I have had adsl for like 6 years. We were always connected to the gabba exchange, afaik the bulimba exchange wasnt around when we connected with telstra. Would we of changed automatically to the bulimba exchage since it is closer? Or is that just so crazy that you would die?

s*** yeah! pity my phone lines are the suck, there's hissing when you talk, if it rains dialup speeds drop right off and connections sometimes drop so yeah I doubt DSL would be much use. Underground phone lines so I doubt anyone is in any hurry to fix them properly.

You should lodge a fault with Telstra as this should *not* happen and is their responsibility to fix.

By the way, welcome to iiNet d0mino. Hopefully you'll be migrated to an iiSlam when they're installed in New Farm.

I'm on the iinet DSLAM at the Eight Mile Plains exchange. I'm connected at 6000 - not close enough to get the full 8000, but still damn quick!

How much is the installation/modem?
parabol

Installation is $99 or you can sign a 24-month contract and have it waived. If you break contract, the only thing you pay is the $99 setup fee that would have been waived had you stayed with them.

Plus .. don't buy a modem from iiNet, it's not worth it. Buy them cheaper from somewhere like Umart. $90-130 for a decent one. Make sure it's ADSL2/2+ compatible, unless you are absolutely sure your exchange won't get iiSlammed.

orbs, what does the iinet page tell you about your speed when u put your number in?

all it tells me is that im eligeble for broadband, would it say broadband2 if it was available to me?

wooloongabba exchange is enabled

iiBroadband2 is just the marketting term for their current set of plans (1.5-8Mbps). You can't get the old plans anymore. It doesn't mean ADSL2 or 8Mbps or anything either. Just market-speak.

Also, you sometimes can't tell if you can definitely get broadband until you apply and wait for a Telstra tech to test your line and connect you .. if there's lots of line noise or some sort of incompatible infrastructure, but I hear they have systems in place now that can detect the latter as to not waste your time waiting for connection only to find out you're rejected. Call and confirm!

If I recall correctly, all it said was that I was eligible as well. However, if your exchange has been DSLAM'ed then iinet will definitely connect you to their equipment and you'll get the full speed ADSL. How close you get to the 8000 peak speed depends on the quality of your phoneline and your distance from the exchange.

My broadband saga is pretty painful to talk about, I'm currently trying to investigate my chances of getting onto a non-telstra dSLAM, however, I also recently discovered that If you are on a RIM, or other Incompatible ADSL Infrastructure, you cannot get onto a non-telstra DSLAM, even if they have mini-mux'ed it

My exchange MGAT (Mt Gravatt) is a fair way away from me anyway, as the crow flies, about 3KM, so, I wouldn't be getting 24MBps anyway, but... and this is the confusing bit...

MGAT has a Sub-Exchange, called CDEU (Carindale???) I havent figured out where it is yet, nor if I am on it... I'm also pretty sure I'm on a RIM, and I know where it is, because about 12months ago when I first applied for ADSL, I think I got rejected because of it. However at the time, it was suposed to be being mini-muxed...

Basically, I think I might have to move before I get rid of Telstra cable, as I'm not going from 10MBIT to 1.5MBIT, and I cant get optus cable, as it doesnt run down my street.

Oh well...

Mongie i think that 1.5mbit dsl is pretty comparable to telstra/optus cable because you have twice the upload bandwidth. Of course downlads are only up to 160k/s oposed to 800-1000k/s but 160k/s download are decent considering you can get 26-30k/s uploads constantly.

I definately would not go back to a 512 k connection. 1.5's are just sooooooooo much faster whne doing regular browsing / internet usage.

12 gig aint enuff (me and decimate share a connection, we are far from warez monkies, i download music sets, pron and wierd s***, he plays bf lots and downloads a bit of music and we've hit our limit a few times)

and their 32k service is beyond s***
its practically unuseable

ok, and wooloongabba isnt on dlsam yet, but will be real soon

good enuff i guess!

^ Don't rely on that for a speed test! Some people get full speed, others (myself included) can only get 60-100KB/s max, especially in Brisbane due to some dodgy routing from the FTP server in Perth.

For a more reliable test, try a file from the Bigpond FTP:

ftp://ftp.bigpond.com/pub/games/Quake2/patches/q2-3_20-x86.exe (5MB towards quota)

You should max out your connection with only one stream. You shouldn't have to segment your downloads to get full speed. If you need to, then there is a problem with your connection.

Post speeds below!

Hey, Spook, what speed are you syncing at (in router/modem statistics)? 7.5Mbps? I can do about 7.2, maybe more if I align my cables correctly.

Though with all that speed and quota, I quickly ran out of interest in actual downloading, what a shame :/

Man you’re lucky to be syncing at 7mbit/1mbit with those attenuations!
Also if you can turn off interleaving in modems setting will see lot better latency to your first hop.

I'm pretty sure the 8mbit speeds are just ADSL1.x They are currently doing a 24mbit trial.

Note that apparently, if you're on a mini-muxed RIM, you cant go through another ISP's dslams... (apparently)

w00t got my nb5 and a central splitter from some random site for ~$160 delivered. www.mangoworld.com.au

I should probably stop trusting randoms.

I've joined the iinet pillage machine. :)

We will be dslammed before the end of July - bulimba exchange.

roomate has a Linksys RV082 10/100 8-port VPN Router, so he's f***ed with it such that the nb5 isn't routing at all, just logging in. or something. DMZ out of the modem I'm led to believe.

So because we've still got telstra cable till the end of the month, we've got both connections going into the router... just a quick change to the alternate DNS and we flawlessly switch from cable to iinet :D

And the pillage to be had, oh my the pillage.

freenews.iinet.net.au is just ridiculous for unmetered content. casually downloading, I've gone through over 7gig since wednesday. not even dslammed yet. Just insane compared to the tight arse bigpong mentality I'm used to.

cheers to the thread starter and spook, just reading this thread made me do it :)

I hope by NB5, you mean the NB5+, as the original does not support ADSL2+ (out of the box), only ADSL1/2, meaning you'll be limited to a maximum of 12Mbps instead of 24Mbps :S

I'm not sure if they've released a firmware upgrade for ADSL2+, but personally I'd stay away from modems that don't support it out of the box.

not 2+, but upgradable to 2+ according to their website....

all good.

and yea.... the freenews...

go here and get a newsgroup client.

make a server to freenews.iinet.net.au

default port - 119

make 3 connections

no need for a login as u can only get in if you're with iinet

find the groups that interest you.

great thing is freenews use doesn't count to our quota.

The reason I mentioned the NB5 doesn't support ADSL2+ out of the box but only with a firmware upgrade, is that this approach often (but not always) ends in unstable firmware, since the device wasn't designed with ADSL2+ primarily in mind.

I mean, take a look at the Netgear DG384. Some people were enjoying ADSL2/2+ without problems after applying the beta ADSL2/+ firmware, but many others ended up with an unstable connection and modem locking up.

If possible, go for a modem that supports ADSL2/2+ out of the box, that's all I'm saying :)
