold forums so people could put stuff online and not have to keep checking for responses.

I _think_ it largely works but I am not 100% sure so I am really after any feedback people can offer.

Todo:

- better positioning of subscribe links/notifications
- subscribe option when replying to post
- subscribe option when making new post
- user profile options to subscribe to all posts
- all subscribed threads view
- unsubscribe from all threads button
- at the moment you get emailed even if you have already read the thread. Maybe make this an option?

Yes, it won't email you about your own posts, because you were there when you posted them

while we are on the subject of features... why not allow the thread owner to be able to lock the thread?

Subscribed the Xbox Going Strong thread. When I got a reply, I clicked the link that was supplied in the email ( http://www.ausforums.com/x/?agn=thread&id=2425247&goto=lastpost#lastpost ), and it brought me to a blank Ausforums page, as opposed to taking me to the thread.

Just a heads up man.

Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't it easier just to open up the thread itself rather than signing into your email and checking to see if you got any replies from there ?

The main reason I added this was because Eds asked me about something in the Sold forums (the WTB forums were pwned). While I was there I was thinking that it'd be handy for people posting about WTB/FS stuff if they didn't have to check the forum every day to know if someone could help them out.

So this feature is less for the QGL forum people who refresh every thread every second and more for el casual users who just want to keep tabs on certain threads.

updated so it now uses ajax-stylez instant update stuff (no more reloading page to sub/unsub to a thread)

updated so now it uses the actual domain that you're viewing (ie, you'll no longer get redirected to www.ausforums.com for a qgl.ausforums.com post so you don't have to log in there)

Just wondering, it now displays my email next to the subscribe link. Will this make it detectable by this auto email spam bot thingies or am I just being paranoid?

Well if the "auto email spam bot thingies" manage to sign up for a QGL account, subscribe to a thread and harvest their own email address .. they will indeed proceed to spam themselves.

im not sure if anyone has asked this, cbf reading all the posts.

what would happen if i set up my email as.... trog at qgl (or anyones email other than my own for the purpose of annoying that person) and then trolled every thread "subsribing to them"

how would that be policed?

Same way it gets policed anywhere I guess; if it happens the user in question can let us know and we'll unsubscribe you. I might put contact details into email mailout so people are aware of how to get in touch.

How bout an rss feed for when a thread has been responded to

RSS threads are tricky, I've thought about them before but I don't really see a good/useful way of doing it for notification purposes except to keep a running total of new threads as they're added. If you have any suggestions on how it could work for notification let me know but I dont think I've ever seen a site that offers that sort of thing, I assume because email is easier and makes a little more sense.

probably a bit late, but i think you should add a section in the automatic email that says what the person posted, because i just got one and ive forgotten what i put up

who doesn't just go to ausforums.com, login there and then be logged in on all the forums though?

yeah but i tried that and the post was nuked so now i have no way of knowing what it was short of remembering what i typed except that i tried that already and it didnt work

also i dont know why it was nuked so it was kind of pointless without jim telling me a reason for it
