I went to the Nova hosted advanced screening with much anticipation....but in my opinion, the syle in which the books are written (the whole going off on strange tangents and the excellent way things are described in the way they are in the books) doesn't really lend itself to movie adaptation.
***Vague Spoiler if you have read the book*** From what I had read on this forum the idea was the movie would be a standalone loosely based on the events in the book/s. In reality it is pretty much based on the first book with a plot modification allowing an extra section to be added to pad the length of the movie out. The ending has also been changed. It also paves the way for a movie named "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" to be made in the future... Had a lot of expectations on this movie that weren't met, but still not a bad movie. |

many of the same thoughts as elemenophee. It was just ok. had never read any of the books so it was all new to me, but enjoyed it. scored 2 free nova stickers out of it :P last edited by bzpro at 17:05:33 28/Apr/05 |

Yep, five books. #5 wasn't that great. Screwed up the old line for it: "a four part trilogy".

Mostly Harmless was a terrible way to end the series.
The 4th book (Life i think) was really cheery and Arthur even got laid. #5 seemed like Adams was sick of the series. Though he had announced a few months before his death he planned to do another book. Then the c*** died. :( R.I.P. DNA |

I liked it, thought it was excellant. Most of the first book made it in (even the poor innocent sperm whale trying to come to grips with its existence), but they added a fair bit more extra stuff. I think on the most part the extra stuff works, and stays pretty true to the spirit of the whole thing.
If anything, the only thing that bugged me was in the first half of the movie it kept cutting to scenes with the narrator and the guide explaining something far too regularly, it was making the movie feel really disjointed and kept breaking the flow. Once that eased off though, I got into it a lot more. And did anyone else notice the foreman at Arthur's house had a rather asian look to his features, kinda like he was a long lost descendant of genghis khan? Cool little touches like that rocked :) I'm sure nazi diehard fans will hate it, because it isn't an exact rendition of the book, but I quite enjoyed it and just thinking about it now, already want to see it again. |

I think my main problem is that I read the book a few days before I saw the movie-so for me I was constantly making direct comparisons as the book was still fresh in my mind.
I agree that sperm whale bit was great. I didn't notice the asian foreman....looks like I'll be off to see it again.... I also quite liked Arthur's space ship. |

The little things make it cool, like the newspaper clipping that says "Dolphins Disappear", and the reference to "Oh no, not again". I'd love to see the series continued so we can see the hate cathedral.

Well I'm a die-hard fan of the book, and I'm glad they didn't do a line-for-line adaptation. I was grateful for the fresh material (from the pen of the late DNA himself) as well as seeing the classic jokes re-told in yet another format.

Yeah, I guess by diehard fan I meant the crazy purist ones, like the LOTR fans who didn't like the movies because they weren't exact word-for-word adaptations of the books.

Allthough, the die-hard fans should know that the movie would never be the same as th books, if it was exactly the same it would be going agains the hitch hikers series. The radio series, tv series, book and now movie are all similar but differnt...
I saw it last night and thought it was great. I even brought a towl with me. Some fools laughed at us because we had towls, but it didnt matter, cause the towl protected me. My GF went with me and she has never read the books and whatnot. She said she didnt really like it cause it made no sense. I told her that was sorta the point. EDIT: O and she laughed muchly when slartibartfast uttered his name :D At first I disliked Zaphod, but he grew on me as the movie went. I thought marvin was great :D last edited by Tollaz0r! at 11:53:24 29/Apr/05 |

Hehe, I think there was a few people like that in the cinema with me when I saw it. When Ford and Arthur first land on the Heart of Gold, and marvin comes through the door and it sighs, there was a girl a few rows behind me who went "What the hell, did that door just sigh?!?!" My brother hasn't read the books though, and he really enjoyed it, so I dont think its just for people who've read the books. I think you have to have a slightly absurd sense of humour though :) |

Maybe you should form your opinion imitation after going and seeing it.
I was a bit sceptacle as to what I was going to see as I had never seen or heard anything about it until I went, but it was still damn funny in parts |

I saw it last nite with me girlfriend, she didn't like it much (or understand it) but i heard her laugh from time to time...
I enjoyed it tho, HHGTTG has always been one of my favorite book series... Did anyone else see the original Marvin robot from the old BBC TV series waiting in line to get the paperwork through to release Trillion? |
