Earlier this week I was fortunate to be down at the Activate Asia 2003 conference put on by Activision in Sydney as they showcased their upcoming titles that are due over the next few months. Needless to say the highlight of the event for me was Doom 3, but I also got the chance to check out a bunch of other exciting titles such as Call of Duty, Jedi Academy, and True Crime: Streets of LA (think GTA3 but on steroids). More about these guys later.

Thanks to the good grace of Activision and the id guys there, I was able to sit down and have a brief chat to Todd Hollenshead and Tim Willits about Doom 3 and ask them some questions about the single player and harass them about multiplayer. A transcript of the interview is now up over on GameArena. Stay tuned for a look at a bunch of the other titles as well as a closer look at Doom 3 next month.

good to see some new stuff come out of that, i was expecting the same questions that every interviewer out there asks. at first peer-to-peer sounded a bit lame, but their concept sounds like it could work; it really could work well.

Yeah, i reckon if they introduced a Battle.net thingo (mainly to show rankings in game) it would be neato.

so basically from what I gather if the game does chew up a lot of bandwidth and since there isnt much traffic to the dedictated server resource (lets say gamearena doom3 server) you would be screwed as data transfer would be going between the users?

I heard they were going to implement it using peer-to-peer.

edit: just read it, and it is peer-to-peer :D Which makes a lot of sense in some situations! Now id.net can have a server that can probably host hundreds of games no worries, because all it does is help initialise the game, and provide a chat service :)

once again i bring up the point that doom3 multi will most likely be a much slower paced game than previous ID games.

well, at least if it doesnt turn out like that for most people it may as well be with the 10fps they will be getting :P
