We can also confirm that the game will be available on DVD only, so anyone without a DVD drive would be well advised to upgrade pretty sharpish if they want to experience what is sure to be one of the PC games of the year.

So they're all DVD editions, this one's just... special.

I would be surprised if they limited their release to DvD only. It would make their market a s*** load smaller...

Not really since most people that have the machines that will be able to run Doom3 will likely have a DVD drive. It's not like a DVD drive is a big purchase when you just spent $300+ on a graphics card.

I really doubt Activision would do anything that would reduce the possible market. I know I have a PC that will run doom 3, but don't have a DVD drive (and don't really intend to buy one any time soon).

Of course, I will buy one if I must to play Doom 3.

So people are willing to pay $99 for a game but not $44 for a DVD-ROM?

You have got to be joking.

Yeah, DVD's drives are a dime-a-dozen these days. If you can afford a kick-ass machine you can afford to buy a DVD drive. I thought it would be pretty standard these days for a PC to have a burner and a DVD.

wooohooo Proud DVD owner since 3 years ago and I'm a currently unemployed student. As if not be able to afford a DVD drive....

Ohh well I'm ready for D3 due to some selling of my PC and waiting for price drops (ohh and free stuff from a mate).

But interesting, I'd be it will come on CD aswell... look at UT2k4 and Far Cry... though 5+ cds is painful.

What, do they think distributing it on a DVD is going to help stop people pirating/distributing it or something? :D

FYI, Activision US / Activision AU haven't announced anything like this (at least, I haven't seen it, which isn't exactly definitive but announcements about Activision FPS'es usually come from the US first).

Most of the clued people seem to be saying that's the European release information.

I'm sure that to many (uninformed?)people D3 is just another game, why would they buy D3 AND a dvd drive when they could just buy pleebo's adventure in fairy cake land on CD. At least the way the marketers will think.

CD > DVD!

I tell you what, If it does come out on DVD, I so getting it, just like UT2004, I'd be dammed to install a game that requires 4 - 5 CDs compared to one DVD disc!

Yeah right. Every single PC release that iD has made except for that recent war-based crap have required the average user to spend considerable money on upgrading computers.

They do not worry about cutting out market share. They build games that force the average user to upgrade. Games targetted at next years hardware. And you know what, the average whinger posts on forums and whinges about it in the lead up, but once it's out they fork over the money and upgrade. Every time.

Since doom.

Prior to doom no one cared about Wolf 3D in the lead up to its release, but had they, they would've whinged about it not being targetted at current average hardware.

It's about time people started moving to DVD anyway. I've been hoping to see more games released in DVD editions to save on the disc changing when installing, but bugger all are available. Yet so many games need more than one CD.

I just hope they don't do the same stupid thing as UT2004 and make it a limited release so you wind up stuck buying a Cd version anyway :(

The copy available for pre-order at EB is labelled "collectors edition" and comes with a little pewter figurine thingo, so I'm assuming its the dvd version.

I pre-ordered mine a few weeks back.... Just means when the time comes (don't care when) I just pickup my copy.

Plus the extras are worth it. I read a article recently and they were doing the voice recordings for the NPC's etc... like a marine screaming "Don't f***ing leave me here you bastard" or along those lines. Sounds like they are close-ish and also sounds like a real mature game!

I heard a whisper a while ago that Tool were doing the soundtrack for the game. Also, I reckon they would have gotten something out of Nine Inch Nails if they managed to get Trent Reznor to appear in that first screener for the game ages back. Might be interesting.

I thought NIN was doing the soundtrack and thats why Trent Reznor was in that interview ages ago?

What I find unusual this time around is id's almost complete lack of hype for Doom3. I mean it's slated to be released in what, two, three months, and there really hasn't been the fever pitch of excitement which surrounded doom or quake.. You could say most of that was fanboy generated, but id certainly exploited that base and encouraged the whole hype factor. Even Todd H has been remarkably subdued about the whole thing.
