Yer i know. But its not that bad.

My mate got a new HDD 120gig as per other thread.

We are having problems sharing the net. Just using crossover etc.

We had it working before basically ran the network wizard and it did it all, or manually clicking the "connection" and telling it to share etc.

Everything is setup how it was, but everytime i go to tell his network card to share the net now it gives us an error saying that it can't do it anymore.

Just wondering if you guys know why it is doing it?

- -crossover- -
And sharing dialup.

We had it all working before and now he got the new hdd its not working. (and yes everything is installed correctly)

Format, update windows, try again.

eXemplar is probably more right than he realises, sometimes ICS just collpases in on itself like that.

I spent 2 hours troubleshooting ICS with 2k as the host - I consulted countless Microsoft knowledge base entries and ended up absolutely nowhere. Eventually I gave up and set up a proxy.

Have you tried setting it up according to that annoyance.org article or are you just repetitively running the networking wizard?

Hashy, no first time i tried it i did it via the wizard (old hdd) didn't work then i manually did it.

The website you gave me just shows me exactly what i did to get it working.

After the reformats of XP went back and went to set it up manually, and when i go to tell it to share it says there is an error and it can't do it.

I believe you have to have the network cards "on" like, they both need to be plugged into something so the lights are on on the network cards and I can't remember if the dialup has to be disconnected or not, I think it might be.

Every time I've set up ICS for myself it's worked perfectly, I can even host web/ftp servers behind it. My friend's sister said theirs didn't work anymore either, I don't know wtf some people must do to their networks to break them.

What I NEVER do is use XP's built in network setup wizard. I've always done things the manual way, either static or DHCP, both ways have worked for me in the past.

Yes and like i said after the new hdd was in and we both re-formatted i

MANUALLY

set it up as per normal.

You think the dialup should be disconnected when its done?

Everything is fkn working fine and i know how to set it up im just not fkn sure WHY its telling me it won't share.

oh that post wasn't directed mainly at you, it was directed to everyone who thinks the network setup wizard solves everything. It sucks dogs balls.

Like I said, I can't remember if it has to be connected or not. I *THINK* I've always turned it on while it was disconnected. I think if I tried it while it was on it said something like "this connection is currently active, some aspects couldn't be changed and will be changed next time it's connected" or something like that

having spoken to kaygen on msn, his problem even has me stumped. He's not getting the error I thought he was getting...

as for you fubs check your ip & gateway settings.

ipconfig /all and see what the network card is on. Yours will have to be 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 and his will either be auto assigned one by your machine, or set it to 192.168.0.XXX/255.255.255.0 where XXX is any number from 2 to...well, just use 2 :) and set the gateway and dns servers on his machine to 192.168.0.1

You can use from 2-254 255 being subnet mask i think? and 256 is assigned for something... trying to remember from my CISCO studies :P

thanks dynamite, I was trying to remember whether you can use 255 in an IP adress or not, or whether it stops at 254 for the last octet (that what they're called?). Been something like close to 3-4 years since I had anything to do with networking :(

Manually setting it up is the way to go, XP's wizard has been smoking too much due to stress.

Client machine: WindowsXP recommends you don't set an IP for this, but just give it a DNS/Gateway of the server and it should work.

I must admit, XP's ICS is rather s***ty, if all else fails get a free ICS program or the like.

not that I don't agree that windows' ICS is crap, but exactly WHY is it so crap? I mean, really, what's wrong with it? You can play games behind it, icq, msn, web/ftp servers can run behind it. What exactly is so bad about windows ICS? It's always worked 100% of the time for me in the past. *shrugs* I must just be lucky I guess.

Sure it's only basic, but what do you expect for a built in internet connection sharing package. If you want advanced port forwarding and filtering use a proper NAT router or something. But for what I believe ICS was created for, it does an alright job.

*note: doesn't work for my friend, but he does whack s*** to his network, I once found his IP's as something like 198.162.1.something...I swear I left them as 192.168.0.x ... why must people play.

It's not so much what it offers that makes it bad in certain situations. It's more a less that it likes to be random. One day it'll work, another (maybe after a windows update) it decides to crap itself.

It's just random, this also goes for setting it up. What will work on one system, will fail for another and so on.

If you can't get it working, use a proxy. There are millions of *free* proxy servers available.
