Topic: 3gig... but no cap...??

Our first full month on optus' 3 gig plan isn't over and we've reached 3gig... but there's no sign of the speed cap as yet.

The data monitor is still showing 3000Mb used, but according to my own logging we've done over 5 meg since it reached that, yet pages are still loading with reasonable speed (much faster than the 20-28kbit cap should choke it to)

Does it take a while to kick in or something?

It happened to me yesterday, I got something like 800 megs at proper speed.. It kicked in about 15 minutes after i went over...

for me, games like bf1942 are totally unplayable.. but im a fussy bastard and I don't deal well with lag...

Cs should be reasonably playable on 28k, i mean thats what it was designed for and it doesn't need the bandwidth of the newer games

it takes a little while to kick in, and when it kicks in, you will see that it will come up with connection unplugged(if you have the network icon it in your tray)

Just give it a couple of hours.

can multiple users game with it?

There are some servers I can play Battlefield and mods without lag. Thats what I like about it, it doesn't seem to affect games to badly. However, qgl forum with 28k! eukkk!

3gb cap :(

I'm glad I got off Telstra and onto iinet

12gb a month : 6gb peak, 6gb offpeak

and when you do go over they only throttle you down to 72k

you can still play CS pretty easy on 28k.. specially since its digital not anologue.

just use rate 5000, cl_cmdrate 31, cl_updaterate 31 and adjust as necissary

This is gonna suck. I think my netstats finish in two weeks. After that I'm gonna get hooked up with ADSL on one of those unlimited plans. I don't play games, just basically surf the net and leech so not getting 600k/sec doesn't worry me.

BF1942 is still playable just fine - you just have to set your rate to the 56k one otherwise you'll get MAJOR jerkiness. I just leave it on that all the time now coz it's such a bandwidth hog otherwise.

I'm a bit pissed about being on the 3gig cap at all - we were still on the netstats system and had 2 months left of our contract when we had to move house, so I rang optus and told them we were moving. The guy told me that when you move house, they break the contract on your behalf and sign you up for a new contract at the new house at a reduced cost.

I don't mind the whole 12-month part, but the fact that they sign you up to existing plans bites - we lost our netstats so are stuck on 3 gig now and they no longer have free phone line rental if you have another of their services installed. So not only can we not download as much for the same price but our phone bill went up $20/month as well. Not too happy about that. :(

Then they f***ed us around with the install as well - I was going to explain it here but it's too long to put in the middle of the thread, so go read about it here. I was utterly stunned at their incompetency on this occasion.

you can't really play cs very well i have to use rates of 15/15/3500 and i still get choke and loss, its better than nothing but its not really as enjoyable as it could be. I got cut of the minute i hit 3 gig which sucked because I was half way downloading 2 400 gig file and both got disconnected and couldn't be resumed :/ I've been on 28.8 since the 9th this month and it has been painful...

well im at 4 gig of a 3gig cap.. :(

this is what happens when yo uhave 5 people on 1 connection and then your cuzzind decides after telling him repeatedly NOt to download anything.. so what happens, he downloads 200meg of mp3's then asks me to burn them for him. How nice. getting adsl soon.

So um, let me get this straight.

You knew you wouldnt still be on netstats, you knew that there was no special discounts or anything.
Yet you still chose optus cable internet on a new 12 month contract over the several good ADSL options.

Zuh?

The Optus "28.8k" cap is like using a 14.4 modem for surfing the net. You'll still get good pings to game servers, but constant packet loss which makes games like Quake unplayable.

I think i'm going to switch to iinet, it might be 'crappy' adsl but it'd be heaps worth it just in quota - and at least there are some places that aren't counted to it also (pipe/blah/whatever) so common big downloads don't chew up half your month. Free in-state traffic seems nice too (anyone make much use of it?).

But yeah, the optus 28.8 cap totally sucks ass - almost unusable, these forums seriously take a minute or MORE to load.

Because our initial 12 month contract wasn't up it was much cheaper to go the "move and follow" option rather than break the contract. And they sort of mentioned the 3-gig-and-new-12-month-contract part as an after-the-fact thing.

If I'd had a choice I might have considered switching to iinet or something. Actually, I probably wouldn't have switched even if I had known because we rarely went over 1.2 on our netstas for any extended period of time, so I figured we wouldn't use the 3 gig.... damn those Matrix trailers! :( Plus, 600k/sec+ download speeds rock when you finally do want to download something. :)

Oh, don't worry - we had our occasional periods where we had to watch how much we downloaded for a few days after a good weekend of leeching. :) Probably once a month we'd spend a few hours downloading crap and put our netstats into the 5 or 6 range... and that's what's going to be the killer with the 3 gig limit. On netstats if you go overboard you just have 4 or 5 days of light usage to get it back down. With this, it just takes one day (ilke on the 20th this month we used up over 600meg watchin animatrix episodes) and the rest of the month is screwed. :( Up till then we were going good at about 90meg a day.

Oh well, it's still better than the old pre-Optus days of cable - Telstra's $130/mth 550meg plan. :/

After eating yet another 30+GB this month I still got 90 pings (according to ingame, too lazy to do external tests)to 1942 servers.

Internode flat rate, best plan eva!

bwahahah.... sif I haven't got squid 0wning this 28k crap now. :)

I don't know why I didn't think of setting up a proxy server a month ago - not only does it help right now when bandwidth is preciously slim, but it should shave a bit off our regular usage and help avoid going over the 3gig next month.

Now to free up some space on that machine...
